The demo doesn't work in safari on my mac. It sometimes gets to 2, but on refresh goes back to 1. Actually, got it up to 4 one time. Seems like the claims of "Works in any browser and any server" are overstated.
birdmanjeremy··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
I'm confused. I also "still didn't know it was illegal" after reading the article. What was the crime? Were my parents guilty of this every time I road my bike around the neighborhood as a child? In the street, no less.
birdmanjeremy··on AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
does the mic still pick up literally everything though?
birdmanjeremy··on Fix it, Fork it, Fuck off (2019)
So if I find a WebKit bug in the latest iOS beta, file it with both Apple and WebKit, and get ignored, I should just fuck off? I can't fork it (Apple won't use my fork) and it's unlikely my fix would be complete and accepted for upcoming releases, so I guess you're right. "Fuck off" and let iOS devices crash is my only option.

This is purely hypothetical (e_e)

birdmanjeremy··on Who do we spend time with across our lifetime? (2020)
It would be interesting to see how Covid impacted this.
birdmanjeremy··on Ask HN: Meal Planning App?
I really like "Eat This Much". My partner and I have also been trying "Meal Prep Pro" which is a little prettier, a bit more expensive, and mobile only. The "Eat This Much" learning curve is a bit steeper, and it requires configuration, but it meets the "pantry leftovers" functionality you're looking for.

I have no association with "Eat This Much" other than being a customer and a fan.

birdmanjeremy··on ESG should be boiled down to one simple measure: emissions
I switched to Carbon Collective recently. Very happy with their approach and their transparency. A lot of ESGs are greenwashed, so it's nice putting my money somewhere I can actually feel OK about.
birdmanjeremy··on Universal influenza B vaccine induces broad, sustained protection in mice
TBF, that'd still be a win if it worked for all variants of the flu.
birdmanjeremy··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
I'm friends with quite a few nurses, primarily travel nurses, and not a single one is considering a change in career that I am aware of. Simply an anecdotal counterpoint and nothing more.
birdmanjeremy··on Venting doesn’t work
"Stop Venting" doesn't just "work" either. Processing your emotions and letting go of them does. David Hawkins' book, aptly named 'Letting Go,' covers this in detail.
birdmanjeremy··on Bezos says Amazon needs to do better for employees in last letter as CEO
His intentions are probably to not get eaten.
birdmanjeremy··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
Can it be both a small business and "non-commercial in nature"? Because that's at the crux of his fair use claim I think.
birdmanjeremy··on Why We Hate Taxes, and Why Some People Want Us To
Most people who's earnings are over $1mm a year are spending significant time & resources planning their tax strategy and are not paying 50% effective tax rates.

birdmanjeremy··on Why We Hate Taxes, and Why Some People Want Us To
I would bet you most of those people are paying a lower tax rate than I am, as they're smart enough (and have the means) to shift most of their earnings to capital gains and take advantage of other tax avoidance strategies.
birdmanjeremy··on Why We Hate Taxes, and Why Some People Want Us To
This is misleading. Top tax rates can be as high as 50.3%, but the parent comment says they are paying 51% of their earnings. These are two different things, because of tax brackets. I was both taxed a marginal rate of 48.3% and had an effective tax rate of 40.6% (CA resident).
birdmanjeremy··on Filing Your Taxes Is an Expensive Time Sink. That’s Not an Accident
This may not be entirely true. I lived in NC full time and filed taxes in CA and NY (as well as other states). Nexus is the term our accountant used.
birdmanjeremy··on To Help Tackle Inequality, Remember the Advantages You’ve Had
I just read this (again) during a bit of an existential crisis. It's certainly a good read, and puts things in perspective.
birdmanjeremy··on Finding a Therapist
I can't speak for Europeans, but in the US it greatly depends on the person. There are many who are open about seeking help, and many who would never go to a therapist.

Talking about problems and issues with someone is important. If it's not friends, or a community leader (priest/rabbi, etc), a therapist is a great option.

Do Europeans talk about their problems with their friends more openly? Perhaps this is the cause of the difference?

birdmanjeremy··on In Germany, the use of cash has become a proxy for concerns about trust, privacy
Portugal is the lowest on the list. In my experience, it's also heavily biased towards cash, at least compared to the US. Perhaps the "value in Euros" is skewed because it's cheaper in Portugal than Germany?
birdmanjeremy··on Google and Facebook accused of breaking GDPR laws
This is retargeting, and is pretty much the least sophisticated ad targeting out there.
birdmanjeremy··on Ask HN: Girlfriend is being shown ads depending on what we do together. How?
It could just be targeting. While it's possible something nefarious is going on, advertisers are really good at using available data to predict information that was never provided. In the case of the kung fu movie, it's possible IP address was used. For the open house, there could be some location correlation, but I would bet it's more than that (age, financial profile, relationship status). You can feed a bunch of data about someone to an algorithm and predict these things with pretty high confidence.

The way to avoid this is to opt out of interest based ads. iOS and Android both have options for this.

birdmanjeremy··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
I agree with the final paragraph in your comment. All I'm saying is let's reserve judgement until we know what happened.

As for a fatality proving that due care was not taken, I agree. It doesn't tell you who failed to take due care though.

birdmanjeremy··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Arizona requires drivers to "exercise due care to avoid colliding with a pedestrian". If a fatality results, but due care was taken by the driver to avoid it, then the tragic accident is just that, an accident.

Like my comment says, let's wait until we have facts before passing judgement.

birdmanjeremy··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Not obviously. Let's wait to judge until we have the facts. The pedestrian was outside of the crosswalk. There's not a whole lot of information about the events that lead up to the accident. It is possible that a pedestrian is at fault if they stepped in the way of moving traffic outside of a crosswalk. It's also possible Uber's cars are not up to the task of driving on public roadways.
birdmanjeremy··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
This is a really good, simple, reason I had not even thought of. Thanks!
birdmanjeremy··on No hugging: are we living through a crisis of touch?
;( I'm sorry
birdmanjeremy··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
UTC is a terrible choice, I don't even know what time I would wake up in UTC. My family in NC would never know what time to call. I'd be OK with PST or MST/PDT. I'd prefer more light in the evenings though, I work an early schedule and don't actually care if it's light when I go to the office.
birdmanjeremy··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
I would accept your compromise in the winter, but I'm keeping my 8:30 sunset in the summer.
birdmanjeremy··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
It appears someone beat me to it, take a look above. It's been a topic of discussion here before, and there are some very good reasons why this is not the case. Like not knowing what time someone might be awake in a different location, or not knowing what business hours might be across the world.
birdmanjeremy··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
This is such a terrible idea.
