bionoid··on Canadian government gag order in CIA brainwashing case
Yes, now let's just get it covered on mainstream media.

Oh wait.

bionoid··on Canadian government gag order in CIA brainwashing case
I suggest you look at Irvin's brain [0], which contains a lot of the connections. Red items are confirmed, documented CIA, yellow is "highly likely but not 100% confirmed".

I mean, the CIA director ordered all the documents destroyed. Clearly any effort to uncover it is going to be speculative.

Who else is making FOIA requests, interviewing people, and systematically collecting evidence? [0] Nobody.

> and for absolutely nothing of value

Nothing of value to society anyway; looking at the 1979 reunion video, it seems like they were pretty happy with the return on investment overall.

Jan Irvin at GnosticMedia has done a lot of interesting research on MKULTRA. I learned that Timothy Leary was a CIA agent and basically the counterculture of the 60s was manufactured (see "manufacturing the deadhead" [0]). Personally I find his "unspun" show refreshing, if nothing else it seems like an attempt at honest reporting, which is rare.

edit: and please do read it before judging, the evidence is more convincing than you think.

bionoid··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
> This is a remarkably direct and appropriate apology [...] many people lost a significant fraction of their support because of this change, and that won't necessarily come back

They could have restored all cancelled pledges and covered their costs for a few months. That would give creators money to pay the rent, and probably go a long way towards restoring relationship with patrons.

Clearly, they're not that sorry.

bionoid··on How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay
They knocked him down on the street, arrested him, charged him, dragged him through two years of trials. After winning the appeal, the chief of police mocked him openly and called him a liar. There was ZERO repercussions for any of the involved officers.

That's not broken?

edit: and you could look up the historical cases like Tonny Askevold. Charges of first-degree murder was dropped. The police can and will do whatever the fuck they want.

bionoid··on How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay
Norway is the same for the record. There was a local case recently where the police knocked down an innocent man on the street, handcuffed him, and charged him with assaulting a police officer. There were something like 30 eye witnesses, still he lost in court, police clearly giving false testimony. Luckily he did win the appeal.
bionoid··on Show HN: Python library for functional programming
> This [Formal provability] is bollocks.

How precisely does modularity, composability and ease of debugging improve from this module? Not at all. It may have benefits, sure. But to claim these as general attributes is just sophistry in my personal opinion.

bionoid··on Website Meta Language (2006)
Text::Template [0] was a favorite of mine, no new language to learn, just embedded Perl. Config::General [1] was another classic, super-flexible markup language for data.

Sorry I missed this response, thanks for the tip about ihiji, looks interesting!

> working out the protocols for those systems [...] It was a major royal pain.

I can only imagine; I wrote an Extron GlobalViewer client module for Crestron controllers back in the day. At least Extron was willing to share the protocol, but it was absolute junk and a nightmare to implement.

These walled systems are used everywhere in universities, government and other places where the bill lands with the taxpayer. Not only for the equipment, but also for the specialized training required to learn their broken tools.

Hopefully someone will build an innovative solution on commodity hardware like RPi...

Interesting project, bookmarked for further research! Surprised I have not come across it before, have periodically been searching for things in this space..

Are there any open source system aimed at larger installations? This space is dominated by Crestron, AMX, Extron, Control4, Savant (walled gardens). And they don't even provide a good solution for larger systems, you have to code that yourself, while walking through the toolchain/compiler minefield.

bionoid··on In Colorado, opioid deaths fall following marijuana legalization
> To the best of my knowledge, there is no reliable way to test whether a driver is actively intoxicated from pot

Police here use a spit test; supposedly it reveals use within the past 24 hours. But as far as I know, it can/will test positive for a regular user that did not smoke weed in the past 24 hours.

So I guess you are right; it is not reliable (but it'll still get you convicted..)

bionoid··on Show HN: UnderExpress – A free, ready to use website UI kit for hustlers
I am frankly baffled by the choice of "for hustlers"; my associations are "drug dealer", "scammer", "thief", "dishonest person" and so on (I'm not a native speaker, so I'm not sure how correct/common that is. Urbandictionary seems to point in the same direction[1]).

I can let that slide, but "handcrafted UI components" (as opposed to what?), and then a reference to my dreams followed by buzzwords.. I don't understand why you would use this angle for a technical audience - if you have 100+ good components, that is impressive in itself, show the code!

I completely understand that making a good website and slogans etc is very hard, so I am willing to spend some time to look at code. But you're making me jump through hoops, I'm not willing to do that even for a second. It leaves me wondering if signing up will even get me a repository/download link or is there some activation or profile bullshit? How many e-mails will I get, who do you share my address with, and so on.. If it's "absolutely free", why is it not using an established license?

bionoid··on The Depression Thing
I assumed the study is referenced in the book (and that the quote is from the book) -- but honestly I have no idea
bionoid··on The Depression Thing
> Careful with that advice. [...] Whatever you do to counter your depression, have a trustworthy, knowledgeable aid at your side: a therapist.

Quoting the UiA, "One [1988] study indicates that 70% of therapists had seen for treatment at least one patient who had had sex with a previous therapist. Of the latter, 96% were male." [1]

I guess the moral of my comment is - be careful giving advice (period)

bionoid··on A “right to repair” movement tools up
> Consumable parts are and have never been reused

Can you substantiate that? It's clearly at odds with my experience, neither of my two replacement units had a battery life that even came close to unboxed unit.

I just don't buy that every serviced device gets a new battery.

(I am in Europe by the way)

bionoid··on A “right to repair” movement tools up
> they're giving you a remanufactured iPhone using reused internal parts like screws or shielding

And, unless something changed recently, batteries. My iPhone 5 had a faulty charging socket, which got worse. A month after unboxing, it would no longer charge at all, so I handed it in for repair. Got back a unit with half the battery life and a faulty charging socket.

I gave it to a good GSoC student across the world after a second unsuccessful trip to service

bionoid··on Opioid makers made payments to one in 12 U.S. doctors
> Having a third party paying them or even just offering dinner to them so they can do their jobs is a huge conflict of interest.

Not directly related, but my sister studied to become an audiologist some 15 years ago (in Norway). I was absolutely stunned at the corporate sponsorship - full on weekend trips with a nice hotel room and paid drinks and fun activities (plus a conference). Not once, but many times during the studies, for all students, sponsored by different companies (I'm not sure if they were competing companies, but you'd think so..)

There must be a lot of money in hearing aid for that to make financial sense.. Is/was this type of sponsorship common for students in other areas, medical or elsewhere?

bionoid··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
Looking past the visual design, I think a more pressing question is what will happen to the API? From my perspective, it is Reddit's saving grace. It bridges the gap between available functionality and what moderators and users actually need. I personally run about ~30kloc of Python code against reddit 24/7, mostly to aid moderation of subreddits. This codebase has grown organically over the years, and truth be told, a major API change will require a major investment in my end. That is my own fault, for sure, but I know several other developers in the same boat.

Breaking the API will take away essential functionality from a very wide range of communities, moderators and users alike. Can they do a complete front- and back-end rewrite and still maintain a backwards-compatible API? If not, I am out, because a rewrite is simply way too much work.

edit: typo
