billh··on Oracle's Jump to Nashville Surprises Austin
> If you cross the Atlantic a lot, you don't have to spend 6 hours crossing North America first.

Unfortunately Nashville International Airport doesn't have very many non-stop transatlantic flights so the geographic proximity savings is often eaten up by time spent connecting.

Also Google and Facebook have both recently constructed large data centers just outside of Nashville.

billh··on AI-generated sad girl with piano performs the text of the MIT License
One of the things that came to mind when I was listening to the ToS song it generated was a video I had watched years ago on the very dry topic of Rule 803 - Hearsay Exceptions but it was put to a catchy tune and made it very memorable and easier to digest. I just had it make a rap song of its own ToS

billh··on Existing smartphones will connect with new satellite constellations in 2023
Trevor Paglen has a pretty amazing talk that discusses finding and photographing some of these satellites. I've linked the specific part of the talk where he starts getting into this, but the entire thing is well worth a watch.

billh··on I Write Letters to CEOs (2018)
I think the parent means that if you're not hired in the process, then you must wait a full year before entering into the candidate pipeline again.
billh··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
Sadly, in my experience this only works if there's a viable competitor in your area. Last time I asked to be transferred to the retention department, after getting nowhere with the Comcast rep, the only question they had for me was "what date should we process the disconnect for?"
billh··on Amazon’s search results are full of ads ‘unlawfully deceiving’ consumers
A few years ago I bought some brand name shampoo from Amazon and what they sent was very clearly counterfeit. The product and packaging were so bad that if anyone was paying attention to the supply line they should have been able to figure it out.

Since then my general rule has been "If it goes on me or in me, I'm not getting it from Amazon"

billh··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
IMO it would be better for NHTSA to create rulemaking that would regulate pulsing brake lights for use under heavy braking conditions similar to Europe. Effectively making it a safety feature instead of yet another annoying distraction on the road that this pulse system puts out.
billh··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
Flashing red lights are generally illegal and reserved for emergency vehicles. Pulse skirts this by claiming it's not a flashing light, but a pulsing one.

"Pulse is the only pulsing third brake light that meets regulatory requirements for use in all 50 states. Step on the brake pedal and Pulse goes to work pulsing, rather than flashing, the third brake light. What’s the difference? NHTSA regulations restrict flashing lights to emergency vehicles. Our award winning rear-end collision deterrent technology causes the third brake light to remain steady burning, even while the light pulses."

billh··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
Pulse has a "Gross Margin Analysis" spreadsheet published (probably unintentionally) on their website[1]. It shows that they're charging dealerships $59.00 for the part and it installs in about 15 minutes.

At a 500% markup, it feels less about your safety and more about the dealerships/pulseprotects income safety.

billh··on Twitter begins hiring to comply with India’s new rules
> A democratically elected government of a state is at least answerable to its constituents who can boot them out if the government doesn't do the right thing.

How can constituents come to any informed opinion if a government appointed executive is summarily striking any public discussion on controversial topics? Seems completely antithetical to any semblance of a functional democracy.

The same exact thing happens with TV shows and movies depicting american policing. If your script does not toe the line, good luck getting those permits necessary to film.

billh··on Tesla Q1 2021 Results
The point of the transition to BEV is that electricity production is fungible. It's easier to modify the mixture of generation sources and to scale into renewables a whole lot faster than trying to modify or convert the drivetrain of an ICE vehicle.

Furthermore, even if renewables do not fully power the BEV, it's easier to filter/capture pollutants at a single point source of generation than it is to try to capture these things across millions of vehicles. It's not just CO2 that's harming the environment, it's also nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, formaldehyde....

billh··on Three charged in money laundering scheme stealing $30M from foreign banks
It's not illegal to store cash in a safe deposit box, but some banks have policies which will state that you cannot. Ostensibly over money laundering / illegal asset hiding concerns.

But regardless of policy, it really does not make a whole lot of sense to keep your cash in there. If you just deposit the cash at the counter it's insured through FDIC, in the box it's not.

billh··on Neighbour manages to pollute the 2.4 ghz spectrum with his 120 IoT devices
I'm a techie type and have one of those comcast modems. I also have a descent Ubiquiti setup that rides behind it, but I'm kind of shoehorned into using their provided modem or alternatively paying for a modem myself and then paying another $35/month for "unlimited data" (Really crappy comcast policy but that's beside the point).

Long story short, this modem will reset itself and require me to not only become aware that it's once again broadcasting the "xfinitywifi" hotspot, but to also redownload the xfinity app, configure the app with my information and try to remember where they buried the setting to disable this "feature". After disabling it somehow takes up to 24 hours to actually happen....

billh··on Best to avoid using the “Have I been facebooked” website
I'm not entirely convinced the good old days of the whitepages was actually good.

The phone companies required you to purchase your privacy for a monthly fee if you didn't want to be included in their publications. Had these publications been privacy focused from the start and required opt-in instead of the extortion for privacy scheme; I have a feeling that these directories would not have existed in the form that they did, if at all.

billh··on The tragic history of the only diet pill that worked
There are treatments for cyanide poisoning. Hydroxocobalamin can be used to react cyanide and form cyanocobalamin (vitamin B-12) which is nontoxic and renally excreted. The trick is to identify the cyanide poisoning quickly enough.
billh··on Launch HN: Wyndly (YC W21) – Allergy relief through at-home oral drops
Do you have a patient transition plan in place in the unfortunate case of Wyndly dissolving or a contingency for continual treatment for the duration of the 5 years?

It seems that it would be rather difficult for a patient to transition to another providers care on their own given how few doctors are working with SLIT.

billh··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
10 years ago I did exactly this for the University of Wisconsin. My job was entirely to facilitate data extraction out of oracle databases / PeopleSoft for longitudinal studies done by faculty or other interested parties.

There were a few dozen of us spread across the UW System who's sole job it was to extract and massage data from these databases... One, very large, central database that handled data for UW and every satellite college they had.

billh··on House Republicans propose nationwide ban on municipal broadband networks
Not from the perspective of an ISP. Doing this would transform broadband from a value added service to a commodity. In a commodity market, competition is stiff and this often drives profits down to an absolute minimum. The cushy profits they are currently enjoying would evaporate in short order as soon as anyone sensed that there was money to be made by drilling fiber and racking a switch in that colo.
billh··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
A car is engineered to operated in multiple climates through the use of specific fluids designed for the operating temperatures of the climate they are used in.

Further, power plants operate on error margins significantly more narrow than your average consumer automobile. The temperatures, pressures and mechanical stresses are orders of magnitude higher.

billh··on Police playing music while being filmed, seemingly to trigger copyright filters
I think an even more simple and self limiting solution would be to require a payment for copyright that doubles every period.

For example, the first 5 years would be $100, the next 5 would be $200 ... by year 100 you're paying $52.5 million to extend your copyright by another 5 years.

You could even set up a scheme where you can pre-pay your copyright dues to a set period. Want 30 years w/o having to renew, put down $5,600 up front and it's good. Want to test the waters on something and lock in for 5? Send in $100 and let it go abandoned 5 years later if things don't pan out.
