bikamonki··on Beyond Nokia: A love story
Well, maybe they can collaborate remotely, form a descentralized corporation and make a new phone :)
bikamonki··on Let’s replace Twitter with something much better
I am not too concerned about Twitter keeping content b/c in the wall/river model of showing posts the past is irrelevant, even to the point that if a user wants to save a post for future reference/accountability a screenshot is far more effective than say scrolling down forever and find it (if it wasn't deleted). In other words: Twitter is more like a news channel not a blog.

Wanna fix Twitter? Fix trolls. It is far too obvious for the real users to spot when trolls are pushing a trend or flamming. Why can't Twitter setup some AI to mitigate troll activity? Same thing with big bucks pushing dubious campaigns a la Trump.

Two features that will make it better user experience: bookmark a tweet and add subjects/tags to tweets or accounts so users can have multiple streams well classified by subjects. Having a shampoo of content in chrono order forces scroll down to the point where one left last time.

However, all these fixes would make Twitter less profitable. So, nevermind.

bikamonki··on LinkedIn is now officially blocked in Russia
Unless I can do it sans central server, web torrent maybe? Any ideas?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: I need to roll-out a Twitter clone fast
I just read the news today about Russia's ban on Linkedin on the grounds of protecting its citizens' personal data. A similar law is about to pass in my country Ecuador which forbids personal data to be stored outside the national territory. We have presidential elections in 15 weeks and I suspect the goal of this law is to block social networks during elections (so far the only media outlets not controlled by the Revolution). Call me paranoic but on the last street protests I saw how ISPs blocked Twitter images and videos (I was logged in using my local broadband and also through RDP I logged in from a US-based VPS).

I do not aim to compete with Twitter but hopefully have a plan B ready. Obviously something descentralized would be better to avoid domain/IP blocks or DDOS (blockchain or webtorrent maybe?)

bikamonki··on LinkedIn is now officially blocked in Russia
A similar law is about to pass in my country and we are 15 weeks away from elections. I believe the targets are FB and Twitter.

So what is my best bet to rollout a Twitter clone fast and host it in-house? Impossible?

bikamonki··on Compulab Airtop – Natural Airflow Desktop
Compare to something like this that you can get for $30:

https://www.pine64.org/?product=pine-a64-board-2gb

Yes, the airtop will give you 4x-6x the features, yet in these days of cheap electronics, is $1800 really worth it?

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Which quote had the biggest impact on your life?
If you keep doing what you're doing you'll keep getting what you're getting.

As a dev, I obviously made an acronym for it: ykdykg

bikamonki··on Do you really want a single-page application framework?
> I used to wonder why it hasn't been as popular as react or angular

Mainly b/c it isn't a framework endorsed by Google/Facebook.

bikamonki··on Kill the newsletter: Convert newsletters into RSS feeds
Yes of course, RSS over a distributed channel works as well!
bikamonki··on Kill the newsletter: Convert newsletters into RSS feeds
I think we are moving towards a descentralized Internet. The RSS feed needs a central server, the newsletter can be broadcasted and then forwarded peer to peer. I'd argue the opposite then: save the newsletter, just maybe evolve it into something better (maybe with schema email??)
bikamonki··on Android: Choice at every turn
OMG so much bullshit. I get the same taste as reading political posts from the past US election: blatant lies to influence audiences.

Choice? Ok, so I disable Google Play Services (b/c among other things I want to stop all the damn tracking you do with it) and the phone breaks down. Literally useless.

Just swipe away pre-installed Google apps? Yeah right, by clicking a disabled uninstall button? Right, so you just want me to disable, not wipe'em off. Great! More choice.

Using only a tiny space to store Google apps? Again, I have seen Google Play Services hoarding 30% of my 2GB storage.

Worried about developers dealing with a fragmented ecosystem? It's called web apps (you call them Progressive Web Apps). Just give more power to the browser and developers will be super happy to use a common framework to target ALL devices.

Truly open, choiceful forks like CyanogenMod exist precisely b/c everything you've written here is bullshit.

bikamonki··on Firebase gets better analytics, crash reporting and more
Yes, it seems like a good solution. I've also rolled out my own: a simple nodejs app that listens to child added/changed events and updates a simple index which in turn can be queried through an API. For now that fits my needs.

Backbonefire does not work with Firebase 3

https://github.com/firebase/backbonefire/issues/152

bikamonki··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Polls do have a margin of error yet the wider chances that Hillary was getting just a couple of days prior are NOT an error: private media responds to private interest. I've seen it happen before: in the US and elsewhere, to influence a presidential election or to make one choose coke over pepsi; it happened on printed media, it now happens online.
bikamonki··on Firebase gets better analytics, crash reporting and more
I am a super happy Firebase user from day zero. I've built many production-ready apps with it and will continue to do so. So far the only features missing that will make it perfect and a complete back-end solution are:

1. Server code (something like parse server code or AWS lambda) to run event triggers (eg: run more complex data validation or trigger a mail/sms after a ref is created/updated)

2. Full text search. When I need full text search on my apps I have to spin-up a server (normally nodejs) and build/keep a searchable index. Then I think: if I have to run/maintain this back-end piece I might as well build an API for my app and solve the lack of back-end code as well.

3. I am still not sold on React/Vue/Angular2 so the tried and tested Backbone framework is my weapon of choice. Sadly enough, there is no official library to implement Backbone-Firebase bindings so I find myself hacking patches.

bikamonki··on 22 years in, Magic: The Gathering is the brainiest it’s ever been (2015)
You'll make more money if you take the time to sell them one by one (or 4x sets if you have them). Selling your collection in bulk will make you lose 30-40% but it's less time consuming. Ebay is the place since trading sites will pay you wholesale prices (they have to make a profit retailing your cards).

bikamonki··on Step-by-step tutorial to build a modern JavaScript stack from scratch
Are you guys familiar with the term overengineering?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What would make you pay for a digital web development magazine?
As a dev I pay for a lot of services (AWS, Digital Ocean, Github, etc). However, on my personal life the only paid service that I consume is Netflix. Everything else is free. Can you compete with free?
bikamonki··on Web Bloat Score Calculator
Seems WebBS is not accurate to measure information density of: pages with lots of images, video streaming and text rendered as images. It seems it aims to measure bloat for information delivered as text (layout, colors, etc also convey information but for simplicity let's avoid trying to measure them).

So, in essence WebBS aims to measure rendered html without tags (like using the text() function of jQuery to get contents of a div tag). In that case, why no traversing the DOM, get clean text content, measure it (count bytes) and divide by request size. In this case, WebBS will always be below 1 and a value closer to 1 is better. Also, some punishment points should be considered for number of request (or maybe define another rate since that is not bloat per-se).

bikamonki··on Comparison with Other Frameworks
True...yet I am still not convinced about the clear advantages ;)
bikamonki··on Comparison with Other Frameworks
What happened with Backbone? Did I read you will try to avoid bias? I completely understand that you'd want to benchmark against the trendiest frameworks: after all this is Javascript and what matters is what happened in the last 12 months. Yet, as a Backbone user, and after playing around with the other popular frameworks, I still do not see a compelling reason to move dozens of well running projects to a new framework. Here's my bias:

Shaving milliseconds in rendering, repaints, scripting, etc? For what? Modern devices make it almost irrelevant. If you'd be selling seconds to milliseconds I'd say ok let's have a look.

Complex dependencies vs zero dependencies. So now I need some library to bind/transpile/build many other libraries that in the end will...shave some milliseconds. You just added unnecessary complexity to solve the same problem, not to mention more KB to download.

JSX??? Don't get me started here.

Backbone core library is all I need. It packs routing, binding, event handling, rendering. Yours is useless out of the box, to be used on a real complex app it needs...more dependencies.

Fork Backbone, add a virtual dom to shave them milliseconds, and I'd argue that we've made progress.

bikamonki··on It’s official: Venezuela is a dictatorship
Last time I checked, Norway, one of the richest and happiest countries in the world, is run as a Social Democracy. Hence, Socialism is not the problem. The problem is, was, and will always be: corrupted humans running it.

In the case of Venezuela, the late Chávez and his friends stole every petro-dollar they could laid their hands on. Obviously, they also made huge public spendings, something that will naturally give a sense of prosperity and economic development, and make them very popular; yet, that public spending was not investment per-se that could later generate wealth. The Bible puts it quite clear: don't give them fish, teach them how to fish.

Now the oil money is gone so is the fake bonanza. Maduro has to stay in power in order to keep himself and his buddies out of jail.

bikamonki··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
Google fills my droid with bloatware. Even worse: all of Google apps will not work without Google Play Services which is a super abusive app: among other things, it logs ALL MY ACTIVITY 24-7. So, if Google already runs apps with such privileges, why not adding a small app that mimics Whatsapp SMS verification. After verifying that a given SIM is installed on the phone where my Google account has been authenticated, it can establish a secure tunnel to send me 2FA codes. If a hacker would clone my SIM and even have my Google password they can prevent login until I grant permission from the first install/verification. Should I lose/change my phone, Google would not allow a second verification unless a pin is entered (which I created on the first SIM verification). Another aproach that avoids the pin number would be a delay before authenticating the second install. If I get 24hrs and a notifcation that I have logged-in on a second device, I certainly have enough time to fix any possible hack.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Why don't people just stick to something universal for APIs?
Simple: existing infrastructure. Just as phasing out petrol-powered vehicles will take decades, so it takes years to move IT infra to the new standards. Add to it this complexity: new ways to solve IT problems arise all the time. Just as now it seems that REST + JSON are the best possible solution, SOAP + XML had the same status a few years back. What will happen when browsers run byte code? Or when we descentralize internet services?
bikamonki··on The Few Things I Own
Always, always, always ask yourself the following: if everyone else in the world would do what you do, would the world still work?

Yes? Ok, keep going. Maybe you have something to teach.

No? Change, you are wrong.

bikamonki··on What Is the Technology Stack and Architecture Behind MoonMail?
I see your architecture highly exposed to vendor lock-in. Also, your operations cost could become non-competive since you lack leverage to negotiate (b/c vendor lock-in). Finally, it seems hard to monitor and maintain.
