bigtones··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
This is not true in Western Australia, where Poker machines are illegal everywhere other than the one casino.
bigtones··on Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles
The car tells you verbally and shows you on the screen that it is calling back to base to ask for assistance "to get you moving again".
bigtones··on FCC unlocks spectrum to support advanced satellite services
This is the US FTC. How are they able to boldly mandate what frequencies are used in space for orbiting satellites given their jurisdiction is scoped to the domestic USA? Would that not be the ITU's jurisdiction - FTC dont set communication rules for the entire galaxy.
bigtones··on Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles
Waymo requires interventions about that often driving in San Francisco as well from my experience over many trips. Their interventions are automatic when the car calls back to home base to make a determination as to what to do next and the operator makes a choice on how to proceed. Happens about once every half an hour travelling on Waymo in SF for me.

bigtones··on It's Still Funny That 1k People Gave Tesla $250k for a Roadster Six Years Ago
If you invested that $250k in Tesla shares rather than a Tesla Roadster deposit it would be worth more than $4,000,000 now.

bigtones··on Caroline Ellison Plea Hearing Transcript (12/19/2022) [pdf]
TLDR - Calorine Ellison is pleading guilty to 4 counts:

* conspiracy to commit wire fraud on customers

* conspiracy to commit wire fraud on lenders

* conspiracy to commit securities fraud

* conspiracy to commit money laundering

She is waiving the right to appeal, must be a witness for the prosecution, and she is agreeing that the maximum sentence recommendation imposed on her is 20 years in jail and a $250k fine.

bigtones··on Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang are cooperating in the criminal case against SBF
I think Sam Trabucco of FTX is going to be like Lou Pai of Enron. If you resign at exactly the right time and put some distance between you and the fraud, you can get away with it and ride off into the sunset. https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=541142...
bigtones··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
Well Elon is planning on shutting down one of their three data centers, the Sacramento data center - so they must have a lot of extra capacity.

bigtones··on Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
I don't know that Evernote the company or it's management would be jealous - Evernote probably has more annual revenue than all of those app combined.
bigtones··on Show HN: I built my own PM tool after trying Trello, Asana, ClickUp, etc.
It is very easy to recover a previous version of the description field in Jira. Jira keeps a full change log / audit log of every change to the description field and other fields. You can definitely roll back to an old version of the description field or see what changes were made and when by whom.

bigtones··on 3D OpenStreetMap

bigtones··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
He will definitely make a lot of changes to the user experience of Twitter, and add a lot of features. He has already outlined some of the features he wants to add around billing and commerce, similar to super apps in China like Wechat. He has been thinking about this for a long time under the X banner.

bigtones··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
She did not get 10 years jail. She was sentenced to 2.5 years, with a minimum term of 15 months.
bigtones··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
Because going off IBM's design would have been illegal. It's one of the most famous and well documented reverse engineering projects ever, and they had no copies of the IBM Bios in their clean room because otherwise it would have been illegal. That's literally what clean room reverse engineering means.
bigtones··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
That type of engineering that Compaq performed was very specific clean room reverse engineering or clean room design, which is specifically designed as a defense against copyright infringement because it relies on independent creation by going off the specification (in Compaq case the Bios specification) and not the original design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_room_design
bigtones··on Stranger Things is being edited retroactively by Netflix?
Could that same criticism not also be applied to this very news article that was retroactively edited or 'George Lucased' as the writer refers to it as.
bigtones··on Shopify to lay off 10% of workers in broad shake-up
That 'fire the bottom 10% rule' was true in the 80's and 90's and was pioneered by Jack Welsh at GE, and notably Microsoft did a similar thing with their 'stack ranking' system. It's a lot less popular in management today because it breeds a divisive and political employee base that is more concerned about saving their own jobs than productively working towards the company's goals.
bigtones··on Typical implementations of payment processing and related security issues
Yeah I had just one thought after skimming it, use Stripe.
