I'm into making software engineering suck less - specifically on the infrastructure/ops side. Twenty+ year history creating open source mostly web-based software solutions in varying languages, along with ops/infra implementations to ship them.

Some things that have me especially fired up lately: Containers Local open source ML Tech support for senior citizens Automation Overlanding

bigfatfrock··on Endangered classic Mac plastic color returns as 3D-printer filament
> Makes me wonder if there will be a "thirty years discolored" version as well, if you want to print a piece to replace something broken... or can you just leave it out in the sun for a couple weeks or something?

Would probably just need to make this part of a build loop where you send it through a high intensity light/heat cycle such as when they beat up jeans for purchase by people who buy those.

"Would you prefer the color tone of the 1977 Apple II or perhaps a 1980 Apple III?"

bigfatfrock··on Migrating away from Rust
If only middle management and project managers the world over had such a positive perspective!
bigfatfrock··on An end to all this prostate trouble?
Super interesting, thank you for your candid post - keep crushing in life as it sounds like you already are, good person! Hope you are staying healthy.
bigfatfrock··on Show HN: A terminal emulator in pure PHP
Is this series of replies some kind of negative reinforcement learning LLM training at work?
bigfatfrock··on The Failure Rate of EBS
Great deep dive, I've been actively curious about some of the results you found that present themselves similarly in infra setups I run or have run previously.

This kind of miffs also:

> AWS doesn’t describe how failure is distributed for gp3 volumes

I wonder why? Because it affects their number of 9s? Rep?

bigfatfrock··on Deep Learning Is Not So Mysterious or Different
I'm a huge fan of HN just for replies such as this that smash the OP's post/product with something better. It's like at least half the reason I stick around here.

Thanks for the great read.

Had absolutely no idea Kagi was working on a browser, incredible. Thanks!

bigfatfrock··on 'Uber for nurses' exposes 86K+ medical records, PII via open S3 bucket
Sorry for the dude that built their infra and was really tired and then woke up to this, what a bummer.
bigfatfrock··on Switching from Pyenv to Uv
I converted along with most of the people in this thread.

IMO no really hard problem is ever truly solved but as can be seen in other comments, this group of people really crushed the pain of me and *many* others, so bravo alone on that - you have truly done humanity a service.

bigfatfrock··on Tell Mozilla: it's time to ditch Google
This was wild to contemplate and I was about to raise my finger and say "Really?! 'G&A' at that scale?!" but at the same time even if those kinds of roles are over-hired - they have to be responding to need and within a realm they found risk-averse.

Having said that I just have had the same kinds of questions/trouble as OP about Mozilla's wild spending and budget compared to seeing their devs at grungy linux confs in the midwest when I was an undergrad in the 00s.

You did help point out what I really wondered about also and didn't understand, so thanks.

bigfatfrock··on DigiCert: Threat of legal action to stifle Bugzilla discourse
Thank you, that was an awesome laugh this morning, that request was genius:

> Honest Achmed's uncles may invite some of their friends to issue certificates as well, in particular their cousins Refik and Abdi or "RA" as they're known. Honest Achmed's uncles assure us that their RA can be trusted, apart from that one time when they lent them the keys to the car, but that was a one-off that won't happen again.

Propel and Zero (the first options) both contain sucralose, aka Splenda - I'd prefer to just drink salt water personally, or take the hit on a tablespoon of sugar mixed in and walk it off.
bigfatfrock··on Bitwarden SDK relicensed from proprietary to GPLv3
> because KeepassXC + syncing is way too difficult for normal people

I've been debating for ages if this is a hurdle that can be overcome by packaging or even hand-holding support. When I show "normal people" my pass+sync setup they beg me to implement it for them. Once it's running it's near-zero maintenance.

bigfatfrock··on Factorio: Space Age expansion has been released
I believe he built it almost entirely solo as well, a monumental effort that brought me personally hundreds of hours of joy in a single play through.

This post (https://www.patreon.com/posts/im-factorio-now-47218319) from him previously was an interesting look into life as a mod developer while outside the development cycle of the company!

This game as a whole has brought me the most joy of most likely any game I've played since childhood, and has been especially valuable to me as a career software engineer facing resource constraints and probems that I can actually solve after a day of banging my head against a keyboard..

bigfatfrock··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
more power to you finding something you love and providing so lovingly to the community, money be damned, it's all the other things that truly matter!

my wife and I when visiting a new place specifically seek out the local bookshop and buy something, her heading into the nonfiction section and me into fantasy/scifi. always a pleasure.

bigfatfrock··on Hack GPON – how to access, change and edit fibre ONTs
I can only pray this births a ddwrt equivalent for fiber ONTs.

I’m caretaking for my parents who are on ATT fiber with their giant scary black box ONT, and am consistently paranoid of what it is attempting or is doing on their network. This would be a great way to gain more transparency in its operation and possibly open useful features.

bigfatfrock··on Tetris shows promise in reducing PTSD symptoms
That's a highly compassionate reason to get into an industry, bravo.

Is there a specific type of game you found healing, or especially one that you prefer to create for such a purpose?

I personally strangely find a mix of 'brain turn off' games such as ARPGs healing but then can also find great peace in crushing my brain through another Factorio run.

bigfatfrock··on An NFC movie library for my kids
I for one don't own a blu-ray anymore and really don't want to - they feel to me like LaserDiscs or BetaMax at this point! :)

Plus, to fathom a three-year-old-destroyer-of-property handling your blu-ray disc collection, I shudder! They are great frisbees, and coasters, and etc.

If I even still owned blu-rays I might consider ripping them and then converting to this just to avoid the above mentioned pain.

bigfatfrock··on An NFC movie library for my kids
Amazing write up and work in general putting this together - this is such an ideal form of the word "hack" in its incredibly low cost, durability, and usefulness.

I was staggered when I saw your build cost list - I know ESPs are in the realm of "Cheap AF" but all of those NFC cards also for $9?! This is one of the few reasons I would shop Alibaba! We're talking around $15 total for the full NFC setup if you can print/rig yourself a case! (yes, of course, another $X for screens, sound etc)

I have run into such a crazy amount of cool hacky kid tech in the past couple of days for some reason (this and Makey Makey), and am so lucky to have done so. I can't wait to outfit my kids with this, it is going to blow their minds.

I want to hook it up to Jellyfish because I feel Plex is total marketing trash these days but as soon as I can get time I am all over this.

bigfatfrock··on Diff-pdf: tool to visually compare two PDFs
Next level, especially with the git attribute calls, well played.

I'm still blown away how powerful imagemagick is after using it for a decade or two, what an inspiring piece of open source software.

Thanks for the historical color.

bigfatfrock··on C360 Psilocybin Lessens Treatment-Resistant Depression Symptoms
> single dose of a proprietary, synthetic formulation of psilocybin

What?! Psilocybin is being synthesized?

I had never heard of "C360", the name for the psilocybin administered, and was curious because the doses seemed low compared to standard mushroom weight, which is obvious if the psilocybin itself has been synthesized/concentrated and you aren't dealing with mass of fruiting bodies.

It's frankly a bit of a bummer to see "proprietary" attached to something that can be found in a field under cow shit, but I can only hope the results as have been seen in other incurable depression studies help others in the end.

I've never even been asked in 10+ jobs over a 20+ year career where I went to school, and mine had a great engineering program (which I had terrible grades in). They might have noticed it at the bottom of my resume but never asked.

Some of the best programmers I've had the chance to work with had no degree, though I know that's an HR bar in itself to leap over.

bigfatfrock··on The last crimes of Caravaggio
Amazing color to add to this great story, thank you.

Reading your relation, I realized that this intermixing of "questionable" (at the time) art ended up in religious settings including bible printings back then, resulting in even worse results. My first recollection is of the scandalous chapter opening characters used in some of the earliest KJV printings that results in bankruptcy/ruination of the press owner/printer due to royal/religious offense and subsequent punishment!
