bigdubs··on Proposal: expression to create pointer to simple types
It's interesting that this can be largely implemented oneself once type parameters are part of the language (as one thread commenter pointed out with `PointerOf(t T) *T`), I'm curious what other syntactical oddities become a thing of the past once we can create more expressive and typesafe functions for common kludges.

bigdubs··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
My bone to pick with this is in order to make a real dent in these problems, you have to be able to put down roots and live in a place for many years.

San Francisco and the bay area generally are just too expensive (and frankly, too dangerous) for most people to put down those roots and raise a family and get involved meaningfully in the community.

Doesn't excuse most gold-rush tech people from not being involved in local politics at all, you can get involved trivially, but in order to build real lasting coalitions and build real influence people need to stay here a long time and fight it out.

And it's just easier to throw your hands up and move to a new trendy city that doesn't have these problems.

bigdubs··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
Depends what area companies operate in, but where I work (https://blend.com) we're doubling the team again this year and are starting to hire new grads again. Data point of one obviously.
bigdubs··on Fighting Rust's Expressive Type System
You're mixing compiled versus interpreted languages here.
bigdubs··on Behavioral nudges reduce failure to appear for court
Or people that live busy lives benefit from nudges in the same way calendar notifications are a feature for almost any calendar app for otherwise perspicacious people.
bigdubs··on The Great Barrington Declaration
Wish they would leave a town of people probably completely unaware of this out of it.
bigdubs··on The Era of Visual Studio Code
The Go extension is now maintained by the Golang team: https://golang.blog/the-vs-code-go-extension-joins-the-go-pr...
bigdubs··on GM’s new series of Ultium Drive electric motors
also was keeping with a dated technology (pushrods) to keep the motor small and relatively simple (and arguably more reliable).

not sure what the analogue would be in electric motors.

bigdubs··on To be creative, Chinese philosophy teaches us to abandon ‘originality’
There was a sailing coach at Tufts that had a saying (roughly mapping to your 4 years as an undergrad)

> Imitate, Imitate, Imitate, Innovate

So not just art but also in sports

bigdubs··on Half of Americans fear a health-related bankruptcy
Related to this is the cost of care in the United States versus the outcomes is completely out of band of the rest of the world. So not only are you trying to budget for expensive healthcare, that expensive healthcare doesn't get you better outcomes on average anyway.
bigdubs··on After 48 years, Democrats endorse nuclear energy in platform
Also batteries are critical for Solar to be viable generally anyway, but not ideal for sustainability.
bigdubs··on An interesting mistake with Go's context package
Closer is an interface in go that you can test for, the issue here is interfaces are implicit in go.
bigdubs··on An interesting mistake with Go's context package
What would the goal be; for the compiler to warn if a type requires a method to be called on defer? What if you want to let the caller of the caller handle that? You would then need pragmas to silence the warning, which is something that the authors specifically don't want.
bigdubs··on An interesting mistake with Go's context package
Godoc.

This less applies to something needing to be "used" as much as something needing to have an action taken in a `defer` like `.Close()` etc.

bigdubs··on An interesting mistake with Go's context package
The issue here is contexts were introduced after the API for `http.NewRequest()` was guaranteed to be stable, so there are in effect (2) different versions of the api, one without contexts and one with.

IMHO it's a rock and a hard place; either you break compatibility, or you have a slightly more confusing API.

bigdubs··on Trump signs executive order targeting Twitter after fact-checking row
It doesn't do anything. It directs agencies he doesn't control to do things they can't do. All it does is distract and and seem intimidating to Twitter and Facebook. He's just a bully.
bigdubs··on Our restaurants are failing. Why should food delivery apps thrive?
I think they in the parent comment means customers.
bigdubs··on Generics in Go with Ian Lance Taylor (2019)
It's one of the largest open source ecosystems written in golang by lines of code, it's also a major priority for Google.
bigdubs··on Disc rot is a challenge for both archivists and collectors (2017)
The loss of what.cd wasn't difficult because it made piracy hard, it was because the users had created one of the best fully verified lossless cd audio archives on the internet.

Much of this content has popped up (or even been extended) on replacement trackers, but it's only a matter of time before the heroic operators of these trackers get forced to shut down too.

bigdubs··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating Archiver
My understanding was that the internal Borg was fine because it wasn't publicly available, versus this which is.
bigdubs··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating Archiver
Curious if this name is going to draw the ire of Paramount's copyright lawyers.
bigdubs··on The Smartphone vs. the Camera Industry
they're getting really close simulating shallow depth of field with depth sensors and computational photography, but in the same way there is no replacement resolution-wise for 8x10 and other large formats, its better just to use the real thing
bigdubs··on Simplify: move code into database functions (2015)
One danger with overuse of stored procs is unit tests; they're hard to write in sql, and also hard to keep in sync with tests in code. There are also dangers with ninja patching stored procs without corresponding code deploys.

It does make query development much easier to use a database specific IDE for writing the queries versus munging big strings in code.

bigdubs··on Fibers aren’t useful for much any more
It seems like the determination was made by how they interop with C++ libraries, not that they were inappropriate for every situation.
bigdubs··on Creating the Go Programming Language [audio]
curious how googles developer marketing got us a solid golang standard library
bigdubs··on How Firebase Interviewed Software Engineers
Do a bunch of algorithm whiteboard interviews with a super huge false negative rate.
bigdubs··on iPadOS
The iPad was never intended to be a desktop or laptop replacement; it was meant to invent a new niche for a computer with a "fileless" interface.

Expecting it to replace your development machine is probably not realistic.

bigdubs··on Wireless Carrier Throttling of Online Video Is Pervasive: Study
tcp doesn't work well for wireless because packet drops due to signal interference look like collisions
bigdubs··on Instagram influencer engagement hovers near all-time lows
My sense is at some point Instagram is going to suppress engagement unless you pay them, they may be testing out how that will play out.
