bigbaguette··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
While the far right in France has been gaining traction with full throttle populism on fertile grounds, I wouldn't overestimate their chances to make it to the presidency and discount the fierce opposition that will be expressed the day people cast their vote.

It is still a weak (but loud) political movement which lacks backbone and network.

Anthropic was founded by the guy who didn’t want to distribute GPT-2, claiming it was too dangerous to be released. The gatekeeper using the alarmist trick is at it again.
bigbaguette··on Docker releases cloud sandboxes, enabling safe agentic workloads in the cloud
With sandboxes you give your agent just what it needs and nothing more, not the whole suite of secrets living in your environment that could be exfiltrated

It's probably a matter of liquidity, storing it where it can be exchanged when needed. Transport is quite expensive

bigbaguette··on Codex starts encrypting sub-agent prompts
When you work on proprietary code with a lot of trade secrets contained in it, on a codebase that did cost millions of dollars of man-hours to build and that holds the company's IP, you tend to be very careful where you're sending that to.
bigbaguette··on Woman's hip replacement disintegrates, causing metal poisoning

bigbaguette··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
The point was never to turn it into a profitable venture, but to acquire a widely adopted and established communication channel, turn it into an echo chamber and make it run with the least cost possible. It became what was expected of it.
bigbaguette··on Ask HN: Tips for hacking a TV?
Serial ports on tv are usually for screen control, as in turn on/off, change input, set volume... Like what you can do with the OSD and the remote

bigbaguette··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
If the symptoms go away with benzos, it seems that the source of your tinnitus is some form of generalised anxiety syndrome, with all the niceties that come with it: tension headaches, teeth clenching, TMJ disorder... The burnout stresses were eased thanks to the pills, but once withdrawn came back probably harder which could have then triggered your tinnitus.

This is why benzos should never be prescribed without any other therapeutic approach alongside. They just hide the pain under the carpet for a while only to see it come back worse after and the root cause needs to be addressed with other means in the meantime.

Good luck with the road back to balance. There's no secret remedy and it's probably best to take a holistic approach for it and work on your well being from multiple fronts.

bigbaguette··on Krita: A professional free and open source painting program
Your position is extreme. And by definition one of a minority. If you've got the feeling it's growing, it's called radicalisation, which is a concern for the fate of societies since it's defeating all the efforts that have been made for getting out of some dark ages of the past.

It triggered a lot of reactions from other HNers since such a world view is denying the basic freedoms to express of the opposite gender, and even the freedom to exist.

You seem to have an education, use it to widen your perspective of the world.

> regardless of which country you live in.

I usually don't go into these kind on discussions, especially on HN, but allow me to mention that in many countries, nobody would think much of such splash screen even at work. And that doesn't mean in any way that the person in question is creepy or that anyone else around would think so for a minute. If this artwork would trigger a reaction, this wouldn't go further than "hey, nice drawing" without any afterthoughts.

Seeing this picture as suggestive is immensely conditioned by the personal and cultural background of the beholder and his community. These norms aren't universal.

bigbaguette··on Adobe at 40
-Hi Adobe, I'd like to cancel my Creative Cloud subscription

-Ohhh we're sorry to see you leave. Would you like three extra months for free so that we can maybe change your mind?

-Okay, sure

-three months later: Hi Adobe, I'd like to cancel my Creative Cloud subscription

-Dear valued customer. If you want to cancel your subscription, please pay for 9 months of service since the offer you accepted three months ago signed you up for another full year.

Go to hell, Adobe.

bigbaguette··on ‘Why am I talking to 10 guys?’ The rise and fall of dating apps
In defense of the people trying to abuse the noob boost on Hinge, gotta say that Hinge themselves make the contrast extremely stark once it expires.

Upon signing up, it was showing me mostly profiles I might be interested in opening conversations with. After a week or so, it started presenting exclusively profiles with the lowest "attractiveness" score you can imagine, or whatever they're calling it on their back end. A collection or morbidly obese people with absolutely no thought given on how they present themselves to the world.

I then deleted my account and went back out of curiosity a few months later, only to see exactly the same scenario. Same phone, same number, same pictures on my profile: I probably evaded the perceptual hashes thanks to the fact I came back long enough after the first deletion and was granted a new week of normalcy.

Bumble specifies when you delete your account that it "might" affect your experience if you do this and sign up again. At least they're a bit honest about it.

No matter what, there's a lot going on behind the curtain. People are grouped into cohorts. I've experimented with friends of the opposite gender and we were wondering why we'd never bumped into each other. No matter how narrowed down our filtering was, our profiles would never be shown to each other.

And a funny anecdote: a few months ago, Instagram started pitching ads about very high end, luxury items, probably thinking I had hit a jackpot or something. Simultaneously, I was thrown into a new cohort on dating apps. As if I was now eligible to a whole new level on the social ladder.

bigbaguette··on How Bad Europe’s Energy Crisis Is
Probably not the sole reason but a contributing factor. Humiliation -> suffering in populations -> nationalism -> war. All being natural consequences
bigbaguette··on How Bad Europe’s Energy Crisis Is
This kind of reasoning is why war never ends
bigbaguette··on How Bad Europe’s Energy Crisis Is
That was during the cold war 40 years ago and the US couldn't have said otherwise at this time given how entrenched and polarised the conflict was.

The EU has been built on the concept of collaboration. It's not for no reason that Macron called a couple weeks ago for being careful not humiliating the Russian civilisation (with of course sanctions being necessary), to fend off the risk of seeing the same thing repeating itself in a few generations. History demonstrated that many times.

bigbaguette··on We don't know how the universe began, and we will never know
It's something we learn very early in the philosophy of science, is that our vision of the world will always be inherently limited by the capabilities of our perception and the way we process it
