big_youth··on Flock CEO's Address Spread Online as Surveillance Backlash Explodes
Our founding fathers addressed this: "What country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two?

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Rolex just launched a integrated bracelet model and Royal Oaks have been popular with celebrities for decades, that style is probably here to stay.
big_youth··on China vs. Taiwan: The Geography of an Unfinished War
They didn't really become a global power until recently. Even during my youth in the 2000's it was 'China is rising', 75 years ago they were extremely poor, mostly agrarian and recovering from decades of war and revolution. 2026 China is a completely different beast.

debugging code. I had some issue so I create a plan to root cause that would run the code, change some functions or variables and run again until we get a confirmed answer.

I just work up to that very workflow this morning. I ran last night and finished at around 3am with ~200k tokens spent. Fixed the issue and created a follow up doc for things that it could not verify.

big_youth··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
I worked for Coinbase. Brian won't even speak more to this to the company. He led by twitter post. I was there for 4 years (thanks to a great manager) but Brian was one of the worst leaders I've ever experienced.
big_youth··on How do you plan to make a living after AI takes your job?
How would cyber/AI security survive in a world where AI can do software development? I'm not a LLM bull but I am a security engineer and it's already very good, I don't see how this field could possibly continue if it advances enough to destroy dev jobs.
big_youth··on Over 65? Congratulations, You Own the Economy
They are both true? Between the ultra rich and the elderly there are scraps for everyone else.

big_youth··on Tech sector is at lowest share of US employment since early 2021
Kids in the 90's would have had long fruitful careers making much more than the median american for relatively easy and stable work.
big_youth··on Comparing AI agents to cybersecurity professionals in real-world pen testing
That markets been slaughtered for a while. Pretty much every big tech company has built up strong internal security teams and automated as much as possible. Look up what happened to NCC Group post Matasano acquisitions, I joined within a year of the isec/matasano/intrepedus acquisitions and saw a slow ride down. After 5 years the rate was still $2500 a day and everyone with real talent left to internal teams for much much higher pay. NCC Group is now a scan shop operating out of the phillipines, I still have one friend that works there from the isec days! The exception being some leet places like Trail-Of-Bits.
big_youth··on Comparing AI agents to cybersecurity professionals in real-world pen testing
Yes and Yes. I was suprised walking around the DefCon CTF room lat year and half the screens were AI chats of some sort.

Context for the non-beleivers. I work on the TikTok USDS team.

big_youth··on x402 — An open protocol for internet-native payments
I'm sorry but I'm big into crypto and have never seen a contract like that deployed in the wild.

And I actually use crypto for payments more than most people. I used some just last week to buy a replica rolex from a chinese dealer because they gave a better price than credit cards.

big_youth··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
Current Oracle CEO Safra Catz lives in Palm Beach and is a frequent visitor to Mar-a-lago. She is actually a big Israel supporter, visiting and donating money often.
big_youth··on Using JWT to establish a trusted context for Row Level Security
> I thought this was common knowledge on HN?

Just as an aside but I would never say this, this is why people hate security teams. I'm a security 'expert' with 15+ years in the industry including speaking at DEFCON, Blackhat, and all that.

I had no idea about these issues and have never heard of PASETO until now! I'm actually a few months in into my startup and we are using JWT for a lot of stuff so this is very relevant. Thanks for sharing! But if I can't keep up with everything then devs who don't do this all day simply cannot.

big_youth··on How I program with LLMs
> If you spend more time proving your optimization of a cryptographic algorithm is not vulnerable to timing attacks than you do writing the code, I don't think any of my observations here are going to be useful to you.

I am not a software dev I am a security researcher. LLM's are great for my security research! It is so much easier and faster to iterate on code like fuzzers to do security testing. Writing code to do a padding oracle attack would have taken me a week+ in the past. Now I can work with an LLM to write code and learn and break within the day.

It has accelerated my security research 10 fold, just because I am able to write code and parse and interpret logs at a level above what I was able to a few years ago.

big_youth··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
>We’ve been getting far too much money, for far too long. In normal office jobs, it takes a lifetime of sacrifices to get to higher pay grade.

I don't understand this mindset. We should all support our working class brothers to get better wages. Just because the custodian, accountant, and jr HR person are also paid crap doesn't mean we should all grin and bear because at least we're not the day laborers outside.

big_youth··on Bitcoin physical bearer instrument using NFC JavaCards
The devs can change anything, it's just software. As long as miners, which are extremely centralized, agree it's the new chain.

I was a part of the bitcointalk forums in 2010 when the dev team created a soft fork that modified the blockchain to change consensus rules. THink about it, devs changed the consensus mechanism, that goes against everything bitcoin is supposed to be. They can do it again

big_youth··on Bitcoin physical bearer instrument using NFC JavaCards
Let me get this right, your argument is that miners are better than manufacturing or smelting? So that's how mining is beneficial to the energy grid. You bitcoin clowns are really on something.

Did you read a single article. Bitcoin miners ARE raising prices for Texas citizens.

Not to mention the noise issues: https://www.wsj.com/articles/bitcoin-mining-noise-drives-nei...

I gave up caring about bitcoin around 2014 after growing out of libertarian brain rot. And sold my last 5btc in 2021 after the superbowl commercial gave me the feeling the jig was up and the last suckers were in. The sooner you come to this realization the soon you can dedicate your time better uses. Good luck.

big_youth··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
Why not hire Americans? I went to a no name state school with a large CS class. Sure we're not MIT/Stanford quality (well many where) but plenty of talent to go around.

Whether they want to work for your wages is the real issues.

big_youth··on Bitcoin physical bearer instrument using NFC JavaCards
Bitcoin mining benefiting the energy grid is an absurd statement. I live in Texas and the bitcoin mines are messing up our grid by making energy more expensive during heatwaves and freezes and when shutdown we have to pay them!

big_youth··on North Korean hackers stole a record $1.7B of crypto last year
> 1. They hack computers not code. Their normal plan is to steal keys by compromising users and computers. This is in contrast to the normal "hack" that works by finding and exploiting bugs in code.

I'm just a 'regular security guy' but in that link you posted they detail that after the initial phishing compromise "The attacker managed to leverage that access to penetrate Sky Mavis IT infrastructure and gain access to the validator nodes." They don't detail the bugs that got them access to the nodes but this didn't give them control of the network so "the attacker found a backdoor through our gas-free RPC node, which they abused to get the signature for the Axie DAO validator. ...Sky Mavis requested help from the Axie DAO to distribute free transactions ... Axie DAO allowlisted Sky Mavis to sign various transactions on its behalf. This was discontinued in December 2021, but the allowlist access was not revoked."

Sounds like a pretty classic hack to me. They got into the network, got access to some important servers (how? they should be totally segregated from the corporate network). Then found a depreciated endpoint that allowed them blindly sign transactions. This is bread and butter for any pentesting work, makes me wonder if any of these web3 orgs are hiring security firms to test their systems and not just smart-contracts.

big_youth··on Extend your runway, cheap money is over
I'm no economist but my understanding is that even though we are printing money like MMT advocates, we are not implementing any of the policy decisions to combat inflation. Namely large tax increases on ultra rich.

Since we've started printing we seen a huge rise in wealth inequality and more billionaires than ever, but we don't fight the inflation with high taxes on them so assets they use (high end real estate, art, crypto, yachts) have blown up as have things they invest the extra money into (middle class housing). We should be getting ride of the extra cash floating around with higher taxes.

big_youth··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Blockchain analytics are a big sector. Companies like Coinbase and Binance have spent billions acquiring blockchain analytics firms.

Additionally, I think there is big money in selling blockchain analytics to governments for the money laundering, darknet markets, and fraud sector.

big_youth··on U.S. companies lash out at Texas law changes, including abortion ban
Yes, third generation Native with a house in urban Austin but currently near the Guadalupe Mountains out west.

I know reddit isn't representative of the state but both /r/austin and /r/texas have had this conversation many times.[0][1] I personally agree with the thesis that Texas GOP see's the demographic writing on the wall and want to limit to more liberal immigrants.

And because I already saw a comment mentioning it, I want to add that as a Mexican born and raised a border town I think the flipped Hispanic counties on the border are an anomaly. If you investigate the counties, like Zavala, that flipped, they are 1 largely blue collar men which love Trump (my roofer uncle), and 2 Zavala was actually one of the few counties that LOST population according to the 2020 census. The correlation is visible, the counties that had the highest population decline in Texas voted most heavily for Trump while the fast growing suburbs are now purple and blue. In this booming state the poor counties losing money and people are the ones voting GOP.
