bhayden··on Is it better to buy or rent?
The Portland example is dangerous territory, because now they have a home they can rent for much more per month and might kick you out. Then you just lived in a construction zone doing free labor for a year for nothing.
bhayden··on Student “safety” has become a real threat to free speech on campus
Even worse than that, sometimes people get fired for political donations. Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich was "pressured to resign" (fired) for supporting Prop 8. You don't even have to say unpopular beliefs, you just have to hold them privately until someone uncovers them through digging through your records.
bhayden··on Silicon Valley’s Dark Secret: It’s All About Age (2010)
I contacted them about this and it looks like they changed it.
bhayden··on Gawker’s Moment of Truth
It is arguably the readers driving it into the toilet. They only make those posts because they drive clicks.
bhayden··on Ask HN: Are we in the middle of yet another tech bubble?
Using "they" instead of "he or she" is a grammatical error in many instances and it's considered acceptable.
bhayden··on Ask HN: Are we in the middle of yet another tech bubble?
With everyone else defending misuse of language (LANGUAGE EVOLVES!) I am sure this is going to start becoming acceptable and correct.
bhayden··on Don't download software from SourceForge if you can help it
I would recommend not using Filezilla at all, honestly. The creator was entirely unapologetic about bundling malware.
bhayden··on Placebo Button
I typed that I would be very productive today, and I was more productive than I've been in weeks.
bhayden··on Ask HN: Can we brainstorm a better way to find a co-founder?
I would stop focusing on finding a co-founder and focus instead on starting a business. A CTO isn't the solution to wanting something developed and not having money to pay someone. Find something you can do by yourself. If you're capable you will find and hire a CTO later.
bhayden··on Pentagon Responds to FOIA with Ultimatum
Except in the cases where it actually is embarrassing, in which case it is redacted "for national security".
bhayden··on Ask HN: What is the ideal contract worker agreement?
Pricing and details aren't negotiated yet - they offered a price that was 1.75x my wage, and I'm going to counter with slightly higher than that and whatever other stipulations I decide on. 2x for base rate for client meetings might be overly complicated, since it's going to be less than 5% of my time. You make a good point about business hours though, and I will tell them I will be reasonably available during business hours.
bhayden··on Ask HN: What is the ideal contract worker agreement?
The issue I have is that I don't especially want this gig and don't need it. It's just nice to have for extra cash on the side and the work is easy so it's hard to justify turning it down. Is it really unreasonable to not want to be on call? Because if that's the case, I wouldn't really want to do it at all. I feel like 24 hour turn around on tasks seems reasonable but still being generally reachable and answering emails during business hours.
bhayden··on Ask HN: What is the ideal contract worker agreement?
Thanks for the reply. The reason I ask is because I would be solving the clients problems regardless of other stipulations. The reason for my uncertainty of what to ask for is because I've never really done freelance and I am not sure what would be considered normal.
bhayden··on In Busy Silicon Valley, Protein Powder Is in Demand
I recommend Powder Chow if you're in the US.

What is wrong the processed nature of Soylent? It's less processed than bread, and no one slams bread for being unhealthy for being highly processed.
bhayden··on Firefox tracking protection decreases page load time by 44%
Instead of condescension, please provide some sources and state your beliefs in a productive way.
bhayden··on Cash-strapped councils switch off CCTV cameras across UK
The issue isn't that people are suffering direct financial loss or bodily harm due to surveillance. The issue is that it enables authoritarian and repressive governments. You lose your privacy. Anything you do is essentially public information and can be used against you. As shitty as it is, people should have the right to do something like cheat on their spouse without some government official waving the evidence in your face for compliance. Or maybe you're into weird porn, or you read/write embarrassing things on the internet, or you're having sex with your second cousin, or you're gay but also a Christian minister. People shouldn't have to live in fear of their legal actions being used against them.
bhayden··on Why Japanese Toilets Are Failing in America (2013)
I would recommend not drinking from your bidet, after which this is a moot point. Most things in bathrooms have small amounts of fecal matter on them.

To actually answer your question, this has never been a visible issue for me in the many years I've used one.

bhayden··on The case for drinking whole milk
Some people want to drink milk but they don't want nearly twice the calories of whole over skim. It's fine in moderation, like anything else.
bhayden··on Using Magic on the Apple Watch
I believe Magic already got funding. Only took a few weeks if I remember correctly.
bhayden··on The media’s reaction to Seymour Hersh’s bin Laden scoop
They don't even give trials for American citizens abroad. Seems unlikely they'd do it for terrorist #1.
bhayden··on [dead]
I'm pretty sure if Obama wanted to take over a state with force, he'd pick one with fewer gun owners than Texas. Of all the states in the country, I would have to say Texas is probably the absolute worst one to choose for an invasion.
bhayden··on Peter Thiel on what works at work (2014)
It's not like the people doing the work are doing it for free. They're not sacrificing much. The people taking the risks are the ones sacrificing and enabling the creation of something, so they're the ones who gain from it.
bhayden··on Scientists skeptical about Theranos blood test
>I don't see them giving three letter agencies access to your account either

And you wouldn't if they were served a NSL, which is very likely to have happened.

bhayden··on In defense of Tor routers
Uninstall Flash and Java (or disable browser use) and disable your browser reporting plugins (a single option change in FF) and you're pretty anonymous. Block JavaScript for untrusted sites and you're even better. Disconnect and Adblock even better.
bhayden··on How not to interview someone who already has a job (2011)
I once had an interview for a job while I was already employed. They asked why I wanted to leave my current job, I told them I didn't and that I liked my job, but I also look for better opportunities. My interviewer seemed incredulous at this concept, and thought I was wasting her time. Does she only want to hire unemployed or unhappily employed people? So dumb.

Hi randcraw - sorry for irrelevant response, but I can't reply to older comments.

It was really helpful. Do you have any suggested reading on the topic?

>I want to travel—a lot. I want to learn new languages. I want to meet amazing people. I also want to design and build things

It's cool if someone can do this, but who can afford to, especially in their 20s?

bhayden··on Ask HN: What are the most uplifting comments you've read on HN?
I don't think this is very useful. There are a lot of opinions here and I could guarantee there's plenty of successful people who would advocate the opposite.

The real useful advice here can be summarized:

* Look in obscure places

* Productize a service

* Stick with it

Third comment, but I wanted to share this too:

It was the discussion asking founders what their lifestyle is like. I found it to be a really good glance inside their lives and it helps motivate me to continue working.
