I used to take HN seriously, but I can't anymore. After years of contributing, it's clear the site is allergic to criticism of itself. Meta commentary about moderation or culture gets recoded as "crankiness" and penalized, no matter how well-founded.

This isn't about one downvote. After 5 years I never reached the 501 karma required just to downvote, a basic function. That's a system that rewards conformity while suppressing dissent.

When I updated this bio with critique, the moderator asked if I wanted my account closed. When I pressed for an explanation, and pointed out how downvotes coincided with my emails, I got silence. That silence is its own answer.

HN isn't an open forum. It's internet feudalism: users generate the content, the lords guard the system, and feedback about that arrangement is unwelcome. That's why I'm done.

bezier-curve··on The Everything NPM Package
> There's a reason I still am skeptical of calling client-side devs "actual programmers".

Nothing in your comment actually supports this last jab at web developers. Can you elaborate? I imagine you can't because you're arrogantly posturing.

bezier-curve··on IRS to begin trial of its own free tax-filing system
I get that people don't want to underestimate someone as bad as him being president again, but at the same time, he's not even going to be on the ballot in Colorado, he's pretty much already finished as a politician.
bezier-curve··on Asking your customers what they want doesn't work
I was going to look this up, but it seems at least one of the people that maintain my pihole's lists have already blocked the domain. In any case, I like not being monitored in real time.
bezier-curve··on So I Quit Spotify
Now try putting headphones on. I can notice the difference between premium and free tier audio quality.
bezier-curve··on Labs.Google
It almost strikes me as the design equivalent of the "how do you do fellow kids?" meme. Like, it's in your face trying to engage with craft-like design but fails to make a point because google is pretentious and drinking their own Kool aid.
bezier-curve··on FCC votes to ban termination fees for cable and satellite services
This is something the FCC definitely has power to do and if you think this is overstepping then they certainly would not be able to do anything about anti-competitive behavior in your idealized version of them.
bezier-curve··on FCC votes to ban termination fees for cable and satellite services
I think as long as what is meant to be conveyed is clear and concise, it's served its purpose.
bezier-curve··on Reasonable expectation of effectiveness for large dog lifespan extension
> It's only because the people there tolerate it.

Or they're too poor to leave for greener pastures. Dictators are in power not because their people tolerate them, but because they don't have a choice in many cases. There's exceptions, but generally the stigmatized term "banana republic" aptly describes many of these places dictators control for a reason.

bezier-curve··on GitMounter: A FUSE filesystem for Git repositories
That's before git was created. Do you have details about this?
bezier-curve··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
"Business" sucks then. This is sociopathic behavior.
bezier-curve··on Nicotine (2016)
> Nicotine itself is addictive mostly because it has such a long half life, it stays in the body for multiple weeks.

It has a half-life of 2 hours [0]. If it lasted longer I think its withdrawal effect would be less steep and more gradual.

bezier-curve··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
People need food but they don't have to eat factory produced meat that requires huge amounts of CO2 footprint and antibiotics that make our own human populations less resistant to bacteria.

Biologically we are carnivores but factory farming is leaving evidence for modern society to determine whether or not it's okay and it definitely gives me pause. People care. I think maybe you're just not caring.

bezier-curve··on 'Techno-Optimism' Is Not Something You Should Believe In
I think everyone likes innovation. The problem is innovation requires creativity, which is a scarce resource in corporate environments.
bezier-curve··on Windows 11 Pro's On-by-Default Encryption Slows SSDs Up to 45%
This is not really a CPU issue, it's a disk issue. For a lot of workflows, windows already has inferior I/O performance compared to Linux even with AV disabled, so more on by default security features is not exactly helpful for developers.
bezier-curve··on Brad Smith used Microsoft's $1B lobbying machine to win Activision battle
They almost did in the early 00s, but unfortunately their lawyers were just as good then and republicans controlled the justice department.
bezier-curve··on So let’s talk about this Wayland thing
It's been a few years since I've worked with the cinnamon team, but their 2019 sentiment was basically "ignore Wayland and hope it dies".
bezier-curve··on Show HN: Android Hacker News Widget and App
Try out Harmonic, it's now open source.
bezier-curve··on Reddit faces content quality concerns after its Great Mod Purge
Maybe it doesn't need a competitor but something that supersedes its design while staying inside the community of communities structure. Most Reddit clones do nothing better than Reddit, they just attempt to painstakingly emulate it. Karma is gamed too easily. Why hasn't someone tried to rank content by a mix of votes and quality indicators (grammar checks, NLP sentiment, engagement)? Innovation usually disrupts.
bezier-curve··on Browser extensions spy on you, even if its developers don't
I maintain an open source extension with just a few thousand users and have been receiving these offers every month for years. These people will eventually find someone desperate enough for money to do it, which is unnerving and a good reason to use something like pihole, as ad blockers can't inspect traffic from other extensions.
bezier-curve··on The boy who stole Half-Life 2 (2011)
Some of it may come from them rebuilding a lot of the game after the leak, but that was arguably an unnecessary exercise to protect their IP. Even then, not close to that figure. Federal agencies are keen to protect corporations' quarterly profits, even if it ruins people's lives. Nothing new about that.
bezier-curve··on The low, low cost of committing cybercrime
I can get on board with education about social engineering hack attempts, but the amount of spyware on my work machine feels like institutionalized cyber crime. I have work that is I/O intensive, and the third party AV makes sure that's as slow as possible.
bezier-curve··on Grimes trying to censor subreddit documenting alt-right affiliations
Most of their debunking claims are hair splitting or leaving me with the impression of there being more to the story. I can easily believe a reddit mob has been stalking and harassing a musician for years. This is a sad view of a community stuck in their own toxic hate bubble, enabled by a voting system that makes them feel validated chugging their own Kool aid.
bezier-curve··on Forcing your computer to rat you out
If anything, real name identification just gives people ways to harm themselves socially in the real world. It's not going to deter antisocial behavior. Like the stereotypical crazy uncle at Thanksgiving - He's just no longer invited to Thanksgiving because they saw his extremist views in a much greater detail than otherwise.

This is why I stopped using Facebook years ago. It's bad enough that recruiters will filter me from a job opportunity over my GitHub activity grid. I know they are also researching my social media activity and most people have realized this now, and are not sincere when they feel like they are being surveilled.

bezier-curve··on Reddit removes years of chat and message archives from users' accounts
Reddit continues to show how little they care. I hope they get the IPO over with relatively soon so we can watch it turn into Tumblr, and have an exodus of people move to a service that "remembers the human".
bezier-curve··on Tell HN: Teddit has been de facto shut down
I made a user script that alternates between teddit instances on error responses. It's quick and dirty, but does the job.

bezier-curve··on Solve your big problems by solving your real problem
Exceptions don't make it good for the majority of society. Those exceptions are also what keeps people hooked, chasing a carrot until their bank account is empty.
bezier-curve··on Reddit makes it impossible to delete PII, refuses to do it itself violating GDPR [video]
I actually wrote to my representative and warned them that Reddit was playing fast and loose with social responsibility in 2022. I think more people should do this. People should write to their representatives and ask for social media regulation.
bezier-curve··on Culture eats policy
Exactly, private insurance companies with millionaire executives are the most efficient way to handle a fundamental human need for our society. /s (this means sarcasm).
bezier-curve··on Now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits
This whole situation has been a giant rugpull from under users' feet. Users shouldn't have to worry about Reddit's IPO. They signed on to a platform with expectations that there was some autonomy with administering individual forums. That they could use their third party client. This all makes sense if all you care about is money and ignore what reddit was for the past 15 years.

This isn't about just moderators. There are a lot of people that are moving on simply because of the implication of having to use Reddit's own app. It's not out of spite like you seem to be painting this as, it's because Reddit has historically made terrible software and have relied on the very same people that gives them most of their value to even make "their" content browsable.

And no, spez isn't the only person putting his name next to his arguments - the Apollo developer he defamed also was.

bezier-curve··on Study drugs make people worse at problem solving, not better
Is there a link to the study? Seems weird to question the efficacy of drugs for things they're not FDA approved for. They're not nootropics.
