Does the polyphasic sleep ever interfere with work, family or other obligations?

I've heard that's the hardest part of polyphasic. How long have you kept this up? I'm curious

bethekind··on In the gut's 'second brain,' key agents of health emerge
Article is about cells in the gut that we barely knew anything about, due to stomach acid and bile making it hard to identify their genetic material. Some researchers are making progress in this area and it's amazing.

I like that idea.

The sky is blank and blue, effectively out of focus. Fields and clouds are usually as well.

I think they help the brain be like "hmmm I'm not seeing distinct lines and edges here. Maybe I should encourage the eye to be better at looking into distances"

This is the exact opposite of what happens in front of a computer screen. The brain is likely, 'whoah this is too much contrast. Maybe I'm too good at seeing into the distance. Let's fix that by making the eyeball longer'

bethekind··on Lessons I wish I had learned before teaching differential equations [pdf] (1997)
Is there a good book for learning ML Linear Algebra? I've taken linear algebra math courses in uni and most of it went in and out one ear.

I'm looking for a book that helps me understand ML algebra, so that when I read research papers I'm not just lost and nodding my head aimlessly. Such a book may not exist, maybe it's a group of books, but if ANYONE would have pointers in this direction, I would be in your debt

TLDR; Basically too much UV light resulted in people getting skin burns and burned, red eyes

The likely cause imo? Someone bought/used UVB fluorescent tubes/lights (~200nm) instead of LED UVA (~400nm) as blacklights. They're cheaper, brighter and have a stronger effect.

Unprotected skin/eyes can feel the difference in <10 minutes (anecdotal evidence*), depending on how close they are. Being in a dark room at a party, makes it worse, as the pupils dilate and drugs/alcohol can dull the initial itchy/burning feeling from the eyes.

I don't think these were UVC, since the UV light affects DNA in a logarithmic scale. UVC is soooo much more likely to damage DNA, UVB is somewhat likely to damage DNA, UVC has a low likelihood of damaging DNA, blue light has an even lower chance of damaging DNA and so on. The time of exposure and effects were likely high nm UVB/low nm UVC. I could see this being the effects of a 280nm-315nm LED light source, or a skin treatment fluorescent tube. UVC bulbs and tubes are really hard to buy and cost a ton, so unlikely.

*I'm a nerd, wanted to solve myopia, there was a paper that suggested that UVB or UVA could help form crosslinked proteins that would prevent myopia from getting worse. It could explain why outdoor exposure helped so much. So I bought some of these UVB fluorescent bulbs and stared at them them for 10 minutes. Started feeling the itchy, burning feeling and stopped. Currently my theory of myopia has to do with regular defocusing to relax the eyes (that's what the myopia prevention glasses do)

bethekind··on Light can make water evaporate without heat
> evaporation rates are wavelength dependent, peaking at 520 nm

Basically green is apparently a great wavelength to evaporate water at. Interesting

bethekind··on Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds
An interesting tidbit. Higher Testosterone levels are associated with lighter sleeping habits. Something to be aware of.

So theoretically woman would have lower rates of dementia

bethekind··on Phind Model beats GPT-4 at coding, with GPT-3.5 speed and 16k context
Recently I've used gpt 4 and yes it does take up to a minute even for easy questions.

I've asked it how to scp a file on Windows 11 and it'll take a minute to tell me all the options possible.

If this takes 1/5th the time for equivalent questions, I'd consider switching

bethekind··on Tell HN: 0.61 USD per week for daily sprouts of grains and pulses
You mention it being unflavored, but how does it taste?

Did you choose your blend based on flavor, cost, nutrition or a blend of the three?

Have you considered automating the rinsing with a small water pump and Arduino? Or you've considered and the tradeoffs aren't worth it?

I think managers should be able to have meaningful discussions with people one, two and even three levels below them.

If they're out of touch with the layfolk or can't detect when the people reporting to them are too optimistic/pessimistic, it'll cause issues down the road.

Ol' musky boi has been known to talk to low level engineers and ignore in betweens to understand issues better

Nvidia boss has been known to take reports from people way lower in the chain.

Both have been known to do a decent job in directing these large orgs directions faster than most.

I would have liked to see more detailed benchmarking, such as the electricity, exchange and weather benchmarks.

bethekind··on US DOE Selects Pacific Northwest for Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub
Until SMR (small modular reactors) are available at Fly-in, fly-out camps and mine sites, they will use diesel or hydrogen. That will take at least a decade.

Alberta is going heavy into blue hydrogen. For them it's a win-win. They transition profit to natural gas (better than tar oil sands) and hydrogen is cheaper to produce, providing a base level of supply for heavy vehicles and the like.

bethekind··on Goldman Insider Trader Did His Best
For the TLDR:

Insider was a investment bank analyst dealing with mergers and acquisitions.

The insider was smart, used Signal to communicate, never bought a single companys stock and used a childhood friend to buy and sell for him.

It all went south when law enforcement got in contact with the friend, his friend lost his nerve and turned on the insider, recording their messages and conversations.

Sounds like he didn't vet/prep his friend enough.

Iron lungs use negative pressure so they don't suffer from this
