I think Substack is clearly and obviously fairer than most competitors to both writers and readers. That’s why it’s succeeding.
> "No creepy typing predictions" - Fastmail just advertises a missing feature as an advantage
To the privacy conscious, that’s a feature. I and other users pay them enough not to have to harvest, collect, train ml models on, or use our data or metadata in any way, for predications or other pseudo-features.
Slack and Spotify design teams really need to appreciate the purse: if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Not related to the service itself, but I strongly dislike those random (seemingly personal but are actually not) automated emails that start coming in 15 minutes after signing up. This is spam. Please don't spam.
I understand the whole issue with nvidia and their asinine drivers, so no need to come down on me. Hopefully things change in the future with Nvidia cards, I absolutely love the experience Sway provides on integrated intel gpus.
I think it’s more accurate to say: Crypto is a solution for anyone who needs to receive or send money “privately” (rather than) “anonymously”. The idea that you don’t need documents or to provide additional self identifying information (like name and address) doesn’t necessarily mean anonymity, or (imo) should anonymity be a top priority even (not that that’s not important), but being able to spend and transfer money to places where tradition banking doesn’t operate or without being charged extra is.
Whatever mess a system’s/government’s economical plan might lead to, people’s money won’t be tied to it and wouldn’t be affected.
Also, you don’t really need a smart phone, any old laptop that can run Linux would do.(which are usually cheaper, more available and function better than a phone)
Anything that completely blocks Play services is a win in my book.
Sweden is pretty much a willingly fully cashless society and you can still function normally without banking mobile apps, or with a stay-at-home-usually-off phone that you can use for bank app when needed, though at that point you can just use the website.
Now I think my next mobile OS is going to be GrapheneOS.
Like others have mentioned, this is as big of a warning as anyone's going to get to get out of that locked-in ecosystem. On that note, the outrage is kind of useless if you don't skip buying the next iPhone. You should fully own what you fully pay for.
It's like expecting that an AI trained on Shakespeare novels would be able to "help" a writer write Shakespeare-like novels. Sure, they might get something that might fool some people, but are they a writer? I think software is a lot more like "writing" than it is like "building".
What mostly annoys me is that this is a win-win for github regardless of the outcome. If people buy into it (even for just a while, and it currently seems like some really smart people are buying into it) they'll carve a huge piece of a new market. If it fails, they'll make it seem like an experiment into the whole ethical gray area of what should and shouldn't be used for training, and that they just wanted to draw attention to it.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. There's more people using internet now in general. Saying "it's absolutely irrelevant except to a small niche of users" is an egregious statement.
If you like RSS, don't rely on Google. They'll probably kill it again [0] after this experiment runs its course, or wait until more people adopt it by default and then try to break yet another open standard.
If you'd like a recommendation, Feedbin is fantastic.
It's your job to fix your site so it doesn't break because of ad-block. If you're determined on refusing service for people who don't want to be tracked by breaking checkout, that's fine as well. But then you don't get to complain.
Side note: my pet peeve these days is emojis. People need to stop it with shoving emojis everywhere, just like TeeSpring needs to stop shoving evil analytics everywhere. Not everything needs to have 4x emotional emphasis ffs.
