bentaber··on The Company Man
Im enjoying reading this but struggling with the fact that the average number of words per sentence nears 150. I exaggerate, of course. But please, use periods.

From the About

"Isochrones are manually calculated using turf.js assuming 1.2m/s walking speed after the subway trip. These are simple buffers around each station/prior isochrone and do not take the street network into account."

bentaber··on One does not simply 'pip install'
Is there a canonical example of how python projects should manage dependencies and sandboxing such that other developers can just clone, install, and get to work?
bentaber··on Why adults still dream about school
Not everything is great. But you do get to hang out with friends all day.
bentaber··on Cloudflare R2 storage: Rapid and reliable object storage, minus the egress fees
So the naming strategy is to call it R2, because it comes before S3? I like it
bentaber··on VW Will Sell You Self-Driving for $8.50/Hour Someday. Too High or Too Low?
FWIW, Harlem is a neighborhood in Manhattan, and depending on where you start from elsewhere in Manhattan it's ~5-20 minutes.
bentaber··on Vercel Serverless Functions vs. Cloudflare Workers
One use case is validating auth tokens at the edge so you can edge cache API responses that require auth.

bentaber··on Parachuting Beavers into Idaho's Wilderness? Yes, It Really Happened (2015)
There's a nicely illustrated children's book written about this called The Skydiving Beavers: https://sleepingbearpress.com/shop/show/11751

bentaber··on Please take care of my plant
Not a very good idea? Even if it's not the simplest scientific solution for the success of the plant, it's still a fantastic idea.

The beauty, and intrigue, of this solution is the community that is formed, enabled by the use of technology, to solve a problem together collectively.

bentaber··on Maybe: run a command, see what it does to your files without actually doing it
Wouldn't the rsync --dry-run flag be helpful in that scenario?

bentaber··on Goodbye Heroku
It's all about reducing the risk. Accidents happen no matter how well you've engineered your maintenance and deployment practices.

Do everything you can to reduce the risk, including building a resilient system, AND not taking a major swath of it offline during a high traffic period.

bentaber··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to look for "younger" developers. Might want to rethink that one.

Of course if there is no monetary compensation, maybe it doesn't matter.

Solid use of animated gifs to get the point across.
bentaber··on Ask HN: Your favorite to-do list or task manager?
Asana is my favorite. It can be used for basic to-do lists or more complex project plans. The interface feels fast and nicely designed, with key bindings for everything so you can move through it very quickly. Free for up to 30 people in a team, so you can assign tasks to others if you want to.
