bennyhill··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
Seems pretty scary to me that the supposed error causing uncontrolled acceleration is a little soap near interior matts. I guess I've been called a pig for not being extremely reckless with the cars I've owned.
bennyhill··on OpenJS: "XZ Utils Cyberattack Likely Not an Isolated Incident"
Please no..

You can find some computation to optimize just like you can find memory to compact, so getting caught was largely not believing performance was going to be part of the test..

But if you aren't in it for ulterior motives, you have predictive branching, etc, so your performance loss may be in the imagination of a CPU designer with a wrong idea of typical that strangely coincides with a uniquely written benchmark..

bennyhill··on Dubai's Floods Weren't Caused by Cloud Seeding
Except not really.. It couldn't have had much affect seeding the areas affected, they were not just a little flooded and another human intervention that places contaminants in the air actually causes unpredictable weather..
bennyhill··on Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince buys local paper, feuds over mansion build
I would never want to be one of the CEOs because of this gap in options between having the money and skills to manipulate Bavaria in to selling you the real Neuschwanstein and then moving it brick by brick and living in a converted olive garden.
bennyhill··on How Nestlé gets children hooked on sugar in lower-income countries
Juice is not really healthy, it may not be a dangerous part of a particularly active lifestyle but for most lifestyles it probably is dangerous, especially considering that it is probably replacing whole fruit.
bennyhill··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
No one wants to talk about all the downsides of trips that include leaving the house.. It's almost like a sizable portion of GDP has been taken over by an industry of vultures that need to fight any cleaner, safer more environmental alternative that might be successful by word of mouth alone.
bennyhill··on Tax consequences of WIN95 team members keeping a piece of software for testing
Employees leave and they presumably didn't ask for anything not in inventory and couldn't ask afterwards with any consequences..

I would view it similar to letting people pick through your ewaste trash. It might have value but the company has written it off.

bennyhill··on Tesla postpones $25k electric car
I can't really imagine anywhere but North America repelling consumer demand for cheap EVs. Most countries importing what people want to buy seems like a circle of relative volume, cost and quality improvement destroying Teslas relevance.
bennyhill··on $10M in Gold Disguised as Machine Parts Seized from Cargo Plane
Right, the stores would actually pay a little less than market value+tax on any "presumed used" gold.

Charging taxes on a consumer resale is hard and unpopular as it is double taxation, the only example I can think of is weird places with house sale stamp taxes and such.

bennyhill··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
People take prescribed drugs for less than a 25% chance that it helps and a Russian roulette of side effects. Does sexual dysfunction improve depression?
bennyhill··on Man creatively sneaks onto Delta flight, but gets caught
He had a standby ticket that couldn't be used on this flight, but expected to find an empty seat when it was in the air?
bennyhill··on X won't let users hide their blue checks anymore
You are the normal user but not a normal person, Mr. Musk.
bennyhill··on The Costs of Homeownership Are Skyrocketing
Its also not buyer and future occupants that determine (new) house sizes. Local government in many places uses zoning to make sure new dwelings bring more tax income than school age children costs.
bennyhill··on Apple alerts users in 92 nations to mercenary spyware attacks
Colleges are basically outsourced green field R&D setup through professors as well as Patent departments to monetize their internal/grant research spend.. Sampling in a large company what you would happen upon is mundane additions to complex solutions you would be unlikely to want to copy if you weren't along for the earlier parts of the ride.
bennyhill··on Apple alerts users in 92 nations to mercenary spyware attacks
A government that stoops to civil rights crimes but doesn't attach a good percentage of its fear to student movements is kind of oblivious to history as it pertains to its own miserable survival.
bennyhill··on Biden Says U.S. Is Considering Dropping Its Case Against Assange
It's hopefully an opportunity to embarrass him if he backs out.

Personally, I see it as a larger problem for the US that the Democrats are no longer anywhere near left enough or dialog oriented enough to maintain the facade of a superpower with European values and special relationships, and I don't think a fake moment of reflection will change that.

Europe would be moving toward seeing itself as bullied by 3 superpowers with less distinction either way but at an accelerated pace if it doesn't even see the Democrats as a relatable government in exile when the US is particularly unhinged.

bennyhill··on The Git repositories of XZ projects are available on GitHub again
Wanting to do something right is permission to do so in a world of standards but not in a world of free reference implementation in lieu of a standard.
bennyhill··on Is It Dry Yet?
Drying in freezing temperatures actually works just fine, wet environments are really a problem though.
bennyhill··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
If I had 3 years to implement a safety feature based on a patent to meet new legal requirements I would be concerned about getting sued for edge cases the patent holder worked out.. Injurues are reduced but buyer beware may no longer apply to the remaining injuries especially if even other new implementations avoid edge case largely by accident, I.e. slightly different materials and other factors not considered when only one manufacturer was attempting the feature.
bennyhill··on UK govt office admits ability to negotiate billions curbed by vendor lock-in
The hyperscale clouds double in cost every 3 years compared to the prices dictated by Moore's law for hardware sold or rented in competitive markets.
bennyhill··on Paying for Cloud Storage is Stupid [video]
A personal account? I think any bank account has to be closed out in the process of processing an estate.
bennyhill··on Xz: A microcosm of the interactions in open source projects
This is certainly a good idea for the individual who is running a FOSS project.. But I think the projects with maintainers who bend over backwards for people are more often the ones that end up chosen and kept as dependencies when there are for example hundreds of compression libraries to choose from.

The distribution game is kind of stacked for the most likely to burn out to be the most likely to be important in the stack and in desperate need of help.

bennyhill··on Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise
> so now security-critical daemons like openssh have additional dependencies like liblzma

Systemd itself seems security-critical to me. Would removing other dependencies on libsystemd really make a secure system where systemd was compromised through its library?

bennyhill··on Germany drafts law that will make E2EE mandatory for messengers and cloud
It is technically possible to add all the support necessary to work with PGP or S/Mime encrypted emails directly in the client. I.e. protonmail implemented this.
bennyhill··on Software vendors dump open source, go for the cash grab
> Patently false, as the proliferation of SQL and SQL-esque systems has shown

No, SQL is a standard that warrants many DB implementations, redia is an implementation that doesn't necessarily deserve standards.

bennyhill··on Software vendors dump open source, go for the cash grab
At the top of the software stack it is a horror that everyone bellow you can always choose something else. Stand on your own two feet and achieve nothing or invest knowing your investments may be canceled by politics, monetization, etc.

I.e. if there is too much fragments in redis alternatives, whatever skills or contributions you made you can't use in any organization because they will avoid all redis like solutions.

bennyhill··on Software vendors dump open source, go for the cash grab
According to this comment[1], redis is mostly contributions from other people. I find it pretty outrageous when I contribute code to something if the end goal is to succeed from contributions like mine in taking away the platform I was using and making a monopoly lock in on my preferred solution to my needs like Oracle.

bennyhill··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
I believe he will immediately start new scams and rope in fool me twice grade investors and be very effective if he has a nice WFH environment instead of the filtered mail and computer with no network kind of an environment.

He probably is a higher risk of racking up 25 more years every 18 months than a shank specialist.

bennyhill··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
From what I read Madoff didn't seem to, he never actually tried to invest the money and couldn't really have expected his ponzi scheme to become a permanent engine of the economy or anything..

I don't really think that has the moral conclusion people try to imply though. Thinking they could get away with it as a permanent secret gap that no one need ever know about is actually a worse moral character.
