bendangelo··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
This never happens on the deepseek api. It’s always a different provider using lower quants.
bendangelo··on SQLite Is All You Need
litestream is good for this.
bendangelo··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
Yeah it’s all a pain. One thing that helped was using hotwire native. It is basically a web view but it bridges the mobile app with your website and wraps it into a mobile app. This is the only way I can make apps now. Flutter never worked well for me.
bendangelo··on Looking Ahead to Postgres 19
Litestream solves the backup issue. I use it and it’s great.
bendangelo··on Federal judge blocks H1B visa $100K fee
Yes, you'll be hard pressed to find any Canadians at any fast food restaurants now. It's a common scam to pay a Tim Hortons owner 20-30k and he'll make you a manager at the franchise, then he'll give you a shared room where you pay monthly to live there. Then you work for free. The UN literaly wrote how Canada has created a neo-slavery system.
bendangelo··on Ask HN: Why hasn't there been a real competitor to Ticketmaster yet?
Hi, I used to work at a startup in Toronto that did compete against ticketmaster called Uniiverse. In the end they go bought out by ticketmaster. I don't know the details because I left way before then but this is one example of a company trying.
bendangelo··on MiMo-v2.5-Pro-UltraSpeed: 1T model with 1000 tokens per second
I use planning mode in opencode. It has a prompt to tell it to plan it out etc. Then I execute with a smaller model. it works well
bendangelo··on Memory has grown to nearly two-thirds of AI chip component costs
Basically means, “good enough” attitude.
bendangelo··on Don't make me talk to your chatbot
Which product?
bendangelo··on An Update on Heroku
Kamal works well
bendangelo··on Tuning Semantic Search on JFMM.net – Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual
I didn't know sqlite had a vector extension. I'm also using nomic 1.5 with 256 size vectors. After about 44k entries searching is way too slow. I'm thinking about reducing the size to half. What size are you using?

For text search, I'm using lnx which is based off of Tantivy.

I disabled the vector search feature for now but I will re-enable it after some optimization. The site is at https://stray.video

bendangelo··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
When the Nintendo Switch became hackable, ie can play any game, Nintendo saw a massive decrease in sales in Spain. Btw people in Spain pirate the most games in Europe. The decrease was at least 40%. The idea that this is a service issue and piracy doesn’t affect sales is just PR speak. If the game is offline, it’ll be pirated a lot.
bendangelo··on Ask HN: Has anybody built search on top of Anna's Archive?
I’ve done something like this before. Meilisearch will not be viable, because it indexes very slow and it takes up a lot of space.

In my experience only Tantivy can index this much data. Check out Lnx.

bendangelo··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
I'm working on an open-source Pivotal Tracker. I just started a week ago but if anyone is interested in following please checkout the repo: https://github.com/bendangelo/Iterator

I'll have a working project in about a month. But for now it's just a readme.

bendangelo··on Crystal 1.16.0
It's Ruby like syntax is awesome. It reads like psuedo code.
bendangelo··on Coqui TTS: Free Text-to-Speech
This is dead. I recommend Kokoro TTS https://huggingface.co/spaces/hexgrad/Kokoro-TTS
bendangelo··on Devs say AI crawlers dominate traffic, forcing blocks on entire countries
There are bots that scrape https registration sites thats how they usually find you.
bendangelo··on Ruby 3.4.0
Most gems with native extensions won't work. Gems that listen to filesystem changes like guard can be buggy. I recommend using Mac or Linux for Ruby on Rails development.
bendangelo··on Ruby 3.4.0
Use rvm to install ruby. Ruby dev sucks on Windows, mac only.
bendangelo··on Ask HN: Why has no one replaced Ticketmaster?
I worked at a startup that tried to compete with them. Eventually we just sold to them. I don’t know the details sorry.
bendangelo··on Unsubscribe from all LinkedIn email in one click
This won't down vote everything. Votes get throttled, so I guess a setTimeout has to be used.
bendangelo··on Unsubscribe from all LinkedIn email in one click
I unsubscribed from all emails and still get them.
bendangelo··on The Grep Test
Yes there is Cling for c++. Its really awesome. http://blog.coldflake.com/posts/2012-08-09-On-the-fly-C%2B%2...
bendangelo··on EntityJS - HTML5 Javascript Game Engine
The demo was written in the old version of Entity. You can try out the new demo by installing the gem. Those issues have been addressed but I think you're missing the point.

Its the potential of the engine which matters, take a look at the features page to see whats possible.

Thanks for trying the demo!
