bencollier49··on The brain has a ‘low-power mode’ that blunts our senses
Not sure about that but it could certainly be pre-diabetes.
bencollier49··on House Address “Twins” Proximity (2017)
It's an interesting observation that a lot of these are in the North West. We're around there and live on a road with a twin about 500m away. It can occasionally be problematic, but postcodes certainly help.
bencollier49··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
I mean, by definition you wouldn't. You'd just be worse off without knowing about it. Not saying LinkedIn is great, but..
bencollier49··on [dead]
This is really frustrating. I love the Heroku interface - perfect for quick small projects - but it's becoming increasingly unstable / insecure / unreliable.
bencollier49··on Show HN: I made a site that shows jobs where you can work pseudonymously
No, but if the endpoint worker was from the source country (not the outsourced country), then the arrangement would fall foul of anti-tax-evasion legislation in most countries.
bencollier49··on The Floppotron 3.0
This is incredible and what a project! But the retrocomputing enthusiast inside me winces a little at all that lovely old hardware being wrecked..
bencollier49··on I turned down $500k, pissed off my investors, and shut down my startup (2016)
Sadly that is now the case. I think the proper meaning will fall out of use thanks to US media.

I am comforted by reports of US children talking about pavements, dustbins and shopping centres thanks to Peppa Pig.

bencollier49··on Tell HN: Microsoft locks migrated Minecraft accounts, requires phone to unlock
That was quick

bencollier49··on Youth Cultures in East Germany 1985 / Stasi (East German Secret Police)
Arguably, music isn't what young people care about any more (Rick Beato did one of his vidijeremiads about this recently), so there aren't any youth music subcultures. It does seem to have refocused towards identity politics.
bencollier49··on EU reaches deal to make USB-C a common charger for most electronic devices
This was already done once for micro-USB 12 years ago:

bencollier49··on The firefly population could be declining
But if the GMOs are made resistant to pesticides and weedkillers, that encourages the excessive use of chemicals to promote a monoculture.
bencollier49··on We're moving to a four-day work week at Beacon
It's mostly a case of figuring out when people will be available to work together. Some companies have a concept of "core hours". As long as you're active during the core hours, the rest are flexible.
bencollier49··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
> The good news is that Spotify's SDK and API are actually powerful enough that you can build up an entire alternative interface

In most big web services, actual functionality in the API normally seems to leads to its eventual deprecation. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

bencollier49··on Tell HN: Microsoft locks migrated Minecraft accounts, requires phone to unlock
For now.
bencollier49··on Tell HN: Microsoft locks migrated Minecraft accounts, requires phone to unlock
I don't seem to be able to migrate any of my children's accounts, the onboarding process just fails in strange ways. Got tired of trying to make it work.
bencollier49··on My students cheated... a lot
Cheating doesn't seem to be punished any more in the UK because universities need the fees. I witnessed an egregious case of cheating in an MSc exam which was caught, and as far as I can tell, the perpetrator just had to resit.

One of the first year courses in an undergraduate degree ought to be in academic integrity.

bencollier49··on What are the odds that some idiot will name his mutex ether-rot-mutex (2017)
The people who made Docker didn't account for the full range of British double entendres when it came to naming images. I can't remember what the second word was, but I'm pretty sure the first was something along the lines of "excited" and it appeared in a tech brown bag session when I was presenting.
bencollier49··on Firefox appears to be flagged as suspicious by Cloudflare
About once or twice a month I come across a site which hasn't been tested properly on Firefox and a flow of some sort doesn't work. The most recent was accessing scientific papers via a journal and academic society login. The redirect was broken on FF. Oh, and Facebook. Although that seems broken in various ways on all the browsers. Pretty remarkable.
bencollier49··on Kosmos 482: questions around a failed 1972 Venera lander still orbiting Earth
I'm trying to get my head around what sort of damage an object of this size travelling at terminal velocity would do.
bencollier49··on Parmigiano Reggiano makers embedding tiny trackers in rind to fight cheese fraud
More microplastics - it's all a bit depressing, to be honest.

"p-Chip micro-transponders can tolerate extreme temperatures (-200°C to 500°C); withstand microwave irradiation; ride out high g-forces (15,000 g); and hold up against solvents and reagents."

Nice and biodegradable then.

bencollier49··on The Betrayal at Krondor Help Web
I mean to say that Magician was the book which introduced the world.
bencollier49··on The Betrayal at Krondor Help Web
That's a good shout actually. It would make a terrific film in the right hands.
bencollier49··on The Betrayal at Krondor Help Web
The book "Magician" by Raymond E. Feist, which this game came from, is a great read and interesting in as much as the book came after and grew out of a long-running RPG campaign, if I remember correctly.
bencollier49··on BBC Basic for SDL 2.0
That's an interesting cross-disciplinary thesis for back then. What degree were you doing?
bencollier49··on The Day George Soros Broke the Bank of England to Make $1.1B (2021)
Musk is up next.
bencollier49··on Viz Studio: code-based live animation editor
Interesting, this is another one of those product names which have strange connotations in the UK.

Viz Comic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viz_(comics)

They probably hold the trademark for animation in the UK or Europe, I guess?

bencollier49··on A social analgesic? Acetaminophen (paracetamol) reduces positive empathy
Well yes, if you're a fan of hypogonadism.

bencollier49··on A single memory is stored across many connected brain regions
Some types of artificial neural networks are biologically plausible. The layered structure of the cerebral cortex reflects the layers of an artificial network.
bencollier49··on ZX Spectrum: Q&A with some of the folks who worked on legendary PC
If you want to properly go down the rabbit hole as a C64 fan, then there's always the Mega65 (https://mega65.org/). Makes the Next look like a bargain-bin item.
bencollier49··on 1974 Sinclair Scientific Calculator Repair and Restoration
I'm currently reading "Sinclair and the 'Sunrise' Technology", which has a section on the calculator.

They initially had problems with battery life, but took advantage of the fact that they could strobe power to the LEDs and chips without completely compromising functionality to reduce the power consumption by a factor of 100. That allowed them to use hearing-aid batteries.
