benbristow··on Apple unveils contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone
The lollipop and aftershave man in my local nightclub's toilet has one. I'm tempted to give him a pound next time to see what pops up on my bank statement (and for some probably counterfeit cologne).

For context: I don't know if they're a thing in the States but in most male toilets in nightclubs (and more 'clubby' bars) in the UK there's usually an annoying guy in the toilet who turns off the hand driers and gives you paper to dry your hands whilst passively aggresively demanding a tip in return for a lollipop or a spray of various aftershaves/deoderants.

Kind of like Foursquare for beer.

benbristow··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
I mentioned Identity in my first comment. I've never found it as simple as Devise though - especially in an API only setting.

With Devise there's a third-party Gem you can use called devise_token_auth which deals with everything automatically.

benbristow··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
Rails has a templating system for generating emails (standard HTML/ERB files). If you're running an ASP.NET Web API (not MVC) the best way of doing that I've found is via RazorLight which you have to set up manually - https://github.com/toddams/RazorLight

For authentication, with Rails the standard is pretty much Devise or Omniauth (or both) - does everything for you. I've never found anything for ASP like Devise which gives you an entire registration/login system with all the required views/models/migrations in a couple commands.

benbristow··on The Big Mac index: Our interactive currency comparison tool
In the UK the ongoing meme is the price of a Freddo - a small frog shaped piece of milk chocolate by Cadbury's. When I was a kid they were 10p (0.14$), now they're around the 26p (0.35$) mark.

benbristow··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
ASP.NET is great but it definitely comes under the same banner of 'too many choices needed' compared to Rails.

e.g.

Framework - Which .NET framework do you use (Core/LTS)? Do you use MVC, Razor Pages, Web API and Blazor (Server or WebAssembly) or Web API and an alternative JavaScript/TypeScript based frmaework?. Do you use JSON/XML/SOAP or gRPC? How do you serialize your JSON (NewtonSoft.JSON or System.Text.JSON)?

Database - Do you use Dapper, Entity Framework or just utilize a SQLConnection object manually (And then do you use System.Data.SqlClient or Microsoft.Data.SqlClient)? Which database driver do you you use?

Authentication - Do you implement this manually? Do you use something like Identity Framework? Do you use a third party provider like Azure AD(B2C), Auth0 etc. etc.? Do you use header based authentication, JWT's etc. etc?

Jobs - Do you create a separate service project or Windows Service? Do you use HangFire or Quartz?

Email delivery - How do you render your templates? Do you send via SMTP manually or do you use a third party API like Mailgun/Sendgrid etc. etc.

Folder structure - completely up to you, no real standards there.

Testing - Do you use XUnit, NUnit, MSTest, SpecFlow?

benbristow··on Bittersweet Symfony: Devs accidentally turn off CSRF protection in PHP framework
That was quite popular a while back also. I tried to pick it up when I first got into web development and never really understood it (didn't really understand MVC at all) and started using CodeIgniter (which is also still going) instead which seemed more straight forward - although used it more like VC rather than MVC haha.

Quite nice to see they're all going.

benbristow··on Bittersweet Symfony: Devs accidentally turn off CSRF protection in PHP framework
Symfony seems to be going strong still other than this issue.

Laravel is the other big MVC framework for PHP.

benbristow··on Tell HN: Unable to login to HN from Firefox, a Lovecraftian tale
If you've got this dated view about Firefox it might be worth giving it another try. It's come on leaps and bounds, pretty much equally on par of speed against Chrome/Edge etc.

benbristow··on Origin of the Bluetooth Name
Haha. Great to see more websites using SSL encryption but it does make it harder to connect to public WiFi if the OS's captive portal detection doesn't trigger properly.
benbristow··on Origin of the Bluetooth Name
Once you learn the habbit of navigating to neverssl.com as soon as you connect to a public WiFi network to force the captive portal/auth you'll usually not have any issues with it unless the WiFi network itself sucks.
benbristow··on Ask HN: Alternate Email hosting to G Suite
I've been using Office 365 for about a year now after moving from G Suite - didn't like how on G Suite I couldn't use certain products like Stadia and my Google account was essentially hostage to the monthly bill.

I did have to go through the process of transferring my data (Photos) manually to a standard consumer Google account and losing some stuff like my Google Maps Local Guides status, Android purchases (I use an iPhone now anyway but not nice to lose the purchases in-case I switch in the future) and my YouTube account (wasn't much stuff on it anyway) and resubscribing to all my favourite YouTubers. Wasn't too painful - disgraceful how Google allow you to transfer your standard Google Account to a Gsuite one but not the reverse.

Been a rather pleasant experience on the Microsoft side. Integration into the Outlook smartphone apps and Windows 10/11 mail client is second to none and the webapp is solid too. The spam filtering is excellent too.

Quite nice how if you login to Microsoft services and have the same email address for your standard Microsoft account and O365 you can get the option to select which one when logging in.

You can find resellers selling keys for a year of it, I bought mine from Amazon. Will definitely be renewing this year.

benbristow··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
Azure (and I'm sure other cloud providers do) allow you to set email notifications for when your bill goes over a set amount so you can stop it before it happens.

If you're using a cloud provider I'd highly recommend setting one of those up.

In Azure it's under your Subscription and then Budgets

benbristow··on The implementation of the UK Covid-19 dashboard
Get your point.

Those small companies and startups are going to end up using Microsoft/Amazon/Google for their hosting/cloud-services anyway so FAANG still win in the end.

It's mega cheap if you use a VPN in somewhere third-world like India and sign up with a card that doesn't charge forex fees. You can then disable the VPN permanently.

I pay like 130 rupees a month (£1.30 GBP) for it. Worth it just for no ads on my phone and background playback.

Only 'gripe' is that YouTube Music sometimes pops up with random Bollywood/Indian tunes but once you train the alogrithm they disappear too (although I use Spotify anyway so it doesn't really matter).

benbristow··on Google Kills YouTube Originals
MKBHD (Marques Brownlee) did some cool YouTube Originals about old-school tech hardware. Worth a watch.

benbristow··on Chatbots: Still dumb after all these years
It can be quite useful in a weird way. While everyone else is stuck on the chatbot going round in circles, usually typing something like "human" or "talk to human" will make the chatbot connect you with an actual human representative (or ask you a few basic questions first and then connect you).

I've used the trick on various large company's websites when trying to get support and it seems to be quite 'universal'.
