beeskneecaps··on GPT‑5.3 Instant
Your reply was _materially_ better than the previous reply.
beeskneecaps··on HAM radio operators receive signals from Voyager 1 on Dwingeloo telescope
I had always heard "Hertz, Armstrong, and Marconi". 73!
beeskneecaps··on Sora is here
ChatGPT isn't even aware of Sora when I asked it to generate a video. Like why not combine the interface for prompting? Sounds like their having issues scaling a common interface so each team is making their own.
beeskneecaps··on Sora is here
I actually can't imagine what it will do for video gaming. Maybe enhancing cut-scenes, but then why can't they just do the performance and rendering using the gaming engine in realtime?
beeskneecaps··on Intel is trucking a 916k-pound 'Super Load' across Ohio to its new fab
Agreed, but I imagine the only setback is for the insurance company.
beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: Seeking ideas for preschool/school projects
Yeah! And surgical tubing slingshots. A very small construction project where they can learn to use a speed square. Tune the slingshot or catapult until it can launch a handball into a 1x1 meter square some distance away. Also a great way to wear the kids out having to run and collect the ball.
beeskneecaps··on Nextdoor's Heisensubscribe (and Other Dark Patterns)
I found the unsubscribe process tedious but not write-a-whole-blog-about-it-tedious.
beeskneecaps··on How to run a miserable code review
Triggered. Missing from this is the experience where the reviewer rejects for something trivial, then you fix the issue in 1 minute, resubmit, and finally have to wait 24 hours for them to check their code review requests again.
beeskneecaps··on Morse, an open-source interactive tool for inspecting Clojure

beeskneecaps··on ChatGPT is rendering other people's chat history in the sidebar
Maybe this is the Killswitch engineer they were joking about doing their job
beeskneecaps··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone

beeskneecaps··on Crime App 'Citizen' Lays Off Dozens of Employees
They even had a dramatized commercial with the founders’ wet dream of some girl getting mugged by her car, triggering the app, and a bunch of men showing up at the coordinates to pummel the mugger and save the girl.

beeskneecaps··on Crime App 'Citizen' Lays Off Dozens of Employees
They also never follow up on any of the reports, nor can they really. The anonymous comment section is less than useless. The exaggerated camera-shake (maybe due to frame rate reduction in post processing) videos of police lights or a fire in the distance are mildly interesting.

Their business model appears to be some sort of call-for-help button. Idk if buttnugs47 will come running to your aid. Gl with that

beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: What field in computer science will be AI proof
Rookie solution! It should use gap: 20px; and remove the nested div classNames
beeskneecaps··on Puter
Such a cool project. Fyi The camera didn't work on iOS.
beeskneecaps··on I Resurrected “Ugly Sonic” with Stable Diffusion Textual Inversion
Ah the things mankind can achieve.
beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: Which startups have the most interesting pivot stories?
Apparently Nextdoor was previously a "crowdsourced almanac of professional and college athletes" called Fanbase https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/fanbase

Pivot story: https://www.wsj.com/articles/BL-VCDB-16558

beeskneecaps··on Is this the end of social networking?
Agreed, people act like every neighbor is terrible but they're just talking about a few that they saw years ago. Most of Nextdoor is like, did you see this coyote? Also diverse people taking to each other which is actually rare to observe on social media.
beeskneecaps··on Show HN: Colorvote.io – ranking all sRGB web colors by popularity
Excited to see some results from this. I was disappointed that there was no real payoff as an end user who voted. Any way to see the current overall status of like the top 100?
beeskneecaps··on FBI Child ID App
Or just take photos of your child in advance and call 911 if they go missing.
beeskneecaps··on Ploopy open source thumb trackball
What’s wrong with the name? It sounds cute.

Oh: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ploopy

beeskneecaps··on Show HN: VideoMentions – Search YouTube based on the spoken words in videos
This field was a blocker for me as well. If the channel field was an async select that helped autocomplete lookup channel urls by channel name, this would be way more convenient.

My use case would be for ham radio. Lots of ham radio YouTubers film their QSOs (conversations) and mention the callsigns that they make contact with. I want to find the channels that mention my callsign and I'm sure lots of other hams would want to know. Anywho cool project. GL 73

beeskneecaps··on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model
It’s terrifying that all of these models are one colab notebook away from unleashing unlimited, disastrous imagery on the internet. At least some companies are starting to realize this and are not releasing the source code. However they always manage to write a scientific paper and blog post detailing the exact process to create the model, so it will eventually be recreated by a third party.

Meanwhile, Nvidia sees no problem with yeeting stylegan and and models that allow real humans to be realistically turned into animated puppets in 3d space. The inevitable end result of these scientific achievements will be orders of magnitude worse than deepfakes.

Oh, or a panda wearing sunglasses, in the desert, digital art.

beeskneecaps··on Starlink for RVs
It is a low quality voice, but somehow it adds a bit of comedic value to videos. A more natural voice would ironically be less funny IMO.
beeskneecaps··on Medical student surgically implants Bluetooth into own ear to cheat in final
That's so interesting. I (and I imagine many other people) wouldn't have the guts to confront you about removing your hearing aid, even if I knew that they had bluetooth capabilities.
beeskneecaps··on HeyWhatsThat – Calculate viewshed and panorama for any point on Earth
Super cool! I shared this with my HAM radio club. I think it could be a very useful tool for determining LOS for simplex communications!
beeskneecaps··on Mathematically correct breakfast: How to slice a bagel into two linked halves (2009)
Is that sharpie on a bagel? My parents always told me not to plot with my food.
beeskneecaps··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
RH 660s. I was skeptical at first, but it has really held up. I get really good signal reports and people always say they're surprised when I'm using a UV5R. I did drill the microphone port open a little wider by the way and I think that helped get some more gain/clarity as well.

Note that the RH 660s is 27 centimeters collapsed (11 inches), and 1 meter fully extended. It is rigid so not one of the floppy antennas. Collapsed it can take abuse, but when extended, bending is a risk.

beeskneecaps··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
Love my UV5R! I put a telescopic, 1 meter antenna on mine and was able to hit a repeater on Mount Diablo from the Twin Peaks in SF ~42 miles away!

beeskneecaps··on My First 80 Days of VR for Exercise
haha thanks. Yeah I'm trying to make RR the next big thing. Near zero load times, no suit required for haptic feedback, two 576MP cameras, the list goes on. The birds are still obviously drones though.
