bearjaws··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
Love this framing, most industrial warehouses easily use 500kw in power (the EU level for self reporting water consumption), but nobody is drumming up a water war on them.

For whatever reason people have clung onto this idea that the "Gotcha" to slow down AI is to worry about water consumption, and it's an idiotic gotcha.

bearjaws··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
It's probably because that 500kw number is too arbitrary. I work in a single warehouse with robotics based logistics that uses 500kw. Nobody is asking us how much water we use.

Reality is if a regulation is too broad it tends to get overwhelmed and dies when it requires 100 people to enforce.

Even a basic in house data center can push 100kw with a few servers.

bearjaws··on GPT-6.1 Sol replaces GPT-6 Sol after just 7 days, with near-Astra intelligence
What do people get out of being so reductionist?

Every time a new model comes out, people come out in droves "oh I don't notice anything different".

People have been saying this about <currentModel-1> for 2 years now, and the entire state of AI has changed dramatically.

It cannot be that the next AI model isn't better, but also suddenly what they are capable of is on an entirely different level.

bearjaws··on Codex subscribers be waiting for DevDay to know if they should cancel their plan
It's more or less confirmed the 20x plan is being nerfed and a $500 plan is next.
bearjaws··on Andrew Ng: One Skill to Stay Relevant in the Age of AI [video]
His example of writing your own automation to read resumes is actually a terrible use case.

AIs are very good at writing tools that convince other AI that your resume is the best, when in fact its complete bullshit.

I do agree with his idea overall, recently at work we've had QA (as in pharmacy QA) wanting to use Claude to help automate some pipelines between PowerBI and Sharepoint. Was cool to see people who are not very technical pick up Claude Code. Of course agent safety is the big problem really..

bearjaws··on Mercury 2.5 LLM hits 770 tokens per second
Not been my experience, I have it using tool calls in a video game I am building and it correctly adheres ~99% of the time.

I have it retry on failure, but you should do that with any LLM really.

bearjaws··on Mercury 2.5 LLM hits 770 tokens per second
If you care about speed Cerebras gpt-oss-120b is 1400tk/s and "just as smart" in ranking.

I've used it on a few for fun projects and its decent but the speed is crazy to watch.

bearjaws··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
America is at war and losing comically.

Every day 2 major organizations get hacked, whether by groups or state actors, and America continues to sit on its hands.

The government should be creating a new digital defense department to better defend our country, and fund the defense of our nation, but instead it is busy renaming lakes and renaming "AI".

Almost like its run by a bunch of 80 year olds...

bearjaws··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
You're right to push back, and one honest caveat -- they could just be lying.
bearjaws··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
> It is! You explicitly have to opt in, that's why Uber needs have it in their ToS that you accept.

"opt in" - as part of a 300 page TOS that you never read, that is modified 4 times annually and you are told to read all 300 pages again.

bearjaws··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
This is simply untrue, and honestly anyone who thinks our legal system does not provide justice needs to go travel the world to see how it really works for 80% of the global population.

All we really need in the US is for arbitration to be optional, you can start with arbitration but if you believe on good merits you have a case and fail arbitration you should have the right to your day in court.

Throwing out our whole legal system because sometimes the lawyers make the most money is reductionist at best.

bearjaws··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
I've been telling people to be thankful the posts are blatantly AI.

Soon enough it will be harder and harder to tell, and all their feedback is being scraped to improve the next model.

This already demonstrates 2-3 extra sentences of prompting and you get a completely different style that is harder to call out.

bearjaws··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
I am honestly surprised they aren't going lower at this point.

Gitlab must pay a fortune to bot traffic, most of which is malicious or garbage at best.

bearjaws··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
Basically DOA in healthcare, even with a BAA I don't want Claude Cowork enabled in our workstations, ever.

bearjaws··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Not surprising, H1B for my entire career was a cost cutting measure.

Every time we had a layoff some portion would be replaced with H1B.

Every H1B that shared their salary with me has been underpaid.

I know its anecdotal but sharing to see if anyone has seen similar.

bearjaws··on No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
Also having large waves of Saharan dust which is too dry and inhibits hurricane development.
bearjaws··on Shopify moves back to Native from React Native
We made the same change for our patient app last month, took 2 months to rewrite from react-native to two mobile apps, but we had the PoC in under a week.

Interestingly Apple approved it very quickly, which I was afraid of given such a huge rewrite.

bearjaws··on Samsung Debuts zHBM Prototype, Stacking Memory Directly on AI Accelerators
IIRC it's thousands per day on these systems, mainly due to high power density and low mass, even small lapses in computation (100-500ms) rapidly change the temperatures of stacked die.

So even a GPU averaging 98% utilization may have thousands of cycles per day.

Compared to a regular server blade it may be dozens or barely any at all.

bearjaws··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Surprised to see no acknowledgement of how "AI Menu Slop" has become deeply associated with ChatGPT.

Everywhere I go now I see places that blatantly used ChatGPT for their menus or posters and they all look the same.

It feels almost existential to the service, I know its a bit of survivor bias but so many images you can tell immediately are ChatGPT vs other image providers, and I feel many people are sick of them.

bearjaws··on China's robots race ahead
One of the things I keep running into in day to day work is that it seems increasingly thin the labor pools in the USA.

For example, getting developers with strong Healthcare / Pharmacy experience, with robotics to boot is nearly impossible. There's probably only 1,000 in the whole country. So we're forced to train up people. Our pay is quite competitive, for those wondering.

I can only imagine humanoid robotics is in even worse shape, and meanwhile in China theres probably one company with 1,000 engineers in it by itself. With 10 others all competing.

As more and more Boomers, and soon Gen X retire, we're going to be absolutely cooked on skilled labor.

bearjaws··on Google Maps Faces Fury for Caving to Trump
Always funny to me how people expected Google to do anything else other than roll over.

Should be a lesson to the dems next term, either extort the tech giants, the mere threat of the government taking action against Google makes them jump on these dumb name changes. Otherwise, get them on their side to change the law to prevent this kind of shit show ever again.

It's pretty clear you could do serious damage to a corporation as the president and get away with it, and that should change.

bearjaws··on Hy4 preview
China basically has been running a "do nothing, win anyway" campaign since the Trump era.

More and more people view the US as a bad ally, and China is stepping in to help in many places.

People should get out more, go visit South America, Dominican Republic, etc. They have cheaper AC, cheaper cars, cheaper appliances, all because they can import from China without tariffs. This is not to say they have worse quality, I would argue the opposite, much of what they import is at least as good or better than what you get in the USA.

It will be no surprise to me when we end up forced to use equal or worse American AI for a premium in price, while the rest of the world moves on.

bearjaws··on Show HN: My Claude quota ran out in 10 minutes, so I made a tool to find out why

Swear whenever your company decides to invent its own font its like a version of "The Headquarters Curse". You had nothing else better to spend your teams time on so might as well make a new font that 10% of your customers will notice if you are lucky.

They could have just picked any other font and used it. It's a video streaming website, how much text content is there vs video content?

Headquarter Curse: A theory suggesting that companies often experience setbacks or decline after constructing a lavish new headquarters.

bearjaws··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
The problem wasn't as simple as it caused harm, it was the companies knew it caused harm and did nothing.

Just like how Meta, it's staff and leadership all knew they were making decisions that harmed people, and did nothing to stop it while profiting immensely.

bearjaws··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
Needs a 0 added, $160B feels fair. Mesothelioma was $35B in 90s money, so about 3x that today.

Companies keep getting away with this "cost of doing business" fines, the justice department keeps failing at its duties.

The fines either need to wipe out these companies to the point the share holders hold the leadership accountable or nothing will change.
