bdavbdav··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Yep fully appreciate that , being slightly glib- it’s probably a fraction of what it would have been spread out though, and probably feels like more of a binge due to infrequency / age than it actually is!
bdavbdav··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Late 30s. Used to drink a fair amount of wine/beer. I Drink a lot less now.

- Getting older, it affects me for longer. I don’t want to write off feeling tip top the next day. Too high a price to pay. - I try and train (exercise) hard most days - I can’t train anywhere near as well after alcohol. - Kids - when you’re trying to fit work, hobbies, training, learning / self development and kids / family in, there’s not much room for slack. (Which could be considered a bad situation in itself…)

Has just become not worth it regularly. Fortnightly binges work better!

Loved my N95. Had one at the same time as the original iPhone. Ended up using the Nokia. 3G, better camera, native Spotify, and still had navigation.

Yep. US World Cup ruined it for the rest of us :(
bdavbdav··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Not at all true. There’s a whole industry around measuring this (e.g. https://www.edo.com). A massive amount of money is spent on advertising for large companies. McD spend ballpark $3bn across the parent and franchisees, they want to make sure they get value.

This is fantastic.
bdavbdav··on Key symbols we lost to time, pt. 2: The Mac side
At least we get cmd and control as separate keys still, which makes copy/paste/… in a terminal a breeze, without either needing to sacrifice terminal control keys, or remember to use different c/p sequences in different scenarios.

Because you watch as you type. You may not find it useful, I very much do for apps with colliding names.

I always assumed that was intentional to save you arriving through options. I find that behaviour quite useful as I can hit anything beginning with CHE just by typing more letters.

Things would be a massive PITA without WhatsApp for me. I guess iMessage/RCS would do, or one of the many alternatives, but in the UK, WA is the messaging platform.
bdavbdav··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
If you work at a company and it's a company device, then its not your privacy to worry about - you don't use your work device for personal matters, and the concerns are someone elses.

IBM, SAP, Capital One, GE, Cisco, Intel, Deloitte offer a Mac/Windows choice program. Better than just one choice, and arguably a bit better of a privacy record than MS (especially of late)

I’m not quite sure what the point of this article is. Removed some apps and installed a music player on an old phone?

bdavbdav··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Because this isn’t a charity, I’m not paying to work out a new company’s engineering issues. I feel confident, based on the last few laptops, in spending £2k and having it last as my primary for 5 years or so, and then either still having some resale value, or being repurposed for simpler tasks.

I don’t have the same confidence in FW

bdavbdav··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Heh, I remember the “remove the USB A” debacle when I had my OG.

That thing really hacked me off generally. Coming from a MBP 2016 that sipped power, the battery anxiety was real (especially standby drain), and I spent more time than I’d care to admit tweaking tlp to be still a pretty poor drain.

Then the backlight would only work in certain positions.

Love the dream, but it got sold and replaced by a MBP of 2x the price. 4years later the MBP has been used and abused like a tool, dropped from my car boot while trying to carry it and a child, and is still fresh as a daisy. I worry that FW doesn’t fit into “buy once buy well”

I think what expansion cards third parties are extremely niche (SDR) or have much better alternatives (to me, and I suspect most others If they thought about it, the 10gbE cards. Get a dock or two for the presumably limited locations you have 10gb infra and the need for it).

What most others have realised is that devices fit the 99% with USB-C, A and HDMI. Or, increasingly, just USB-C as everyone who needs one has a fleet of cheap dongles to provide just the right IO.

bdavbdav··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
It feels like if you know how far away the strip is (sounds like they did), and can get a bearing on it, they should be all set… with no GPS they should presumably have had even stronger eyes on the charts.

Back when i used to sail, taking bearings with a sighting compass on two points on land / two buoys always gave you a fairly accurate position. Not sure if there is a sighting compass equivalent with elevation angle too on planes?

bdavbdav··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
I had a chat with this with a friend the other day - I feel like I’m much happier to do this now I live in a dwelling on its own. I mess up, it’s my issue. You mess up in an apartment block, it’s a lot more people’s issue, who aren’t opting in to that risk.

ESP home is so powerful like this. And is great to build components for (although I find this part a little complex, lots of Claude help…).

I’ve got a vibe coded “Nuaire Fan” controller to talk UART to my whole home ventilation and present it as a HA controllable fan.

I think the crank the temp hard one way or another is a fairly common approach. It’s what I do to have home assistant use my nest thermostat as a dumb switch.

bdavbdav··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
Frustratingly I couldn’t find a Mikrotik that would offer me a few SFPs, and a 2.5 or two. I wanted ideally just 3 SFPs - two WAN for LB / Failover and one up to switch. 2.5g WAN would do but would rather SFP for future use.

UDM-SE it is for now.
