bbrian··on How a Hacker Proved Cops Used a Stingray to Find Him
I remember reading an article years ago: FBI taps cell phone mic as eavesdropping tool (2006).

> the eavesdropping technique "functioned whether the phone was powered on or off."

bbrian··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
Since the battery is necessarily replaced when the keyboard is, I'm hoping my keyboard breaks after 3.5 years so I get a free battery replacement.
bbrian··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
Reasonable speculation, based on increased lead times when they offered cheaper battery replacements on iPhones. Although, few people would wait long to get a broken key fixed!

bbrian··on Apple faces class action lawsuit over failing MacBook butterfly keyboards
I recently got mine replaced under warranty (CMD key was broken!) and was told $280 when I asked what the cost would be otherwise. It's still extortionate. Part number 605-02931 for 13" 2016 MBP.

Interestingly, when I searched for that number, I learned Twitter OCRs images you post: https://www.google.com/search?q=605-02931+macbook

bbrian··on New studies zero in on roots of depression and how ketamine affects it
You roll the dice, having learned the odds are in your favour.

"The primary sources of street Ketamine in China include diversion or theft of legal pharmaceuticals from medical or veterinary licit trade with some supplies also manufactured in clandestine laboratories (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2010). It is therefore believed that the purity and the quality of street ketamine is high (no research data available) contributing to its increasing popularity among drug users in China." (2014)

Hold option/alt as you click the green maximize button to get the old fill-available-space behaviour.
bbrian··on What's new in Swift 4.1
I hope it becomes great news for all developers. Swift is a dream to work with. It's certainly the closest compiled language I've used to the English language.
bbrian··on Why you can’t cash out pt 2: Bitcoin and KYC/AML
I was give 0.5 BTC at a hackathon run by an Irish bank (Ulster Bank) a few years ago. I guess when I cash out, I'll cash out with them!

bbrian··on Ask Y Combinator: How often can YC companies post jobs to the front page of HN?
I would feel morally obliged to warn people against working in the YC company I spent a few months with.
bbrian··on The Decline of Imgur on Reddit and the Rise of Reddit's Native Image Hosting
I use imgapp for imgur. It's not perfect but it's better! What I'd love would be images to be marked as seen so I don't have to scroll past again, and I'd like it to be a meme social network so I can share the lolz with my friends without inundating group chats or Facebook/Instagram.

bbrian··on Milpitas BART Station to Open in December, VTA Says
I don't know where your "50 mile ride" comes from when we're talking about a ten mile extension. I put my bike on Bart all the time.

Given ~95% of households in the locality own cars, I assume this extension is addressing congestion or pollution; it's hardly a $2.3 billion investment so 77k people don't have to drive as far to the next Bart stop. I wasn't suggesting taking cars away from people, I was trying to make the existing roads work better, not just in the locality but throughout the area.

bbrian··on Milpitas BART Station to Open in December, VTA Says
I'd love to see what a $2.3 billion investment in cycling could do for a locality. A quick search says the population of East Bay is 2.5 million – that would be a fairly decent bicycle with lights, locks and helmet for every person. The number of cars taken off the road would make the others flow freely.
bbrian··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
Of course I use bookmarks, and never revisit them!

I have some bookmarks.html files from old browsers somewhere that I treat as memories – snapshots of what I was interested in back in college etc.

bbrian··on Australian regulator alleges Apple misled iPad/iPhone users over consumer rights
In Ireland, there are no Apple stores but I've often been to the repair section of the main retailer (chargers!) and their policy is obviously deception. When there's a problem they ask is the device under warranty (one year) and unless you're aware of your EU consumer rights, they won't tell you and are hoping you'll walk away, the truth being:

"Under Irish consumer law, consumers are entitled to a free of charge repair or replacement, discount or refund by the seller, of defective goods or goods which do not conform with the contract of sale. These rights expire six years from delivery of the goods." [1]

My other negative experience was when my iPhone 5 was covered under recalls for the battery [2] and sleep/wake button [3], but Apple refused to fix it without a full screen replacement, for a "crack" so small I hadn't even noticed before sending it in for repair. It became a party piece of mine to challenge people to find the crack.

bbrian··on Recompiling the Lost Vikings
Cool! Back in 2001 I had the domain TheLostVikings.com

Wow, it's still on the ISP hosting. I haven't seen this in years: http://homepage.eircom.net/~lostvikings/ The download links are broken but lots of animated gifs are still there.

bbrian··on British man with type 1 diabetes to receive tests after coming off insulin
IIRC, you're not even supposed to rely on the Freestyle Libre exclusively, you've still to take the traditional finger pricks reasonably frequently to be sure its calibration isn't wrong.
bbrian··on USCIS Will Temporarily Suspend Premium Processing for All H-1B Petitions
I was at an immigration talk recently and the lawyer advised against it saying the office managing the expedited applications (SoCal) is stricter than the regular process.
bbrian··on Ask HN: Which book have you re-read recently?
I'm in love with Rethinking Innateness. I'm posting half in the hope someone suggests an up to date version, but it's brilliant and fascinating itself. It was prescribed when I was studying my CS MSc and I've read it three times now.

I got initially into computers because I would press something on the keyboard and knew there was a sequence of commands that directed the graphics card to output something – I needed to understand that. Now, as I assume applies to so many people here, my curiosity has expanded to human development, this books is _the bridge_ between CS and psychology.

bbrian··on The Purpose of Sleep? To Forget, Scientists Say
I frequently recommend the Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism (AronRa) videos on YouTube. They're obviously more about addressing creationism, but it's enjoyable and educational and necessarily explains a lot about evolution that I didn't know previously. One great part is where he explains the lineage of species by using folders on Windows.

bbrian··on H-1B Visas: U.S. Lawmaker Re-Introduces Bill to Tighten Rules
The J1 isn't comparable to the H1B – it's a 12 month visa which must be started within 12 months of graduation. There's also no suggestion of working in academia on a J1 – it's the "intern" visa. I'm on it now in San Francisco, with a view to getting a H1B.
bbrian··on The inventor of the red Solo cup has died
I once, in Ireland, threw a teen movie themed party. The red cups were key to it. I had to order them on eBay but they were weren't real Solo cups, just cardboard. They still went down a treat! Eventually somebody capitalised on the novelty and started importing them.
bbrian··on Lessons learnt from monetising my Chrome Extension
I have a similar 'lessons' write-up of a Chrome extension I made a few years ago. I built it to enable safe-search on all the computers in a few schools I was working in and deployed it with Group Policy:

bbrian··on Thepiratebay.com domain has been suspended
http://pirateproxy.nl/ is what I use in Ireland, due to court ordered blocks, and it's working – as evidenced by the Alice in Chains box set I just downloaded that I once bought on CD and have no idea what happened to in the meantime!
