bblough··on What should you think about when using Facebook?
I also just took the plunge. I guess I'm at about 3 weeks (late next week is one month).

For the past several months, I spent some of my free time going through my history, deleting almost everything I ever posted (note, there's a way to view your timeline by specific year, which seems to include more than the regular timeline view). The few things I couldn't delete (because it didn't give me an option) or that I didn't want to delete (e.g, photos I want to download later), I set to viewable only by me. Then without a peep, I deactivated my account. I probably should have written a script to do this rather than taking all the time. But to be honest, doing it manually was a nice jog down memory lane, even if it was really time consuming.

At this point, I have no plans to reactivate my account, with one exception. At some point, when I decide that "it's time," I'll reactivate my account, download an archive of the remaining items, delete what I can of what remains, and use the "account delete" option (for whatever good that actually does). Then that will be it.

Out of habit, I still frequently catch myself saying "ooh, interesting article, I should post that to facebook. Oh, wait..." Hopefully it's only a matter of time before that stops.

bblough··on Wine 2.0 released
> They're rejecting your reports because the issues are often fixed in newer versions

Sure, newer versions fix bugs from older versions. But they don't delete/archive the old reports after a new release, so the reports that are there are already a mix of supported and unsupported versions anyway.

So, I don't see the harm in accepting new reports against older versions, particularly when old versions are still found several major distros (particularly the LTS versions of those distros)

bblough··on Wine 2.0 released
Nowhere did I say that the WINE folks should support old versions.

I said that the information in the user report could be relevant and useful to people who still use that version, even if it's unsupported.

These are informational reports of "this app behaves this way under version x." So, and this is isn't about supporting an old version, this is about allowing or not allowing information about old versions in a database.

I don't think more information is harmful to the users, especially when it can help them make an informed decision about whether or not they must upgrade in order to be able to run a particular app.

bblough··on Wine 2.0 released
Unless you run Debian stable (or probably any LTS distro), in which case they don't want your reports because "your software is too out of date".

I find this attitude odd, because there are (at least) tens of thousands of wine installs under Debian alone. Surely the information is relevant and useful to people, even if the version is no longer officially supported.

As a result, I've stopped wasting my time filing reports only to have them rejected.

bblough··on GIMP – 2016 in review
I guess I'm in the minority, but not only does this behavior not bother me, for me it's a feature.

Most of the time, if I'm trying to draw outside the boundary, then it's because I've got the wrong layer selected. So it saves me from drawing on the wrong layer and then having to deal with trying to get the changes moved to the correct layer.

In cases where the above doesn't hold (i.e., I actually want to draw inside the smaller layer), then it's easy enough to expand the layer's size.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

bblough··on Developer claims Linux forced Microsoft to up its Windows game support
I'm not using a steambox or steamos. But I game on Linux exclusively, thanks in-part to the efforts of Valve and Humble Bundle.
bblough··on Great talks and presentations at 33C3
It's already on the list, but I thought the video on hacking cable/satellite TV was amazing. I've done software reverse engineering, but don't have any experience with hardware RE. It was great to see an overview of the process, and especially, how someone de-caps a ROM chip and reverses the code stored within.

bblough··on Things I hate about Git (2012)
> The UX of hg was more intuitive for users coming from SVN and CVS

I second this. Trying to go from SVN to git left me confused and frustrated, while I found it much easier to switch to hg. Once I had been using hg for a while, I found that I had absorbed enough of the difficult/confusing stuff that switching to git was relatively painless.

bblough··on No Man's Sky: Update 1.03
Thanks for mentioning Everspace - I hadn't heard of it before. I'm looking forward to giving it a try when they release the Linux version.
bblough··on Ask HN: Disabling paste in password boxes - why is it practiced?
H&R Block Online also does this, and is the primary reason that I switched away from them this year.

Ironically, I switched to TurboTax, but didn't have the same issue because the login is done automatically via my bank login.

Does anyone know of a decent online tax app that doesn't disable the pasting of passwords?

It sounds like you're taking "sex outside marriage" to mean "sex with outside partners, while married."

I think the intended meaning here is "sex without being married" (or at least that's how I interpret it).

bblough··on How the 'hoverboards' took off in spite of laws against them
I didn't say that. If it makes you feel better, mentally replace "I could have" with "One could have" (It's too late for me to edit it)
bblough··on How the 'hoverboards' took off in spite of laws against them
According to Mayo Clinic, walking at 3mph burns between 314-469 kcals/hr [1], depending on weight. That's 3140-5628 kcals for 10-12 hours of walking, depending on weight.

Now consider the amount of calories available [2]. I could have the IHOP meal for breakfast, walk for 12 hours (side note: who the heck has time to walk for 12 hours?), not eating anything all day, then eat the Dickie's meal for dinner, and still be well over the kcals burned.

jp555 is right, you can't out-exercise a bad diet - what you eat matters.

bblough··on Ask HN: Company got acquired, new contract seems oppressive
Fortunately, I wasn't desperate, so I had the advantage of being able to walk away. And I agree with you - I think that ultimately I dodged a bullet.

It's a shame, though - I think I would have had a lot of fun working there and believe I would have made good contributions to the team. I'm disappointed, but I consider it their loss. Oh well.

bblough··on Ask HN: Company got acquired, new contract seems oppressive
> I have literally never encountered a company that stood by such a loaded term and lost their would-be new hire over it

Not to discount your experience, but I actually just had this happen. I wound up walking away from an otherwise nice offer because they weren't willing to budge on their "we own everything you do, inside or outside of work" clause.

So while it may be rare, it does happen.

bblough··on Ask HN: How Do I Learn to Type?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that did by gaming.

While not a MUD, I played a lot of EverQuest back in its heyday. I went from hunt-and-peck to 60+ wpm.

Though admittedly, typing lessons would have taken a lot less time.

bblough··on Ask HN: What to code for learning?
I understand the desire to innovate, especially for many of the people on HN. But not having anything you need/want (i.e., you current tools meet your current needs), is a problem? Really?
bblough··on Ask HN: Best online CS degree program?
The graduation requirement is "intermediate-level" skills in any modern foreign language (not necessarily Spanish). This translates to 3 semesters at college level. Considering that 2 semesters (or 2 years in HS) is the entrance requirement, an extra semester really isn't that bad.
bblough··on Ask HN: Best online CS degree program?
Both University of Illinois and Florida State University have online BS degrees in CS.
bblough··on Announcing Online MS in Computer Science in Collaboration with Georgia Tech
Florida State University offers an online BS in CS - http://distance.fsu.edu/students/online-programs?prog_id=177 and it's actually a CS program rather than a glorified IT program.

Generally, 2-way interaction is done via message board, but most (maybe all?) of the instructors I've had so far keep specific office hours and available are for web chat or telephone calls during those hours.

Any of the prereqs that you're missing could potentially be taken as a transient at another institution (be it locally, or online). This is how I've handled the few classes I was missing.

Based on the rates listed on the page linked above, it should be around $25k for the whole thing (based on needing 60 credits of upper-division classes, since you already have a Bachelor's), even as a non-resident.

bblough··on Ask HN: Why you do open source?
I don't have to be extorted by companies that want me to pay extra for bug fixes, or ignored by companies that won't fix bugs at all. If a bug concerns/affects me enough, I can fix it myself, or hire someone to fix it. (yes that's still paying someone to fix the bug, but to me it's different)

And if I do fix a bug myself, I can make a patch available to others so they can benefit as well.

Ultimately, it's about control of my resources.
