bb123··on U.S. pedestrian deaths reach a 40-year high
I think this is a known phenomenon which is why Aussie police give double demerits for driving tickets on long weekends.
bb123··on A daytime nap is good for the brain
Haha nope, Tesla Model 3. The back seat is juuust wide enough to lie down in the back for a nap. I’m 6’2” so it wouldn’t be comfortable overnight but for half an hour it is enough.
bb123··on A daytime nap is good for the brain
I sneak off to the parking garage at lunch time to have a Power Nap in the back of my car. Tinted windows mean I'm totally invisible, and I can get 25 min of good rest. It is a highlight of my day
bb123··on A daytime nap is good for the brain
> There are so many studies, over decades, showing these thoughts to have no grounding.

Can you be a little bit more specific? I'd be interested to hear what the counterpoint is as personally I feel refreshed after a 15 min lie down in the back of my car at work, even if I didn't perceptibly fall asleep.

bb123··on New superbug-killing antibiotic discovered using AI
They probably didn't save much time but you must think of the positive things mentioning the AI buzz word will have done for their funding.
bb123··on UK’s GDPR replacement could wipe out oversight of live facial recognition
As if Auth-Left Labour wouldn't also love this.
bb123··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
That is quite funny I have a British accent and live in the US and I often worry that my accent comes across abrupt and un-friendly, especially in situations like that.
bb123··on The King doesn't own all the swans in Britain
You’re phrasing this like it actually has some bearing on how land is owned in the U.K. This is just a quirk of tradition - for all intents and purposes the freeholder is the ultimate owner of the land.
bb123··on Show HN: An interactive map showing live wind farm generation in Great Britain
Thank you!

Hi Rob! I have a request from an avid user of your visualisations in the Octopus Energy App. Could you please switch the y axis on real time data from Octopus Home Mini from Wh/min to just instant Watts? kWh/day makes sense on larger time scales but Wh/min is pretty meaningless to most people. Also it seems like it would be more readable as a line graph with datapoints, than a bar chart. A line graph would also allow for better interpolation between missing readings too.
bb123··on Bed Bath and Beyond files for bankruptcy
Ikea is a good option in this market. And generally for household basics.
bb123··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
Green tea in the UK isn’t a staple like black tea is but it is still quite common. All supermarkets tend to carry a good range of teas including green, jasmine, mint and chamomile.
bb123··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
The U.S. uses a Gallon measurement which is about 20% smaller than an international one so you have to factor that in.
bb123··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
That is not quite true - you’re right that it is not Tesla specific but many current EVs are far less efficient: https://insideevs.com/news/567087/bev-epa-efficiency-compari...

Particularly German made ones, for some reason.

bb123··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
Realistically what would Apple have to do here to satisfy you?
bb123··on Google workers in London stage walkout over job cuts
> The cold hard truth is that people would rather the 3-4x salaries.

This sounds like an assumption based firmly in the American value system. This part is often missed:

> 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday

Anyway comparing a government job to big tech isn't fair. It is big tech salaries that are unusual, not the other way around.

bb123··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
The Model 3’s system is one of the few out there that can actually compete with/replace CarPlay.

In reality I don't believe that over-optimizing your online dating profile by lying is a major issue. If your objective is to use your profile to find dates, it's important to avoid misrepresenting yourself as it only delays the rejection from the online stage to the in-person stage, which is a more time-consuming and expensive process. Additionally there is limited benefit to exaggerating your profile because your matches will eventually meet the true version of yourself anyway. I think it's best to aim to present an authentic and positive portrayal of yourself in your profile. Ultimately honesty is key as it will lead to more genuine and compatible matches.
bb123··on Europe pushing for lunar time zone
He's referring to the current animosity between the UK and Europe. Both groups frequently go out of their way to make life harder for the other. The EU proposing the English GMT would be unlikely in this climate. Also FWIW I think only Portugal overlaps with GMT.
bb123··on Europe pushing for lunar time zone
Why do we need to make it a software problem? The existing system makes it a trivial mental calculation.
bb123··on Ask HN: How do you manage your digital footprint in 2023?
I’ve been loving iCloud Hide My Email. Every site gets a different disposable address.

The fun part is when I do get spam I know exactly which site has sold my info. It is a handy way to know who to never do business again with.

bb123··on Bug identified after Alaska Airlines planes bump runway while taking off
So the bug told pilots the aircraft was lighter than it was. I wonder if that would have also factored into the fuel load calculations? It seems like it could have the potential for the crew to take off with less fuel than they need.
bb123··on The Heart of ChatGPT’s Darkness
I find the hint that ChatGPT et al. need government regulation kind of bizarre. What would they mandate? “LLMs can’t be mean”?
bb123··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
I have ~1TB of photos and I liked the idea of hosting this on Digital Ocean, but it looks like a volume of that size would run me over $100/mo. I'll have to stick with iCloud Photos for now.
bb123··on Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011)
Mechanical ventilation with Heat Recovery (MHVR) mostly solves this. Air is actively exchanged with outside to regulate humidity from cooking etc but heat from the waste air is captured and used to warm the incoming air. These are now standard in homes in the UK.

bb123··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
I don't think anyone had an issue with their message - just their method.
bb123··on Average EV fast-charging costs soar above petrol
The battery is warrantied for 120,000 miles or 8 years. The stated design life is 3-500,000 miles.
bb123··on Average EV fast-charging costs soar above petrol
That's correct. It's like arguing that food is too expensive when you only eat premium take-out. For most people it's something you do maybe once a month.
bb123··on Average EV fast-charging costs soar above petrol
I have a Tesla Model 3. Your reasoning only holds true if you assume that the alternative to buying an electric car was to buy no car at all. In reality if it wasn't a Tesla it would have been an ICE car in a similar market segment such as a BMW 3 Series. That means similar initial cost + all the fuel and servicing it needs. It ends up way more expensive.
bb123··on Average EV fast-charging costs soar above petrol
There are plenty of tariffs that offer cheaper home charging than that. I get 6 hours of 7.5p/kWh. On a 7kW charger that's enough for a 0-80% charge every night.
