batmanthehorse··on Make macOS consistently bad unironically
The notification buttons have always felt a little squishy and unresponsive since they were added. They’re terrible.
batmanthehorse··on A forged Apple employee badge
Interesting but I wasn't entirely convinced that it's fake. There might be more to this story. Maybe the seller is the one who got scammed when they bought it 20 years ago.
batmanthehorse··on The iPad Pro Manifesto (2024 Edition)
Yes, I think some of the items here are reasonable but some of them (like full virtualization of desktop OS) don’t fit the iPad model. Just get a Mac at that point.
batmanthehorse··on It's always TCP_NODELAY
In CentOS/RedHat you can add `quickack 1` to the end of a route to tell it to disable delayed acks for that route.
batmanthehorse··on It's always TCP_NODELAY
Thank you, found this: https://github.com/sschroe/libnodelay
batmanthehorse··on It's always TCP_NODELAY
Does anyone know of a good way to enable TCP_NODELAY on sockets when you don't have access to the source for that application? I can't find any kernel settings to make it permanent, or commands to change it after the fact.

I've been able to disable delayed acks using `quickack 1` in the routing table, but it seems particularly hard to enable TCP_NODELAY from outside the application.

I've been having exactly the problem described here lately, when communicating between an application I own and a closed source application it interacts with.

batmanthehorse··on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists
1. The article literally says ‘ “Spotify already pays nearly 70% of every dollar it generates from music to the record labels and publishers that own the rights for music, and represent and pay artists and songwriters," it continues.’

2. It’s a simplified example for explanatory purposes

batmanthehorse··on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists
There were multiple responses questioning how this was different, so I'll respond here:

- 2 users, A and B, each pay $10/month

- User A listens to 20 Taylor Swift songs

- User B listens to 5 Radiohead songs

- Spotify gets a 30% cut

Currently:

- Spotify gets $6

- Taylor Swift gets $11.20

- Radiohead gets $2.80

If each subscriber's bill was split separately:

- Spotify gets $6

- Taylor Swift gets $7

- Radiohead gets $7

So this change would benefit artists that less active Spotify users listen to.

Right now the less active users are paying to support the listening of the most active users.

Personally this would make me feel like my money is more directly supporting the artists I care about.

batmanthehorse··on Everything wrong with tech in 2023 (in no particular order)
Yes the second half seemed like a lot of reworded repeats. These 50 points could be 30. But still a good list.
batmanthehorse··on Show HN: Karektar – Bitmap Font Designer
I think it doesn’t work because the footer covers it. That seems to be the problem on my iPhone.
batmanthehorse··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
Yes that’s the first thing I thought of. Seems like a terrible name for an app meant to strengthen relationships. App idea seems good but my unsolicited advice would be to change the name asap.
batmanthehorse··on Govt warns kenyans about Worldcoin
article gets it wrong and sounds like a WorldCoin press release in the first sentence:

"The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has cautioned Kenyans against sharing their details with WorldCoin, a financial public utility that allows the public to easily access digital currencies without the need for a third party to facilitate the transactions."

batmanthehorse··on Behind the Pretty Frames: Diablo IV
I was also very surprised by the lack of polish visible in the first 15 minutes of gameplay. It’s still a very good looking game but there are enough rough edges that it’s noticeable and doesn’t seem up to Blizzard’s old standards.
batmanthehorse··on Suspicious iOS KeePass Client
That’s a stretch
batmanthehorse··on Exploiting aCropalypse: Recovering truncated PNGs
I think making this tool readily available right now is doing to result in a lot of people being doxxed who otherwise wouldn’t be.

Some people would just lose interest if there isn’t an easy tool immediately available, and also it would give potential victims or image hosts more time to fix or delete vulnerable pics.

batmanthehorse··on Apple, please don’t take all of the buttons away
I’m using an official Apple iPhone 14 case right now and it covers the buttons with other buttons which will transfer the pressure. You never touch the actual original buttons (but the silence switch is exposed).
batmanthehorse··on Apple, please don’t take all of the buttons away
That’s not true. Starting with iPhone 7 the front home button is haptic solid state. It feels better than the old one and breaks less.

For this reason, I’m totally fine with them doing the same for volume buttons. Also feels great on the AirPod pros

batmanthehorse··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Lucas made 6 Star Wars movies in 30 years. That’s not even close to what Disney is doing.
batmanthehorse··on Sony’s racing AI destroyed its human competitors by being nice (and fast)
Yes, but more memory and processing power might mean the AI is actually better at performing the same task. Cleaner, pre-processed input data is cheating in a different way.
batmanthehorse··on FTC Sues Walmart for Facilitating Money Transfer Fraud
Can you post a link to the article? I’m having a hard time understanding the scam based on your comment.
batmanthehorse··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
Yeah this was very bizarre to me. It seems like the author just missed the basic fact that the H13 is the same H that makes it 'true' HEPA.

He can (and did) argue that this distinction doesn't really matter, but the distinction is still part of a well-defined standard that The Wirecutter didn't invent.

batmanthehorse··on A look at power on the new M1 Max
Yeah, I was eagerly waiting for the new MBP but ended up returning it (unopened) because I was disappointed that its 10% heavier than the last model. I think my ideal would be a thin, fanless 16 inch with 32GB RAM. I'm fine with some power throttling under sustained load, but I understand why they filled the new Pros with big fans to avoid that.
batmanthehorse··on A Prototype Original iPod
yes everyone hated that. that's why itunes failed and we're still manually copying files to this day.
batmanthehorse··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
they should also stop that
batmanthehorse··on Show HN: Dendron – fast open-source note-taking in VSCode
I've struggled for so long to find a note-taking app. I basically need something like Atom, VSCode, or Notepad++ (advanced text editing features) and then ability to embed images. Half of my job is taking screenshots and analyzing logs.

I use Atom for text right now, and OneNote for images, but it would be ideal to combine them. I've tried a few Atom plugins that say they can do this, but none work (possibly due to API changes over time).

Anyone know of a good solution?

batmanthehorse··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
the energy consumption is my biggest criticism, so the answer is "no" (even though you try to sidestep that). buying a pack of gum with bitcoin could power a whole house for 2 months, that's awful and irresponsible.
batmanthehorse··on Interactive Comparison of Map Projections
It's a fact of projecting the surface of a sphere onto a 2D plane. You can't see every side of the earth at once in Google Earth. Even the globe you look at in Google Earth is distorted since it's still a 3D projection into 2D. Looking at it from the equator, countries at the equator will appear larger relative to countries near the poles.

Anyway! This site is really cool. I think 'Natural Earth' is most satisfying to me subjectively. Looks close enough to what we're all raised with, and seems to have a good balance of various types of distortion.

batmanthehorse··on Co-founder of Gokada found decapitated, dismembered inside New York condo
Any sources regarding Credit Karma being a data collection scheme?
batmanthehorse··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
I had this after I dropped my right earbud ~3 feet. There was a click every time I took a step with noise canceling or transparency mode. The outer grille on mine was very barely dented. I think this caused the external mic to pick up unexpected noise and try to cancel noise that wasn't there.

Apple was very quick to send a replacement.
