basugasubaku··on Microsoft Japan’s 3-day weekend boosts worker productivity
It looks like this was a sales department. The metric of productivity was sales per employee according to the tweeted image and the Nikkei article.

The sources also mention better use of meeting time via an increase in shorter meetings and teleconferences.

basugasubaku··on Ebola Cases Could Reach 1.4M in 4 Months, C.D.C. Estimates
The article links to the CDC report: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/su63e0923a1.htm?s_c...

The CDC report and the article present both worst-case and best-case scenarios for Liberia and Sierra Leone. 1.4M is worst-case (no intervention) and "almost ended" is best-case ("If, by late December 2014, approximately 70% of patients were placed either in ETUs or home or in a community setting such that there is a reduced risk for disease transmission [...] then the epidemic in both countries would almost be ended by January 20, 2015").

basugasubaku··on Yitang Zhang, 2014 MacArthur Fellow
His advisor's memoir is also interesting:

"So after Yitang graduated, I told him the normal way of seeking jobs. When I looked into his eyes, I found a disturbing soul, a burning bush, an explorer who wanted to reach the north pole, a mountaineer who determined to scale Mt. Everest, and a traveler who would brave thunders and lightnings to reach his destination. Yitang never came back to me requesting recommendation letters. Apparently, he did not seek a job. Even to the date Yitang announced his monumental result I did not know what was the best for him. Though I was sure of one thing, − he could not survive the life of “tenure-track,” “tenure,” and “promotions”. It was not his type. I regarded him as a free spirit, and I should let him fly."

basugasubaku··on Servo Layout Engine: Parallelizing the Browser [video]
It's because it sets max-width: 600px on the <video>.

Blink currently doesn't force fullscreen elements to width/height 100%/100%.

basugasubaku··on Japan's ninjas heading for extinction
Her name doesn't necessarily mean "bow", though. "Yumi" is a reading of many first names, like 裕美 (something like "full of beauty") or 由美, which are more common than 弓 (bow).
basugasubaku··on [dead]
This article makes a lot more sense if you see the sister article:

basugasubaku··on Show HN: 10-minute programming challenge. Let's do more of these.
I get: "The fastest route is 232 マイル, which will take approximately NaN to NaN steps if you walked it."
basugasubaku··on Stanford's Most Popular Major Is Now Computer Science
At Stanford, you don't declare your major until your 2nd or 3rd year, and can change it after declaring. Students declaring CS will have already taken a number of CS courses, including the fundamentals of CS.
basugasubaku··on Garry Kasparov defeats Alan Turing in chess in 15 moves
They set the machine to play at 2-ply, i.e., it only looks two moves ahead. It's not so surprising even a good algorithm would lose in 15 moves at 2-ply.

The article mentions they also played at 5-ply and it lasted 27 and 30 moves against Kasparov, which is probably better than most casual players would do.

basugasubaku··on Rejection Letters for a faculty position
In case anyone else had trouble:

University of Colorado at Boulder: pg. 19

Yale: pg. 26

Colorado School of Mines: pg. 14

I must agree the Colorado School of Mines struck me as warm as well, from the get-go, before I read your comment.

Your get_tail_child always returns NULL

basugasubaku··on Sex in the Bathroom and the Problem of Offline Data
I like this interview with Nabokov in 1969.

Q: How do you rank yourself among writers (living) and of the immediate past?

Nabokov: I often think there should exist a special typographical sign for a smile – some sort of concave mark, a supine round bracket, which I would now like to trace in reply to your question.

basugasubaku··on Taxes Prompt More Americans to Renounce Citizenship
It's more like if you live overseas, it's expensive to pay double taxes. So some people are renouncing citizenship partly to pay less tax, not just to avoid paperwork.
basugasubaku··on Turning down Zynga: Why I opted out of the $210M Omgpop buy
He said "I didn't work on Draw Something."
basugasubaku··on Yammer CEO won't hire anyone from Yahoo who doesn't quit in next 60 days
I just hope people understand Yahoo Japan is not Yahoo. They are basically separate companies.
basugasubaku··on Chrome connects to three random domains at startup
I'm not sure what you meant by that, but the article does in fact link to the relevant source:

basugasubaku··on Courtney Love does the math (2000)

basugasubaku··on Watch a VC use my name to sell a con
It's been like that since like 1999. And there's always been this comment in the source:

<!-- mail me if you find the secret -->

<!-- (no, you can't have a hint) -->

basugasubaku··on How to Rock a Systems Design Interview
That's not what the article says at all. In fact, a CS education is likely not good enough. There are plenty of new graduates who do not know much about, e.g., IPC or have a good feel for real world performance numbers. The article rightly recommends working on actual systems including OSS projects.
basugasubaku··on Gates to students: Don’t try to be a billionaire, it’s overrated
I think she is saying if I want to be B, and B is Bill Gates, then I want to be Bill Gates, therefore the question "how can I become like you, Mr. Gates?"
basugasubaku··on What Does It Take To Get A Job At Google? (Infographic)
A few of those are from the 2003 book "How Would You Move Mount Fuji?" which is about Microsoft interviews. They are part of Silicon Valley/Seattle lore, but likely no longer used.
basugasubaku··on Show HN: Launching my product in Japan
Congrats. Just some feedbacks.

- I don't know if "ショーケースサイト" will be understood. Actually the most I learned what Limelight is was by mousing over the tab and reading the title in the tooltip.

- If you click "blog" you get English.

- If you click "mailing list" you get English.

- The pricing plan is in US dollars.

- I wanted to follow your Japanese twitter account, but there were no tweets.

basugasubaku··on Aaronsw indicted for hacking MIT network to download millions of JSTOR docs
The papers are from JSTOR, not MIT. MIT pays for a subscription to JSTOR like many other universities do.
basugasubaku··on The Top 100 most popular Google+ users
He had a personal Facebook account but quit after being unable to keep up with all the friend requests. Now he has a Facebook fan page.
basugasubaku··on Why I'm Rooting For Google+
I think you are confusing the wall with the news feed. The original wall was a single wiki on your profile (ca 2004?), later replaced with public messages on your profile. The news feed is the updates you see when you login.
