barry0079··on Talent May Be Shifting Away from Superstar Cities: Study
As someone making £27k in the UK your salary is also crazy to me. The kind of numbers that get thrown around really have no meaning to me.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What wiki/intranet do you use at your company?
I get the feeling confluence is as good as the effort you put in. For the love of God tag your pages or don't complain when nobody knows they exist.
barry0079··on The Chalk Market: Where Mathematicians Go to Get the Good Stuf
An interesting thing I remember reading about Japan was that post war it rapidly industrialised with massive success in a very short amount of time. Something which brought great pain and poor conditions to many countries that tried to do the same.
barry0079··on Young adults have less to spend on non-essentials, study says
As an anecdotal example the cost of a pint of beer in London can be 3 to 4 times as expensive as what I'm used to in the South West. For other basic necessities I agree with you however.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Why are phone numbers considered a secure personal identifier?
I'm reminded of the following which was posted to HN a while back. https://github.com/googlei18n/libphonenumber/blob/master/FAL...
barry0079··on Ask HN: How many hours of your job are enjoyable?
Maybe 3 in a week? This is a refreshing read. I was honestly terrified that most people relish the opportunity to work.
barry0079··on Why Asians wear surgical masks in public (2014)
One of the other interesting reasons. A girl may not have done her makeup for the day.
barry0079··on Ask HN:How to warn a company about the security issues if they refuse to listen?
While it doesn't benefit you in the long term and you run risk of being blames as others have said. Try contacting the government considering they seem to utilize their services. I think they're much more likely to take it seriously.
barry0079··on Ask HN: How you ever quit because the engineering culture is too messed up?
I love John Wooden. He's eloquent and full of fantastic life lessons. I always jokingly say he's my spirit animal for a reason.
barry0079··on What would a EvE online Internet look like?
Ever since I got a job I haven't had time for it. It really is a full time job to play, I noticed a lot of people who would play from work with cushy IT jobs.
barry0079··on Ask HN: How do I stop caffeine intake without losing productivity?
I cut down to a single coffee in the morning followed by decaff for the rest of the day. I also found a lot of success with herbal/fruit teas. For me it's just about having a hot drink at this point.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Advice for starting a fashion brand?
Just an idea. How about creating a social media "Brand" presence? Show off the fashion with it being unavailable. Get feedback, gauge who your audience is and put it in peoples minds. You can see how viable it is and gather feedback before committing to anything too big. Maybe offer social media models samples in exchange for advertising?
barry0079··on Ask HN: What should I do when I'm bored with my career?
I'd love it if you could share some more information or materials on this. It's something I've been trying to comprehend and understand in my own way.
barry0079··on UK police release airport drone suspects, admit there may not have been drones
Not before plastering the faces of an innocent couple nationwide. I think they deserve reparation for this.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2018?
Not quite the same vein but I found Higashino Keigo's works really enjoyable.

From the information given the reason why is likely money laundering.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What will social networking look like in 2020 (bigger whatsapp, insta)?
I wonder how much of the problem is simply in the name.
barry0079··on Ask HN: How are recruiters “finding my linkedin” when I dont even have one?
You're correct. More punishable is probably more fitting.
barry0079··on Preparations companies are making for Brexit
But you would let the product owner do whatever he likes with the code. Does the Government serve the people or should the people serve the nation?
barry0079··on Ask HN: How are recruiters “finding my linkedin” when I dont even have one?
My old company did exactly this. We would remote log into out clients computers and beging scraping all of their linkedIn contacts and 'signing' them up to our service for them to use as recruiters. This still happens post GDPR.
barry0079··on The Irresistible Urge to Build Cities from Scratch
I'm a huge fan of the winding maze like structure of cities built upon the old. It's nice to be able to wander and explore. I suppose blank slate cities (like most in America) are a lot more convenient to navigate though.
barry0079··on Ask HN: How do I stop being resentful towards other devs
I wouldn't suggest going straight behind your team's back to your boss to "Tell". That seems like a quick way to get them all to resent you. I'd try a candid discussion first before this.
barry0079··on Seals Used to Protect Voting Machines Can Be Opened With a Shim from a Soda Can
I think to make the public aware of the risks an election result needs to simply be hacked in such an obvious way that it's instantly discredited.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What did you learn the hard way?
Prosit!

What about Othello?
barry0079··on Haruki Murakami Introduces the Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories
I really recommend Keigo. Malice is probably my favourite so far but only because I loved the TV series Shinzanmono.
