barbacoa··on Facebook and Instagram to temporarily allow calls for violence against Russians
It's going to be really awkward when this is all over and big tech has to pivot back to when nationalism, strong borders, private firearm ownership, and armed neo-nazi militias[0] were all bad things.

barbacoa··on Climate change is hitting the planet faster than scientists originally thought
It's balanced because both sides have agendas.
barbacoa··on Climate change is hitting the planet faster than scientists originally thought
>I'm not sure "former Chief Scientist for the BP petroleum company" is the person I would go to for "a balanced take" on climate change.

The IPCC is funded and promoted by the UN because their conclusions align with the UN's agenda. It's very hard to distinguish the legitimate environmental concerns from political and ideological ulterior motivations.

barbacoa··on EU to Ban RT and Sputnik
Same here in USA. They appear to be under a DOS attack.
barbacoa··on Twitter restricted in Russia amid conflict with Ukraine
>If Russia blocks access to twitter then shall RT be allowed to continue posting for their Western audience?

Unquestionably yes.

Why is HN becoming more and more in favor of China style restrictions on information?

barbacoa··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
>>The US and NATO could trivially cripple Russia's army in the field.

The USA has not fought an symmetric war since WW2.

Russian has some of the most advanced surface to air missile technology in the world, capable of denying NATO air power from operating effectively. Russians S400 missiles can detect and take out even F35s. A direct air assault like you saw in 1990s Iraq war would be suicide.

You would be looking at defeating 100,000+ soldiers equipped with armored vehicles and tanks with primarily ground forces. This is not the kind of scenario we want to see.

barbacoa··on Trump's Truth Social tops downloads on Apple App Store; many waitlisted
>>[T]he content creates strong objection in a larger group, then companies don’t want to be seen there.

Why would you need advertising or even make money in the traditional sense for that matter? We have seen how social media companies have entered into overt political actions to control narratives. Trump is attempting to build his own version of this. And it's still early but he's not doing a bad job so far, he's raking in tons of money from investors. These "investors" aren't looking to make money, they are investing in political influence similar to those people who were pumping billions into the Clinton foundation to buy access/influence.

barbacoa··on Facebook/Meta asks: “Wouldn't it be nice to die?”
You could have done this commercial very differently in a way that would have made it feel much less unsettling:

Garage band breaks up as members move away to start jobs/families. Band gets back together and plays in VR to large audiences.

The fact that no one at Meta recognized how deeply dystopian the commercial was, leads me to believe dystopian is part of the plan.

barbacoa··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
Smallest android smart phone I found, 83x40mm.

barbacoa··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News (2019)
Even there many of the stories have been about tech company involvement; GoFundMe, data leaks, social media bans, etc.
barbacoa··on Google Search Is Dying
As people turn to Wikipedia for information the same momentum that ruined Google is sure to follow. It's already happened to Wikipedia pages that even tangentially touch anything political. If you go on the talk pages you see a slow motion battle between good faith editors that want an encyclopedia of information with a neutral tone, vs bad faith editors that want to use Wikipedia to represent their idealogical narrative. It's even spilled over into historical pages that don't carry the "correct" judgement on the past.

barbacoa··on Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act
Another YT channel that records videos of street view of public protests or events. They don't have any narrative to push, they instead license the content to the media.

https://youtube.com/user/DCNews2Share

What ever the YouTube channel attribute flag to throttle visibility is, is probably set to max as they never get more than a few hundred views.

barbacoa··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
Not everyone can work from home on their MacBook while wearing PJs. Let's be honest, the people who are part of this protest do not represent the socio-economic interests of those who make up HN. It really boils down to elitism.

HN is mad that the working class is advocating for themselves and not busy delivering our Amazon packages and making us lattes.

barbacoa··on Newly declassified documents reveal previously secret CIA bulk collection
I know because I read that single sentence on page 6 of a NYT article. This must have been 2010, back when people bought printed newspapers. I followed civil liberties pretty close back then and it was the first I heard it discussed.

That's part of the plan. Those WaPo articles carry a different tone if it's breaking news vs following up on a already broken story.

barbacoa··on Starship Update [video]
>This is the first time I’ve ever heard him speak. Is he always this awkward?

Elon Musk did a Joe Rogan podcast where they smoked a blunt and drank whiskey. Elon went on random mumbling stoner pontifications. It was cringe. It was so bad it made Tesla stock tank.

barbacoa··on Newly declassified documents reveal previously secret CIA bulk collection
From a government standpoint it's better to control the release of this kind of information rather than a Snowden type disclosure. Reminds me of how the Obama administration CIA disclosed they had secret assassination kill-lists which included American citizens. This was done through a Friday release of a NYT page 6 article that casually mentioned this in a single sentence buried in text.
barbacoa··on You cannot police misinformation in a fair, reproducible, and representative way
I think GP was referring to Kevin Clinesmith who pleaded guilty to deliberately falsifying documents presented to FISA courts.
barbacoa··on The NYT article on MMT is bad
Before MMT was the even more obscurely known Bretton Woods System. There feels to be a very deliberate reason this topic are not covered in schools.

barbacoa··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
>Joe Rogan would interview Dr. Fauci if he were up for it.

In one of this podcasts, JR said he was trying to find someone from the "other side" to debate (I think it was) Dr Malone. He said he couldn't, everyone turned him down. I think this part of the big disconnect in modern discourse; one side wants open discussion and debate, the other wants to censor and deplatform.

barbacoa··on Alder Lake Core i9 processor is faster than the M1 Max
Intel renamed their nodes, "Intel 7nm" is what they were previously called "Intel 10nm". So the node numbers are now (semi) compatible between Intel and TSMC.
barbacoa··on Alder Lake Core i9 processor is faster than the M1 Max
>3.5%-5% increase in performance at more than double the wattage

The 100 watts mentioned in the article is the whole laptop power. Google tells[0] me the power consumption of the i9-12900HK is 45 with boosts up to 86W.

Intel's 12th gen i9 is built on 7nm, Apple's M1 max is build on 5nm. Rule of thumb, is about 30% power saving at same performance for a new node.

So assuming max performance of M1 Max is 40W and i9-12900HK is 86W, adjusted for process node we are looking at 40W vs 60W.

barbacoa··on Anti-work subreddit goes private after rough Fox News interview
Link to interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yUMIFYBMnc
barbacoa··on Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai involved in ad collusion plot
It is notable that all these anti-trust actions are coming from states attorney generals and not from the DOJ after all the anti-trust talk coming from the new Biden administration last year.
barbacoa··on YouTube removed a vid of me drinking water because “it's dangerous”. I'm done
Probably not based on size. But it is notable that this automated moderation collateral damage doesn't ever hit corporate channels such as those owned by ABC or Viacom -- even when those channels are smaller in subscribers and viewership than independent channels.
barbacoa··on Train burglaries in LA
In Austin Texas when they legalized urban camping the short term effect was the homeless shelters and transitional housing programs cleared out in favor of camping in the posh downtown parks. There was a sudden increase in young rastafarian looking white kids living on the streets. When the ban was reinstated all those newcomers just melted away to wherever they came from.

Didn't seem like that bad of a life while it lasted, being in the tourist areas crime was never bad enough to be afraid for your safety, you had bleeding heart church groups that would regularly come by the camps to hand out food and clothing. All the while you can sell and doing drugs in the open.

barbacoa··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
https://www.cjr.org/opinion/nytimes-project-veritas-defamati...
barbacoa··on YouTube removed a vid of me drinking water because “it's dangerous”. I'm done
Another history channel I follow had their videos mass de-monetized and age restricted. It was purely educational nothing about the channel is remotely controversial.

I am convinced YT is deliberately doing this to push out small content creators and replace them with corporate content creators that are fleeing the sinking ship that is cable TV.

barbacoa··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
There are multiple labs in Wuhan. Wuhan institute of virology is the main on people like to talk about but there was indeed another lab a block or two away from the wet market. I don't know if both were doing virology experiments.

barbacoa··on Fanpage: Italian website that went from gossip to award-winning scoops
In the USA fact-checkers are usually funded by dark money super PACs looking to influence politics.
barbacoa··on Fanpage: Italian website that went from gossip to award-winning scoops
>Journalists asking for censoring other journalists from YouTube? Where!?

There is a constant drumbeat from the NYT, WASPO, corporate media crowd for platforms to "do more to combat misinformation".
