balthasar··on Family Dollar to close almost 1,000 stores
Family Dollar aggressively lowered the number of employees in their stores leading to disorganized and dirty store locations. It isn't surprising that they are now closing these locations.
balthasar··on Safetyism killed playtime
"Children are far less free than they used to be. While 71% of Boomers and 80% of Gen X recall playing in the street as children, only 27% of children do today."

Freedom is being allowed to get run over in the street!

balthasar··on Steam Deck OLED
So annoying how hard they are marking up the storage upgrade. I get the pricing model where they gouge the power users to make the entry level unit cheaper. It just sucks when every product is gimped on storage just for this idiotic structure.
balthasar··on U.S. takes unprecedented steps to replenish Colorado River's Lake Powell
The alfalfa must flow.

balthasar··on New Ways to Be Told That Your Python Code Is Bad
I would write it like this. Seems fine to me

  do_a_thing(now, using, five, different, parameters
) if some_complex_condition(using, four, different, parameters
      ) else do_another_thing(having, three, parameters)

I read it as women dominated beer pong.
balthasar··on “I saw that you spun up an Ubuntu image in Azure”
I mean just the idea of spinning up linux on Mircrosoft's cloud is pretty funny in and of its self.

Less developed countries would move towards reform if exploitation regulation went into effect.

Paul "By 2005, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s” Krugman.

The peer-tube recommendation was really embarrassing.
balthasar··on The dual PhD problem of today’s startups

balthasar··on Essential Coding Theory [pdf]
Seems like a lot just to learn web coding.
balthasar··on An Inside Look at CloudKitchens
Not sure if this is mentioned but it sounds similar to another restaurant disruption that gained ground recently, I'm talking about redesigned food courts. The idea was an artisanal food courts that chefs could rent stalls in. I am sure they are still around but I know there was a lot of fuss over their exploitative practices.
balthasar··on I’ve Consed Every Pair
Maybe the most cringy thing I have read on here.
balthasar··on Learn X in Y minutes Where X=Prolog

balthasar··on Shopify: A StarCraft Inspired Business Strategy
Bit of a stretch
balthasar··on Families go deep in debt to maintain a middle-class lifestyle
With the 60% majority required in the Senate, entrenched two party system, lifetime appointment of judges, President's power of veto, I could go on forever but all the different aspects of the Constitution discourage any change to happen. It as much if not more of an issue with the American political system as it is the people who are elected. Although they are not without reproach considering the current campaign finance laws are a joke.
balthasar··on Ugly Gerry – Font created from congressional districts
Pointing out the obvious injustice and loss of adjacency imposed on voters in these districts is the obvious reason for this project but leave it to Hacker News readers to fixate on the technical aspects of redistricting while ignoring the political and social reasons which led to this issue.
balthasar··on France to tax flights from its airports, airline shares fall
I think yelp is another site.

balthasar··on I've stopped flying to conferences for climate change reasons
