bakoo··on Amiga Unix, Again
The phone is a real device produced by Jolla. After being called out on the AI generated ads, Commodore apologised and had the videos remade using real people.
bakoo··on Mac gaming is finally getting the overpowered upgrade it deserves
The high pixel response time on macbook displays means you'll want an external monitor for multiplayer shooters etc., which most gamers are already fine with, but annoying if you want to game while travelling.
bakoo··on A dock that wakes up reliably
Unplugging the monitor power for a second solves about half of the issue we're having with our Dell U22DEs, but the plugs are hard to reach so we've seriously considered tripping the relevant power breakers once a week before deciding it was too brutal.

While most users know the power trick by now, there are still those in the "not my job" and "any excuse is a good excuse" categories, and for those I might just spend a little on old fashioned power timers.

bakoo··on Bitwarden scrubs 'Always free' and 'Inclusion' values from its site
Switched recently, and was positively surprised by the flexibility of the import process.
bakoo··on How fast is a macOS VM, and how small could it be?
Maybe, but then likely only as a BYOD. A company owned enrollment setup requires linking up with Apple Business Manager.
bakoo··on NetHack 5.0.0
Wow! Wonder how they test all the releases.

> The source release includes all the code for the above versions plus code for the systems listed below.

    Windows 8.x/10/11
    Linux
    macOS
    AmigaDOS
    Windows CE
    OS/2
    Unix (*BSD, System V, Solaris, HP-UX, ...)
    BeOS
    VMS
bakoo··on "Negative" views of Broadcom driving VMware migrations, rival says
The worst part about the convoluted download process is that it seems someone have actively been making it more difficult since the first iteration, and I can't for the life of me understand why. Is it being done by someone who hates Broadcom? Or perhaps struggle with mental illness? Or is it due to a mix of micro management and extreme incompetence? I can't remember seeing something this bad since the horror shows people managed to create using stuff like Flash and Silverlight.
bakoo··on New research reveals the strongest solar event ever detected, in 12350 BC
I would love to know where you got them from!
bakoo··on Ask HN: I want to create IMDB for open source projects
Freshcode.club isn't as vast as freshmeat felt, but at least it looks the same =]
bakoo··on German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice
All Tux, no bucks?
bakoo··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
Same with my colleagues most recent top model Samsung Galaxy Watch :]
bakoo··on Use Midnight Commander like a pro (2015)
Directory Opus was great back in the day, remember the joy of binding a ton of scripts and cli and gui apps to various buttons.
bakoo··on Discontinued and unreleased Microsoft peripherals revived by licensing deal
The ergonomics were awful, so I gave up on mine.
bakoo··on Someone bought 26.9 BTC on Binance and sent it to Satoshi's dead wallet
The 26.9 now dead bitcoins could have done a lot more good had they been sent to a charity or nonprofit instead.
bakoo··on Someone bought 26.9 BTC on Binance and sent it to Satoshi's dead wallet
What a waste. The majority of people on this planet have a low enough income to be able to retire comfortably with a payout of that size.
bakoo··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Didn't know anyone with a credit card back then, and had zero software shops around, so I mostly pirated stuff. But I did pay for Thor for my early BBS, mail and Usenet days on my Amiga, later replaced with a paid for license for Forte Agent on Windows.
bakoo··on Ask HN: What is the best media for long term archival storage?
I have fewer problems reading my C64 tapes and 5,25" floppies from 1984-1987 than reading my 1994-2001 CDRs and DVDRs.
bakoo··on How to start a Go project in 2023
> There's no point in stripping a binary or even using UPX on it unless you're targeting extremely low memory environments

Deploing at a large enough scale, perhaps where other optimization options aren't as good or even available, could also be a target.

bakoo··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Late question, but how do you deal with the audio lag when using the Elgato? Got the same dongle, and an old Nikon, but never got a handle on the lag.

I don't have these pedals [1] (yet), but considering how much I'm struggling with osteoarthritis at the ripe old age of 49, I do think they might offer some relief during my longer vim stints.

bakoo··on MacUser 1996: How to Rig Up the Fastest Photoshop Machine
I remember running Mac software on my A4000-040. It was smoother than on real 68k macs, likely due to the co-processors the Amiga had. I didn't use the emulator much as I found most things just as good or better on the Amiga side of things, with an asteroid shooter, Maelstrom, as an exception - loved that game :)
bakoo··on Scientists developed simple way to cook rice that cut calories absorbed by half
I'd probably juat add the oil to the rinsed rice before dumping it into the pot.
bakoo··on Valve bans 40k Dota 2 accounts using honeypot patch
One would think that some of the 40000 dota cheaters weren't as careful and thus easier to spot.

Of course this happens when I finally have come to appreciate the finger prostate check.
bakoo··on Worst Rated Dishes in the World
As gaeng som is the favourite dish of both my wife and most of my southern thai inlaws, I've tried getting used to it about once a year for the past 16 years. Tastes better than it smells, but I still don't like it, only manage a tiny portion to be polite - and bring some fun to the table ;)

Durian, however, tasted ok from day one, and great after a couple of years.

bakoo··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Had to wade through a lot of bad advice before finding a fellow Kenji acolyte ;) That man is an excellent teacher and a great mythbuster.
bakoo··on VanillaOS: Immutable Ubuntu-Based Linux
I suspect bbarnett is joking.

Dvorak being the default layout was a problem because it was completely hidden due to the low screen resolution.

bakoo··on VanillaOS: Immutable Ubuntu-Based Linux
Just finished installing it in a VMware Workstation VM:

* The installer lags unless you temporarily disable 3D acceleration until open-vm-tools are installed

* The Norwegian keyboard layout defaults to Dvorak, which I suspect isn't the most common one ;)

* The default installer resolution was a tiny 800x600. Click Activities and type Displays to get to the relevant settings.

Now for the more exciting stuff, like testing if Tailscale works out of the box.
