b4je7d7wb··on Valve bans 40k Dota 2 accounts using honeypot patch
These cheats Valve banned for only give a small edge. Much less than the variance in skill between players. It's more like turning graphics low for better fps than an aimbot. If you don't care about being good or winning, you can just consider the cheaters to be better skilled players and be unaffected by them.

I enjoy cs go, and I can't recognize a difference with good aim and aimbot. So there is no difference with a cheater or a smurf for me.

b4je7d7wb··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
This is still very much an issue in many countries with government owned "nonprofit" media. Even in countries with low amount of corruption and high freedom of press.
b4je7d7wb··on ‘I will show you how safe Telegram is’
How can you not see how bad security practise of Telegram is not directly related to Telegram?

Do not let sms 2fa slide for anyone.

b4je7d7wb··on I've been told (many times) that “the good employees never get laid off”
Fair enough. Maybe that's the reason "good employees" get laid off. They are good from a coworkers perspective, but just not good enough for their pay. (assuming all measurements were meaningful and objective)
b4je7d7wb··on I've been told (many times) that “the good employees never get laid off”
Layoffs are to save money. Many companies will rather layoff 1 person making above market rate than 2 making below market rate. Performance is obviously a factor, but not the only one.

If you have aggressively negotiated your cash compensation very high based on high performance during an economic boom you are at a high risk of getting laid off when the economy turns around. Imagine a graph with performance and compensation as axises, anyone below some slope is a layoff candidate.

b4je7d7wb··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
It is implied by not allowing to work from home. There wouldn't be a need to work from home if it was a 9-5 job.
b4je7d7wb··on The future (and the past) of the web is server side rendering
300ms feedback on user action is unacceptable. But I read another comment saying there can be loading indicators so in that case its fine.
b4je7d7wb··on Bay 12 Games has made $7M from the Steam release of Dwarf Fortress
I think they will just keep working on df the way they have so far for another 20 years before retiring.
b4je7d7wb··on We are ‘greening’ ourselves to extinction
Oh no, not the right wing governments.
b4je7d7wb··on Japanese explained to programmers
It's so weird. I know Japanese and I know chatGPT mostly confidently wrong. But still I wanted to believe it and give it the benefit of the doubt. I was wondering if fish had another pronounciation in addition to sakana.
b4je7d7wb··on Japanese explained to programmers
He even goes on to give an example of everyday Japanese as something nobody outside of a manga would say.
b4je7d7wb··on Ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer (2022)
Do they not teach you about macronutrients in highschool?

I think nutrition is one of the earliest things you figure out that it depends and nobody really knows what their talking about. My mother and wife have a lot of opinions about nutrition that are obviously unscientific, situational and anecdotal.

> Lifetime of avoiding fat... exactly opposite of what I should have been doing...

There is more nuance involved. What kind of fat? What kind of diet? Calorie surplus? What about salt? What kind of metabolism do you have?

It is just impossible to make blanket statements like eat fat, do not eat fat, eat sugar, do not eat sugar. It's your own responsibility to figure it out instead of being told what to do.

b4je7d7wb··on What we look for in a resume
I think it depends on work culture. We recently merged with an american corporate and their engineers are obsessed with measuring, pilots, ab testing, RFCs etc. It's so slow to work with them even on the smallest features. Poor 10% of users who miss out on awesome features for 4 months because we "need" a control group.
b4je7d7wb··on Ain't it funny how the knight moves?
That's how I took it as well. Everyone talks about highlighting stuff but you don't get highlights in real games. I got more comfortable with knight manouvers and chess notation thanks to this puzzle.

It should definitely have some visual tutorial for people to understand how it works though.

b4je7d7wb··on Scaling Bevy Development
I've been making a 2d game in bevy and it's a lot of fun. I would recommend trying it. I haven't had any issues that are common with rust like fighting the borrow checker.
b4je7d7wb··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
That's perhaps a bit pendatic. Maybe vested interest would be a more accurate term, but the idea is quite clear from context.
b4je7d7wb··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
>Is this not the case in California?

I don't think it is. I've never felt so unsafe in traffic as driving on highways in california. People keep an order of magnitude too little distance to the car in front. That density of cars would make any european highway slow down to a crawl but there they just practically touch eachother while driving 60kmph while doing crazy lane shifts left and right.

b4je7d7wb··on Undo codes for Japanese elevator floor buttons
People might press their floor even if its selected And by the time they correct their mistake the elevator might start doing something else.
b4je7d7wb··on Undo codes for Japanese elevator floor buttons
I never saw anyone do this in Japan. Because you can slide out before the doors are fully open, in this case people in elevator can close the doors earlier. If you wait for them to fully open and close them yourself then its wasting time.
b4je7d7wb··on Pushup: a new compiler for making web apps in Go
You still need to press space after that.
b4je7d7wb··on Worst interview questions for software developers
"Oh wow, you must be burning through a lot of cash paying for all that overtime."

Would probably end the interview right then and there but so worth it to see their reaction.

b4je7d7wb··on Tencent WeChat is now a GitHub secret scanning partner
It's mostly because of the government. Don't take it personally. I have quite strong opinions of China, but I don't let it influence my relationships with my chinese collegues.
b4je7d7wb··on Tencent WeChat is now a GitHub secret scanning partner
I dont think you can claim an API key is your information. It is quite by definition information created by WeChat and Github is sharing only that with them a few minutes before it shares it with bad actors.
b4je7d7wb··on Science Images of 2022
I don't think it's on purpose. It's probably just because of the overengineered parallax effects.
b4je7d7wb··on Japanese Manga are being eclipsed by Korean webtoons
From my very limited experience it's just a format change.
b4je7d7wb··on Recommendations for Japan Travel
Interesting, perhaps it has been fixed. I need to try tomorrow. In August it was definitely broken for several weeks for multiple people.

I still recommend some cash. In many cases cashiers have hard time using foreign cards since there might be prompts they are not familiar with. It's sometimes slow and awkward to pay with foreign cards. But if you prefer it and stay around Tokyo you are 95% fine with a charged IC-card and a credit card.

Actually I have even noticed some places and events in Tokyo do not even accept cash.

b4je7d7wb··on Recommendations for Japan Travel
I would be careful with his advise on money. If you came to Japan in the past 3 months with no cash and a Visa card, you would be in deep shit. Visa cards are just not working here and it seems nobody cares to fix it.

Japan is very safe so it's probably fine to just bring your budget in cash. Also outside of the beaten path like he advise people to go it's still very cash heavy society.

Your taxi driver will not be happy when you pay 1200 yen trip with 10000 yen. So please keep some change with you.

b4je7d7wb··on The Twitter Files
The argument lefties like to make about free speech is that companies are free to choose who can use and what can be said on their platforms. Free speech only applies to government. Well, looks like government has been a part of it.
b4je7d7wb··on Migrating from Vue 2 to Svelte
You haven't heard of Rust?

Of course old technology exists. You could still make your frontends in Jquery if you'd like.

b4je7d7wb··on Curation and decentralization is better than millions of apps
It's apple's appstore that is being dystopian. Not being able to install free apps without providing a credit card is ridicilous. I have 0 apps from the appstore on my work laptop for this reason.
