b1r6··on The Great Brazilian Sat-Hack Crackdown (2009)
I do indeed have my license. Only a Tech but even that level gets you access to the VHF/UHF birds.

Are you saying we shouldn't expect a military satellite to have some semblance of simple authentication?

It sounds like what they built was literally a simple repeater. If that's the case, they shouldn't have a problem with this "unauthorized use," because by design, there is no such thing.

(The preceding assumes the pirate is licensed to transmit in the 1.25m band that the article noted as the uplink.)

b1r6··on The Great Brazilian Sat-Hack Crackdown (2009)
So these satellites are no more complex than the amateur radio birds which function as simple FM repeaters?! Typically they'll have an uplink in the 2m band, and maybe a downlink in 70cm band, or the other way around. How can a military satellite be so casual in it's decision to relay audio? You'd think some authentication method would have been built in. I guess not?
b1r6··on Cryptocurrency Was Their Way Out of South Korea’s Lowest Rungs
I just have to say, for your first point, it indeed does work... It's just that what it works for isn't what everyone's hyping. For buying things and supporting services that are illegal or culturally resented, it is working just fine, and has been for many years without interruption. :)

EDIT: Oh yea, and currencies inspired by BTC like XMR are making such economic activity easier and more anonymous than ever. So it's always going to satisfy this niche...

b1r6··on A record 7M Americans are 3 months behind on their car payments
A good point - a buddy uses certain commercial entities which will bid for you, for a little price of course. Apparently it's rather casual!
b1r6··on Amazon is buying Eero
Just checked out their offering, and they sell....glorified WiFi routers and range extenders?

And I've just read there's a mandatory account + sign-in for these things?

What am I missing?! Just go buy a couple consumer routers and a spool of cat5e and you're done. If you're lazy, get a powerline device to bring connectivity to the remote router.

This is goofy!

b1r6··on Rough sleeping has been almost eradicated in Helsinki
This is it. I thought the article was on the eradication of some medical sleeping issue, so I decided not to read it.
b1r6··on Ask HN: How do I stop caffeine intake without losing productivity?
Maybe we all react differently to the chemical, but "mostly in your head" is also how I'd describe it. Personally, I don't have a problem not enjoying my routine morning cup. It's preferable, but I've never had "actual" withdrawal symptoms like described above.
b1r6··on The Drunkard’s Progress: Alcohol in 19th Century America
It seems to depend on the person? I've seen some anxiety-prone friends freak out on thc, while others felt better like they never had before. It's weird!
b1r6··on I Nearly Lost All of My Data
This is brilliant! I think I'll hack something together for this soon...
b1r6··on No More ‘Fun Fun Fun on the Autobahn’ Under Proposed German Laws
Have you driven the Autobahn before? This is quite normal Delta in speeds. Everyone is generally aware and slow vehicles promptly move to the right.
b1r6··on Feds Can't Force You to Unlock Your iPhone with Finger or Face, Judge Rules
However, that's a unique case, because the authorities know the hashes of the cleartext files on his machine match the hashes of illicit media. "Foregone conclusion" so long as you believe in the mathematics behind hash collisions.
b1r6··on Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018?
This is actually hilarious, and I believe a proper relief from the hyper-reality.
b1r6··on Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018?
No but I've been using it much less in recent years. Extract the positive utility, while ignoring all the mental junk.
b1r6··on E-Cigarette Maker Juul Just Gave Its Employees an Average 1.3M Bonus
I don't understand - are you saying vaping == smoking? This equality test fails.
b1r6··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
Very wrong. Criminals travel. Leaving your front door unlocked is madness, just waiting to see who will come.
b1r6··on Controversial Australian encryption laws could pass parliament soon
What a funny statement! Thankfully, mathematics does not care about an uneducated politician's beliefs.

Sadly, they will only end up harming the privacy of normal citizens, while adept criminals shift towards truly secure schemes.

Encryption == Liberty

b1r6··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
This is exactly correct. Sure there are "clean" portions of Tumblr, but from what I can tell the real purpose is to host adult content. And there's nothing wrong with that! It's a fantastic magnet for eyes, with which to show ads. They're basically killing themselves with this.
b1r6··on High exposure to radio frequency radiation associated with cancer in male rats
That's an immense amount of RF. The cancer is likely happening because they are literally being slow-cooked.
b1r6··on Why suicide is falling around the world, and how to bring it down more
For many people, keeping their guns is straight-up worthwhile in exchange for higher suicide-by-gun numbers. This viewpoint should not be discarded through shaming.
b1r6··on Why suicide is falling around the world, and how to bring it down more
Britain sounds like a dystopia where I can't find a tool to kill myself. Remember Bender and the suicide booths? If you're going to take the guns, please provide some of those.
b1r6··on Why suicide is falling around the world, and how to bring it down more
What do we say to the people who we takes the means from? "We don't trust you with these tools?". I personally find such control very insulting. At the same time, I respect their desire if it's well thought-out.
b1r6··on Why suicide is falling around the world, and how to bring it down more
As someone who thinks suicide is an unalienable human right, I find it insulting that someone may wish to take my guns, in order to stimy any attempt I may make at committing suicide. I am certain this is a minority view.
b1r6··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
It will all work out of the box. :)
b1r6··on China blacklists millions from booking flights as 'social credit' introduced
Isn't this bad from an economic perspective? I thought the gov't wanted to encourage spending and increase the velocity of their money. This directly hinders that.
b1r6··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Thankful for encryption, as it is synonymous with liberty.
b1r6··on Italy’s olive crisis intensifies as deadly tree disease spreads
It's quite unfortunate, but the eventual solution is resistance. Plants have immune responses too? If they are all extremely similar genetically, that is the actual problem.
b1r6··on AMD Discloses Initial Zen 2 Details
I'm excited. My next build shall be AMD.
b1r6··on Stamos says the US must ‘come together to protect’ democracy from misinformation
Yes, because that's exactly what it is. They are ideas. And you disagree with them.

It's very simple - anyone can assert anything, thus each individual must take it upon themselves to be skeptical of the assertion, or blindly agree with it.

The real problem you're getting at here is that many people are dumb, and may be made to believe anything.

If these people became skeptical or were simply deleted from reality, such bots would have no value.

b1r6··on Surveillance Kills Freedom by Killing Experimentation
I'd rather have that than the UK dystopia.
b1r6··on Bisected: The Unfortunate Reason Linux 4.20 Is Running Slower
Certainly the speed of it's execution. That could be difference enough to be concerning when shifting from dev to prod.
