b1r6··on EU says new cars must include built-in speed limiters
That's just it - the limits are too low.
b1r6··on EU says new cars must include built-in speed limiters
What if we just kept the peds out of the road? Transportation is all about efficiency. If I wanted to get somewhere slower, I'd walk.
b1r6··on EU says new cars must include built-in speed limiters
The 20mph limit is too low. Transportation is for efficiency.
b1r6··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I despise these weird nationalists, but this is the final straw; I've deleted FB over this. :)
b1r6··on Photos of the Eiffel Tower at night are restricted due to copyright (2017)
If I can perceive photons bouncing off of you in public with my eyes, why can't I capture an approximate record of the arrangement of those photons in a digital format?

In the former, I'm storing it in analog form in my mind. In the latter, I'm storing it in digital form on silicon.

If you really don't want to be seen, then don't go in public?

b1r6··on Photos of the Eiffel Tower at night are restricted due to copyright (2017)
That's no less ridiculous. If it's a public object, I should always be able to take a picture of it and profit off of it. Doesn't matter if I'm a little guy or Getty Images.
b1r6··on If You Can’t Afford the Rent, It’s My Problem, Too
To aggressively build housing. But this requires local politics to cordially ignore the calls to keep the status-quo. In many places, it isn't possible. :/
b1r6··on If You Can’t Afford the Rent, It’s My Problem, Too
Rent control is bad economics. The simple progression:

1. Local political culture limits natural housing supply growth.

2. Increasing percentages of people can't afford rent due to housing supply not meeting demand.

3. Rent control is enacted for political wins.

4. Property values fall due to decreased utility in ownership.

5. New housing creation falls due to new lack of incentive.

6. End-stage dysfunction; negative feedback loop established.

6A. Lack of inflation-tracking minimum wage exacerbates.

b1r6··on New York’s Rockland County declares measles outbreak emergency
Unfortunately, anyone who points this out is automatically stamped as an "anti-semite". It is a brilliantly effective way to black-hole common discourse in the social media era.
b1r6··on FTC Seeks to Examine the Privacy Practices of U.S. Broadband Providers
I always wonder about the latency with satellite internet. A friend tried HughesNet one time. I tried to tell him, "I hope you don't care about online gaming..." Sure enough, the link had good bandwidth, but horrid latency. A TCP connection would take >2 seconds to establish.
b1r6··on Trigger warnings do not work, new study finds
My experience in college was that these simply apply a "chilling effect" to any and all discourse. I tended to stay more silent, lest I find retribution for voicing my opinions. I think that is pretty sad. But I guess for its proponents, this is the intended effect.
b1r6··on The Opioid Detection Challenge
This is a crucial point. Vendors these days (at least the good ones) properly package their goods with vapor barrier vacuum-sealed bags. Even better, some use Mylar bags which provide a nice metallic aluminum barrier.

You could hold a Mylar bag of weed up to a well-trained drug dog, and it would not trigger. (Unless commanded to falsely by the officer, of course :)

b1r6··on The Opioid Detection Challenge
I guess for me that is not clear-cut. Rapes still occur pretty often, and many/most sadly aren't reported. (Legalizing prostitution could reduce them?)

For every traffic violation that is caught, a high multiple more fly by. (Speeding, for example).

The demand for murder is so low that it's hard for me to conceptualize as a market.

b1r6··on The Opioid Detection Challenge
I will not work on this, because I see it as enabling the violation of our constitution.

You cannot solve a demand-side problem by attempting to reduce the supply.

Market economies simply raise the price, attracting increasingly-devious suppliers.

b1r6··on 4chan has been blocked in NZ “for security reasons”
Why do these people think censorship works? The more you don't want me to see it, the harder I will try to see it. I think this is pretty universal human nature. Instead let's use this as a learning opportunity.
b1r6··on ZFS on Linux 0.7.13
Definitely agree. It's easy for people to mix them up but we need to be clear.

I absolutely loooove ZoL and run it on all cluster nodes. Proxmox works beautifully with it. I really hope ZFS for Linux and the kernel can get along, because ZoL greatly enriches Linux usability in storage needs.

b1r6··on U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
I find that to be a really intriguing idea. Offering a gradient instead of platform ultimatums. Could this scale, is the question?
b1r6··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
Oh yeah, I firmly believe in "your body, take what you want". Just that I want to take what I want, not what I get hooked on from pharmaceutical solutions.
b1r6··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
For those people, these drugs are fantastic! I should have conditioned my comment to exclude those people.

EDIT: I should add, if I got diabetes and had to take insulin, I would be pissed to the point that I'd make it my sole goal in life to find a way to live without having to take insulin.

To me, it is absolutely infuriating that I can be required to take a drug just to live. I fully understand this stuff works great for people - by all means use them! For me? I'd rather get sick and fail than live with it forever.

(Yes, I'm irrational, excessively autistically stubborn, and all the other negative things you're thinking about me. :)

b1r6··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
I think the key may be to very, very slowly wean yourself off. You might have to get pretty radical, like 1mg reduction per week. (That's ~2 year taper - obviously an excessive example but these drugs are weird.)
b1r6··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
Flip that around: Why would you want to be continually reliant on a designer drug for the rest of your life just to feel normal?

To me, that defines a dystopian nightmare. I'd sooner go without than be shackled to the pharmaceutical industry.

b1r6··on Discarded smart lightbulbs reveal your WiFi passwords, stored in the clear
I thought they were ZigBee, and integration with Z-Wave controllers was through Philips' web services?

https://www.quora.com/Is-Phillips-Hue-hub-compatible-with-Z-...

But I would say in general, Z-Wave doesn't have as much of this problem. Especially if we're talking Z-Wave Plus devices, which most coming out today are. Even better if they have the S2 security!

b1r6··on How Much a Dementia Patient Needs to Know
Wow seems a little unfair of her to dump you due to the results of purely her own demands.
b1r6··on Facebook moderators in America
Certainly a good point. I'd add that when it comes to suffering, I certainly feel discontent with that happening:

In the article, the example of a stabbing video is given. I would strongly feel the need for retribution or justice for that victim. Same for all content that shows someone being hurt.

I guess what I mean is that it's wrong to try and purge all this stuff as if it just doesn't exist. This is real content, real people, being hurt in reality. I'd feel disgusting trying to censor it, not disgusted by the content.

b1r6··on Facebook moderators in America
I would never be able to to do that job.

Not because of the exposure to "bad things" like the article pushes, but because I've always felt totally fine (even bored) looking at that stuff, and I don't agree with censoring it.

It's just "meh", another day of reality on Earth; the Internet is just a mirror held up next to it.

Will we ever collectively realize this? It seems younger crowds are more normalized to this stuff because they grew up on the Internet. But add in the hypersensitivity in today's public social network sphere, and we're all freaking out over anything even potentially flammable.

b1r6··on US Cities Are Becoming More Dangerous for Cyclists and Pedestrians
The reason we "ended up with this turning right at a red light rule" is simply that it is more efficient, and transportation is by definition architected for efficiency. It's the same reason we have more flashing yellow turn lights these days, because you shouldn't be stuck sitting at a red light in a turn lane when it's extremely visually obvious that there are no obstructions preventing you from proceeding.

In the world of marine navigation, baked into many rules and courtesies, is the idea that larger vessels are to be offered right of way over small vessels. Because small vessels are both more able to perceive the current situation, and more able to avoid mishaps.

Paradoxically, pedestrians often have the right of way always, despite the car being far less maneuverable, less perceptive of it's surroundings, and far more dangerous to collide with.

This negation of the common-sense logic found in marine navigation is why our streets are always reported as "becoming more dangerous".

b1r6··on My Chromecast Ultra would not start until I began answering 8.8.8.8
This is giving me some good ideas for my homelab... Thank you!
b1r6··on I Bought a House with Solar Panels
Why would anyone do this? You should either save up and buy PV infrastructure outright, or not have it at all. Being tied to some sketchy company via contract sounds horrid. I would automatically exclude any homes with this setup from my search.
b1r6··on The Great Brazilian Sat-Hack Crackdown (2009)
Ahhh very interesting! It's so funny to think I could hit military comms just by tuning up a bit on my modded rig... Not that I will, because that's dumb. Makes sense given the age of the stuff!
b1r6··on The Great Brazilian Sat-Hack Crackdown (2009)
I now see what you're saying. I guess it's just funny that I could defeat military comms by simply leaving my mic open and bumping the dial to the right frequency...

It sounds like back in the day what I described above wasn't an issue.
