b15h0p··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
So, do you use VNC (or ssh) to access the Mac Studio at home? Or do you only access other stuff that's living in your home network?
b15h0p··on Why Apple Uses JPEG XL in the iPhone 16 and What It Means for Your Photos
To increase adoption they should not have limited this to the latest iPhone models. Why on earth can a one year old iPhone 15’s CPU not handle encoding JXL? It can encode 4K video in real time, so this should be no problem at all, right?
b15h0p··on Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging
There is a pretty usable migration tool built into Angular CLI at least for switching over to the new template syntax. Requires some manual cleanup here and there but overall it’s not painful at all.
b15h0p··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple bring continuity to the Music app?
That is true for AirPlay, but AirPlay 2 works differently: It controls playback on a device (say, a HomePod) and all devices on the network see what is playing on that device and can control playback.

Still, this does not seem to be what OOP wants.

b15h0p··on German rail operator says train disruption caused by sabotage
This Spiegel article mentions GSM-R https://www.spiegel.de/panorama/deutsche-bahn-derzeit-kein-f...
b15h0p··on I miss the programmable web (2021)
Do you have a link? I have a really hard time googling this.
b15h0p··on BrachioGraph – the cheapest, simplest possible pen-plotter
Wow, this looks so cool. Do you have a BOM or some schematics or even source code lying around? I would be interested to try something like this myself.
b15h0p··on iOS 16
Iirc iOS 16 requires at least an iPhone 8.
b15h0p··on Ask HN: Why is Google Premium not a thing?
There are ad blockers on iOS, too. They are implemented in such a way that they can not spy on you—they simply provide a „block list“ that is executed by the browser. Works pretty well in my experience.
b15h0p··on Ask HN: Why is Google Premium not a thing?
I think using an adblocker and uninstalling the YouTube app should be sufficient. The downside being that the playback quality is worse (720p max, I think).
b15h0p··on Storing State in the URL
You could put the payload into the fragment part of the url (after the '#' symbol). This part is not passed to the server and is not subject to the limitations of intermediate systems you have no control over. I assume that the payload is only needed client-side anyways.
b15h0p··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
Sounds like the worktree feature in git: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-worktree
b15h0p··on The Dreamcast Legacy
The article states that the Dreamcast "fell out of the public eye as the Nintendo 64 was released". Am I missing something here? As far as I know the N64 was released more than two years before the Dreamcast's release. The Dreamcast always felt like it belonged to the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube console generation more than the PS1/N64 generation, although it was released in between generations.

Release dates:

  * PlayStation 1: '94/'95
  * N64: '96
  * Dreamcast: '98/'99
  * PlayStation 2: 2000
  * XBox: 2001
  * GameCube: 2001
b15h0p··on What's the Future of IDEs?
IntelliJ's "Code With Me" plugin still has a long way to go but is really good already: On the "client side", it feels like working in your own IDE (sometimes, you run into "not implemented yet" spots, but for the most part it just works) with zero latency, HiDPI resolution and a color scheme of your liking. Plus, you can work independently (all participants can type at the same time), look stuff up if your pairing partner scrolls too quickly (or too slowly) and you can even share a terminal (if you want) and run tests on the "host". There is also built-in port forwarding, so that you can run a webapp in your local browser.
b15h0p··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
Do you have more information about that Liquibase issue?
b15h0p··on ‘Ten years ago this was science fiction’: the rise of weedkilling robots
Right. You probably get weeds that look identical to the crop — at least for the neural network powering the robot. Interestingly similar to research that tries to fool image recognition software, but carried out by Mother Nature.
b15h0p··on Elevator Sabbath service mode (SHO)
Pinball machines are an excellent example of this. They consist of numerous electro-mechanical components that are prone to failures due to repeatedly being hit by a heavy steel ball at high speed. If one of the component breaks, it might take a while for a service technician to get out to some remote bar. To make sure that the machine can continue to collect coins, it modifies its rule-set avoiding broken components. It will also display a little dot in one of the corners of the display to signal that it is in need of repair.
b15h0p··on I love my not-smart TV
That seems to be geared towards the UK market (the AC adaptor has a british plug and it is not available on the german Amazon store). Am I overlooking something?
b15h0p··on I love my not-smart TV
It also comes with a pretty hefty price tag.
b15h0p··on I love my not-smart TV
How about the user interface? I recently read somewhere that it is being filled with ads more and more.
b15h0p··on I love my not-smart TV
Hm, apparently it does not support Amazon Prime Video in germany.
b15h0p··on I love my not-smart TV
Can anyone recommend a decent streaming client to make a dumb TV or a Beamer "smart"? I have an ancient PS3, but it's kinda noisy and I am afraid it will stop working for Netflix, considering Sony will soon shut down the PS3 Store. Also, there is no Disney+ on the PS3.

  * AppleTV is really long in the tooth right now
  * Amazon hardware is probably slow
  * Google knows too much about me, anyways
  * Raspberry PI/Kodi is probably fiddly
(btw. I am in Germany, so not all hardware might be available here).
b15h0p··on I heat my home by mining crypto currencies
Yes they do. They usually have classic resistive heating elements for when the outside temperatures drop too low for the heatpump to be efficient.
b15h0p··on Ask HN: Google Play Music Alternative?
AFAIK Itunes Match is still around if you do not want a regular streaming service. But Apple Music also includes the same functionality.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204146

You can upload your own stuff but it is subscription based, of course. Playing should work through the Apple Music app for Android.

b15h0p··on Ask HN: How can an ecommerce business compete with Amazon?
I like this idea. I'm sick of wading through thousands of products with fake reviews when shopping for something outside my field of expertise. Amazon's own recommendation ("Amazon's choice", iirc) is just algorithmic bullshit and the ratings cannot be trusted.

Give me a shop that gives me a couple of hand-selected products for any given category and makes absolutely sure that I do not get counterfeit products. Couple that with great and personal service and I'm happy to pay a premium over Amazon.

b15h0p··on Nasty macOS flaw is bricking MacBooks: Don't install this update
I had a problem with the latest iOS update too: after installing 13.4.1 it booted to a white screen with „swipe up to upgrade“ at the bottom. Swiping up crashed the device. Every couple of minutes it would reboot and be back to the white screen.

I did a factory reset via finder and that worked. As soon as I restored the iCloud backup: back to the white screen.

I had to revert to 13.4 and could then restore the backup. Now I’m afraid to update again … I guess I’ll have to wait until 13.4.2 or 14 are released. Luckily 13.4.1 does not seem to contain security relevant fixes.

b15h0p··on Ask HN: Do you ever truly use your revision history?
An underrated feature is “blame” in the IDE. IntelliJ or Eclipse both support showing the last commit a line was changed in in the “gutter” of the code editor.

Makes it easier to figure out how old a line of code is and (if the commit messages are any good) why it was introduced or changed.

b15h0p··on Making Wrong Code Look Wrong (2005)
The checker framework (https://checkerframework.org/) can make the compiler understand about stuff like this without introducing additional types in Java.

I have never tried it myself, maybe someone with experience can chime in?

b15h0p··on Backing Up My Kindle Ebooks (2018)
If I remember correctly the process is described in the README of the DeDRM plugin that can be downloaded from GitHub: https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/blob/master/... (and I am talking about the README file inside the zip you download there).
b15h0p··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
On a tangent: Does anyone here have a good solution for self-operated music playback for kids? Suitable for age 2+?

Moving away from physical media has made selecting their own music much more abstract and difficult to manage for kids.

I am aware of the Toniebox (in germany) which operates with NFC-figurines (i guess) which are pretty expensive.
