axusgrad··on China Cyberspies Outwit U.S. Stealing Military Secrets
Ha, what I heard is that the Chinese are the only ones who get caught.
axusgrad··on Multimedia C++ library SFML 2.0 has been released
It's an easy library to get into. I was able to play around with basic OpenGL, and the program was cross-platform without needing any #ifdef statements. What's amazing to me is how Laurent basically writes it and runs the website by himself (as far as I can tell).
axusgrad··on OVH has been compromised
I think the method of compromise doesn't depend on this specific customer; it could happen to any customer of OVH.
axusgrad··on #ifihadglass I would jailbreak it and modify the software
The DMCA provisions for circumventing an access control measure. Cell phone unlocking had an exemption before, but are restricted again.
axusgrad··on Facebook buys Parse
Perhaps enjoying the use of it, and having everyone and their dog on it, are mutually exclusive? Some kind of extra variable in Metcalfe's law :P
axusgrad··on Paypal President: We're thinking about adding Bitcoin (2:50) [video]
Paypal would do very well buying and selling Bitcoins. Buying bitcoins with Paypal is a very common request, which most sellers won't do because Paypal makes it very easy to rip off the seller.
axusgrad··on BitTorrent’s Secure Dropbox Alternative Goes Public
Also, Dropbox is user friendly. I can recommend it to my family members, and they have a referral program to encourage me to do it. What does BitTorrent Sync do that rsync cannot?

On the other side of the argument, I bet BitTorrent Sync will become as friendly as Dropbox, and perhaps third-party backup services will offer what Dropbox does. At that point, rsync's only advantage would be an open-source license.

axusgrad··on Obscure C++ Features
Imagine my surprise, getting out of college and trying to use this at my job, when the compiler told me it was invalid! It wasn't obscure to me, but apparently was to the Sun Studio C++ compiler.
axusgrad··on Obscure C++ Features
calling a[5] isn't obscure, but 5[a] sure is!
axusgrad··on Google Fiber announced for Provo, Utah
Provo, Utah has about 100k population. There are about 250 US cities with at least 100k people. If Google doubles the number of cities they serve every year, and starts with the smallest cities, that's 7 more years to reach the largest cities.

Most people assume they'll stop when AT&T + Verizon start investing in land lines again, but who can say if Google will have the desired effect.

axusgrad··on How We Bootstrapped a $20K Website into a $4M/year Business
Great :) My house is kind of dirty, have any advice on how to find a good cleaner outside of the NYC area?
axusgrad··on Buyer sued for posting factual negative review on eBay
The buyer is not driving them out of business, Ebay is. Why does Ebay need to react so harshly? They should care more about the hardship they inflict on their sellers, and not blindly measure each piece of negative feedback equally.

Blaming the seller is a bit like blaming someone who calls the cops on a loud party, for bad behavior by the cops.

axusgrad··on How Kaggle Is Changing How We Work
There was a similar website, where customers posted a bounty for the cheapest travel itinerary meeting certain conditions, and anyone could submit a plan meeting those conditions, to try and win the bounty. Does anyone remember what it was called?
axusgrad··on The Payphone Project
I recall needing to insert the proper toll into the payphone before dialing a number. He's added some instructions to work around that old limitation, so you can dial the number first, then insert the coins.
axusgrad··on Poll: What is your age?
It seems that vandalizing the poll goes against the wishes of the site owner, and might be a felony under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
axusgrad··on Bitcoin falls from $266
btc-e seems to be another big one.

http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/ will show prices in the major exchanges, if it's online. I had to use the Google cache.

axusgrad··on Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed
A list is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134179.0

One that avoids the fixed currency limit is PPcoin: https://github.com/ppcoin/ppcoin/wiki/FAQ

axusgrad··on Hacking E.T. for the Atari 2600 to make it better
I saw this link on Reddit, pretty cool that he shows how a few small fixes could have averted a huge financial loss.

This was a game I played as a small child, and was able to figure out the way to the ending. Also seem to remember it was my first encounter with a software bug.

axusgrad··on Until Today, If You Were 17, It Could Have Been Illegal To Read Seventeen.com
This law seems analogous to allowing arbitrary code execution; a public website can write it's own law for anyone visiting the site, and hit them with a felony.
axusgrad··on FBI wants real-time Gmail, Dropbox spying power
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "No Fly List" doesn't come from a court, does it? That's why it's important that any kind of restriction or punishment be reviewed by and sentenced by a judge after due process. The ISP six-strikes policy comes to mind.
axusgrad··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing
You get problems when the employees cannot interpret the rules correctly, though. For example, proof of residency can be utility bill from the last 60 days, OR a DC property tax bill, and they reject a current DC property tax bill that wasn't issued in the last 60 days.
axusgrad··on Is Beijing beginning a campaign against Apple?
Maybe CCTV came up with the idea on their own, to sell a story. I wonder what the process for getting government approval is like for them? Is there a government office that takes applications for public propaganda campaigns? Do they just call Hu Jintao's cell phone?
axusgrad··on China is working with Canonical on an Ubuntu customised for Chinese users
I guess Red Flag Linux didn't work out.
axusgrad··on S. Korean Banks Fall Victim to Biggest Cyber Attack in Two Years
A great example of how fixing security weaknesses is more important than trying to outlaw their exploitation.
axusgrad··on Why my startup failed
Include 10 years free storage and charge £5,100? :)
axusgrad··on Google Reader shutting down
I've been using "RSS Feed Reader" Google plugin, which was the first thing I came across. This thread is a nice place for seeing other options.

If an API or service is really valuable, Google shutting their version down shouldn't be too bad. Other people can try to make some money offering a replacement.

axusgrad··on SimCity Burning: A Warning to Publishers on The Dangers of Always-Online DRM
Minecraft seems to be doing pretty well. EA can do whatever it wants, that doesn't mean every developer will follow in their path. Sure, lots will sell out, but more show up to take their place.
axusgrad··on The Explosion of the Ariane 5
They have to fool the sensor inputs to look like a real flight, right? They can't necessarily think of every realistic but unexpected input. Definitely worth trying, though. I'd actually be surprised if they hadn't done that with the Ariane.
axusgrad··on How an 83-year-old inventor beat the high cost of 3D printing
Contests are a great way to attract a lot of interest to neglected problems.
axusgrad··on Why was my email leaked?
There would have been unlucky guesses as well as lucky guesses. It's incredibly unlikely that the first guess was correct, and that there were no guesses before or after that.
