awinder··on Mood and cognition after low LSD doses: A placebo controlled dose-effect study
I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that it’s for the MAOIs in tobacco, which is cute and I thought about that occasionally when I was smoking. I would highly suggest that no one smoke, because if you’re getting a benefit from the MAOIs in cigarettes then you’d probably be a great candidate for any number of low-dose ssris and the rest of the pro/cons list tilts heavy con for smoking.
awinder··on Microsoft is letting employees work from home permanently
There’s 2 real world things that I think would need to happen in order for companies to go all-in:

1. Companies need success stories of that kind of ad-hoc innovation happening from within the company remotely. Otherwise someone will 100% kill it. Somewhat a function of how long until return to normalcy if that’s possible.

2. Another uncontrolled viral outbreak in the next decade changes the math on financial sustainability of the large campus and externally forces companies to go all-in.

From what I’ve seen I think companies hedge #2 happening by allowing remote in perpetuity, and it solves gnarly issues with “forcing” people back in. But at this point I don’t think #1 happens with this pandemic.

awinder··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
I would not go further than associating an October exit date as someone who took a buyout, and anyone with an exit date in the first half of 2021 as a sucker.
awinder··on Roof blows off new Tesla Model Y
“I only realized that when my SO's Dad showed me the Porsche Taycan, that I realized how much Tesla had sacrificed, in terms of customer convenience and customer service”

Can you explain this, what compared unfavorably

awinder··on I'm paying over 10k to stare at a screen and be told to “teach myself”
If you’re really that worried about it, save it in a joint taxable account. That way you’re “just” gambling away the preferential tax treatment (substantial) of 529 because you’re pretty sure you’d take the 10% penalty when it blows up. That’s much more equal bet than not saving.
awinder··on I'm paying over 10k to stare at a screen and be told to “teach myself”
That’s not a normal college expense, and in fact a lot of schools with expenses that high do so while offering means-based scholarships. So when you read a story about someone at a $60K school paying $60K, usually it’s a signal that you’re reading a story from a very wealthy individual circumstance — not to opine positive vs. negative but context is important.
awinder··on Your Response to Mistakes Defines You (2014)
“But I've come to the conclusion that humans are just fundamentally stupid”

I prefer eventually consistent but ok ;-).

This was my takeaway for a bit but I massaged it into “humans can make better decisions after mistakes”. The differentiator was the focus on getting better, because for me I think I have a proclivity to stew in the “we are all stupid; why try”. If you don’t have that problem then “we are all stupid” works too, and is true :-).

awinder··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
The cartridges are actually kinda a funny story to themselves if memory serves. Nintendo required that they manufacturer the cartridges themselves (and they had minimum orders), which was separate from the licensing side of things. Then you had disk based game systems come along early 90s which were a couple of bucks to manufacturer (on avg). I remember reading about wild deltas depending on your company size & how much you shipped on what you could expect your take to be on a title, which also makes it hard to compare.
awinder··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
The still costs $50 is interesting to me, because inflation adjusted this is a pretty steep discount. The 30% stayed the same, but inflation adjusted on something like this the revenue netted is down to what 15% would have previously got you.

All I’m really getting at is that the layers of complication are thick. I feel like one could unwind this with a lot of effort, but I doubt anyone is being utterly fleeced (or is utterly innocent, for that matter).

awinder··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
Just a reminder that actually by definition consumer harm is the bedrock standard for antitrust litigation in the US. Scale and market power may be components of an argument for consumer harm, but they are not sufficient in and of themselves.
awinder··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
This is a super literal take. In the 80s/90s the expense-incurring activity was physical cartridge production. Today it’s bandwidth & delivery infrastructure, card processing, any myriad of things.
awinder··on Default window manager switched to CTWM in NetBSD-current
I worried about whether the time investment would be worth it when I was getting into tiling window managers (using chunkwm on Mac), but it has paid dividends and was totally worth it. The thing that helped me over the hump was setting a background image with the key commands for a little while, until it felt like second nature. A couple of years in now the key commands I’m pressing seem subconscious, almost like when entering a typo and looking and down at the keyboard and becoming disoriented. It’s weird.
awinder··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
I kinda flipped through some of your other posts (stalked! sorry), I’d totally believe that this happens. It sounds like you’re working for maybe smaller outfits? I’d consider asking during early hr interviews about what the company does around pay equality, but I come with 0 experience so this might just be terrible advice. One of the better things I’ve seen is that there are orgs starting to take this seriously, and who will make big adjustments when something not right has happened. This is, I’m sure, something that has to be regionally adjusted.
awinder··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
I think we are talking about vastly different things on re-reading your post. I’m keying in, along with the parent, on offers being negotiated at figures like less than 5% on base salary (sometimes far less. talking 5-10k range)
awinder··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
The amounts of money never made any sense to me that some hiring managers will die on a hill over. In time I came to the realization that it’s very important for some people to have that “win” / upper hand in the new relationship, as like a tone setting sort of thing.
awinder··on Ask HN: What is it like to be old? What advice would you give to younger people?
The twitter & politics seem so true. This is a little goofy but I’ve gone to lengths like journaling my mood to “prove” the wisdom of this for me, but old habits yadda yadda. Do you remember any kind of “inflection point”, was it a habit you broke or a natural proclivity or “aha” moment? I’m interested in the sausage-making of how people acquire this wisdom :-).
awinder··on All the jobs I failed to get
There’s like 2 very discrete camps in recruiting in my experience, people who optimize for short vs long game basically. I’ve maintained a fantastic relationship with the best recruiter I met, and it’s definitely not like this, there’s some great people in the long game camp.
awinder··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
Assange is currently under extradition trial in London, so this is probably being mentioned to make the case that the extradition request is political in nature as opposed to actual legal interest (no personal take on validity/chances of success, that just seems like the play).

I'm not sure about the reasoning for why one would do this, but it's the same person that took a gamble to get dirt on Biden and got impeached over it, so probably shouldn't approach it from a place of pure rationality. It's terrifying that Rohrabacher was a part of this though, and really skews my personal take that nothing about this was above board.

awinder··on Stripe Employees Who Relocate to Get $20k Bonus and a Pay Cut
“the average FAANG engineer does a shockingly small amount of work that has any impact on revenue”

In stark contrast to the average pre-ipo company engineer who has rarely discussed this “revenue” business and certainly not its even more shy friend, “profit”

awinder··on Stripe Employees Who Relocate to Get $20k Bonus and a Pay Cut
The problem in my mind is that while homes are investments they’re not great investments (they’re rather illiquid, they’re not diversified, they’re multipurposed when a domicile and that makes valuation and decisions messy). They carry a lot of benefits too though, so it’s a worthwhile asset, but having to put a larger % of your wealth into that asset would be suboptimal. In my experience the delta on home prices (and then down payments) is in excess of the salary deltas but however that math breaks down individually seems like the right thing to focus on.

Oh yeah and then after that you can choose where to live for whatever reasons work for you :-)

awinder··on PEP – An open source PDF editor for Mac
I know nothing of InDesign so that's likely where my problem understanding came in :). At work, we have a lot of data-defined reports that will generate daily based on real-world conditions. These reports then go out to business users internally but they're nicely done because they'll occasionally get shared with external audiences. The way the team structured it, which I thought was fairly slick, is they built a bunch of RMarkdown reports that output to LaTex as an intermediary format. Then there's custom LaTex stuff in the pipeline that makes layouts & styling transferable and sharable between the reports. From LaTeX you can go to a number of outputs like html and pdf and it's (I'll probably catch flack for laypersons explanation) maybe a more print-oriented layout/typesetting system, versus html/css which came later. This felt maybe more relevant before than now :)
awinder··on PEP – An open source PDF editor for Mac
How would your approach differ from something like RMarkdown or similar? Still trying to nail down the differentiation.
awinder··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
You’d be surprised. From experience most people I’ve known with gambling addictions could go on the worlds longest luck streak, win all the money in the world, and then figure out a way to gamble more. The station in life thing just gets redefined and redefined because the addiction is to (imo) the chemical madhouse that goes on in your brain when you’re in the thick of it.
awinder··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
There’s precedent, but this takes precedent to its logical conclusion (the game _is_ the loot box). Usually it’s the people taking things to the logical conclusion that helps us define boundaries, rightfully so.

“It’s like living in Los Vegas”

Hmm now here is an idea. It’s not quite like living in Las Vegas because people that do that are regularly converting to physical goods for life essentials, they’re eating and getting a roof etc. Maybe these guys should build a town where you can redeem for lodging and food etc, then I’m in.

awinder··on Let employees sell their equity
Yeah this is really the way to go, when you're young you have a principal problem anyways. I think part of what is maybe appealing about larger equity offers is that you're in with no skin, and you have no skin to give so the math seems to work. FAANG (or any public company) is going to solve this problem for you with incentive stock plans and even employee stock purchase plans. If you're going to be smart you're going to need capital before you start going into illiquid and volatile investments anyways, let a big company solve that problem and enjoy youth.
awinder··on Removing email registration improved retention
Is anyone else here concerned / wondering if these numbers could be noise and loosely correlated? The leaderboard addition lead to a 22% user signup but there’s a 3-5% jump in number of sessions (games?) and it’s as a decimal position of 4. This feels like maybe there’s something more fundamentally wrong going on here...
awinder··on Palantir Moves Headquarters to Denver from Silicon Valley
On another hand, S-1 might be the last good chance to shake some of the crazy out. It’s hard to imagine that kind of needless inflammatory language in a 10-K
awinder··on SEC Charges Interactive Brokers with Repeatedly Failing to File SARs
They has 1.2B in operating income in each of 2018 & 2019, they’ll be okay ;-). This does appear to be a larger than avg settlement though.
awinder··on Apple Disabling 'Sign in with Apple' for Epic Games on September 11
“ Microsoft and Playstation also allow for cross-platform play, and crucially unlike Apple, actually provide a significant amount of services to developers for their cuts, including but not limited to QA services, SDK and hardware support from actual MS/Sony employees, and marketing spend”

I don’t understand how this is materially different from apples investments into Xcode, discoverability & promotion in the App Store/“marketing spend”, etc. Apple does tons of stuff with the big players behind closed doors, they highlight it every keynote and that’s just the ones they talk about on the “real human being” front.
