awat··on First time in 175 years, Scientific American endorses a presidential candidate
At what point does being non-partisan become less professional/respectable than being partisan?
awat··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
Absolutely, referring to schools in Utah and this is exactly it. The buyer/user/student is penalized for the lack of upfront capital and generally the business model is more aggressive because they don’t have the ability to use capital to escape it.
awat··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
I’m quite involved in the Ed tech space and unfortunately it’s an environment where a lot of times it’s more expensive to be poor.
awat··on iPhone unit sales have been declining steadily for 5 years
Interesting, probably at least partially explains the gobs of money they are throwing at content production.
awat··on How Much Should You Pay Your Engineers to Ensure They Stick Around?
Oh it definitely can be faked. But so many orgs don’t even attempt to show they’re faking it.
awat··on How Much Should You Pay Your Engineers to Ensure They Stick Around?
I don’t now that it’s specifically better to have a CEO that was an engineer. It probably is based on my experience.

What I’m referring to is that period where engineers want to stay vs being heavily comp’d to stay. You can see people throughout this thread saying pay me a large amount and I’ll stare at a wall. If you want engineers not to fully optimize comp (read as $$$$$) against the market they need to feel represented and like they have a say in day to day decisions in the company.

awat··on How Much Should You Pay Your Engineers to Ensure They Stick Around?
Not directly a compensation component but organizations can make sure they have a technical leader supporting software organizations.

Consulting with companies on productivity I can’t express how much devs not feeling like they have representation/a voice at the exec level negates comp effectiveness.

awat··on Ask HN: How to disagree with the rest of management?
To echo what lots have said in this thread this sounds like a cultural shift which is a large lift.

I’d recommend reading Heart of Change by John Kotter for ideas on approaches for change management and influencing change.

awat··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
To me this is a super underrepresented group if you can call it that. Tons and tons of mid market companies have more of these programmers than traditional CS grads.
awat··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
"Before Enlightenment chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment chop wood, carry water".
awat··on Minimalism conceals the messy realities of society
In general I can appreciate the general tenets of minimalism.

It may be just my own pessimism but it’s seems to becoming a movement that requires you to get rid of things and buy new “minimalist” items to replace them.

awat··on Is College Still Worth It? The New Calculus of Falling Returns [pdf]
Personally I feel like, one one of the variables that isn’t considered in the returns conversation is time. Lots of employers have reimbursement programs that can be used while working up even of you currently work in big retail or corporate food.

It will likely take much longer but will leave you in a more controllable financial situation in the interim.

awat··on Behind the One-Way Mirror: A Dive into the Technology of Corporate Surveillance
Excellent stuff, will happily continue to donate and would encourage others to as well.

*Not associated just an admirer of the EFFs work

awat··on A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges [pdf]
This is an important point. Also this list by it’s very nature favors schools with less overall majors and more majors of a technical nature. Not sure how useful this data really is considering the number of variables.
awat··on Wait a Minute. How Can They Afford That When I Can’t?
Yikes. That’s pretty much the reason I left the org I was referring to.
awat··on Wait a Minute. How Can They Afford That When I Can’t?
I felt this when I joined a sales org as a Sales Engineer. I felt like I was making a healthy salary but couldn’t believe the cars I was seeing driven by the reps I supported. Until one day I had a conversation about it with a few of them and found out they do everything in terms of payments. As in can I afford the payment with no concern about what that costs in interest etc. Eye opening experience.
awat··on Counterfeit books “shipped and sold by Amazon”?
If I had to take a guess this is related to books that have illegal PDF(s) in the wild. Paired with Amazon making little to no effort to verify product authenticity.

awat··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Tiny Tiny RSS - https://tt-rss.org/
awat··on Tim Cook’s Company-Wide Email on Hkmap.live Doesn’t Add Up
Agreed, not to hijack, but I fail to see the that $ORG not being at the table Vs. them constantly redefining morality for their actions to be at the table to be a less worse outcome.
awat··on College Students Just Want Normal Libraries
100% and that’s before adding all the temporary access, unique codes, platform specific access, etc rackets.
awat··on Working all night is not 'a badge of pride'
This, and not only developers I think most people or at least people of a certain persona need that alone time to process clearly.
awat··on Ask HN: What are your favorite books or essays written at least 100 years ago?
I do, I don’t know that I would categorize this at the top of what’s been listed but I still think it’s worth reading.
awat··on Ask HN: What are your favorite books or essays written at least 100 years ago?
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
awat··on M.I.T. Media Lab concealed its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
I’d have to agree to put it lightly it certainly influences my view on MIT. I won’t go as far as assuming people knew but I’d have to imagine anonymous donations with this many 0s where asked about outside of the media lab.
awat··on How four packets broke CenturyLink's network
From what I’ve read a lot of the reporting on this seems to use frame and packet interchangeably.
awat··on Setting Up a Pi Hole Made My Home Network Faster
I’ll add a link to a few blocklists when I get to my laptop. My understanding (I’m sure someone here knows more) is that the ads are served from dynamically generated urls so you can add them to url block lists based on url structure for some platforms.
awat··on Apple tells app developers to disclose or remove screen recording code
I find the user-aggressiveness of some of these techniques to be insane. I have a similar setup to you and have two pi-holes for DNS on my home network propagated to all devices include a few smart devices. On any given day roughly 45% of my home traffic (3-6 people) is blocked by pi-hole.
awat··on Business networking is overrated (2017)
This has certainly been my experience. The type of connections that seem to really fast track the acquaintances I've witnessed move quickly through career ladders, certainly weren't made at networking events. They were made at weddings, bar-mitzvahs, and dinners. In other words connections that existed with or without business networking events etc.
awat··on Six-Year homelab history in pictures
I think this is a pretty good summation. I'm fairly active at the r/homelab subreddit and this is pretty on point. Usually there is some combination of upgraded home media/routing and then on top of that a learning and experimenting section based on your specific goals.

For others though it really is a hobby in the sense of building to build.

awat··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
This is my position as well. Unless your app is going to provide substantial features over your website or operating system like functionality. I'm not even going to try it out.
