awat··on Why Is the EdTech Industry So Damn Soft?
Other forces at play Vista bought out Pluralsight using a financial vehicle that really only made sense due to low interest rates.

awat··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
I don't mean to insinuate they are like for like. I just mean Apple is starting to pick up scrutiny on interoperability which started with USB-C and I think the focus on this project is going to increase the scrutiny especially if Apple cuts it off.
awat··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Fortunately, I think this is going to be a forcing function for the RCS conversation.

Unfortunately, I'll be waiting for the data loss post coming in the near future. As some one who had to deal with a stuck iMessage validation with Apple support on a genuine iPhone a few years back this can get sticky.

awat··on Laptop Brands with GNU/Linux Preinstalled
Picked up a Starlabs StarLite a few years ago and I love it. Really one of the only 11 inch laptops left that has (fairly) decent specs and linux.
awat··on I remember feeling derisive about marketing as a young techie
Agreed, and many of them don’t know when they are lying. It’s easier to sound really confident when you don’t have the domain knowledge to know if you are telling the truth.

awat··on Apple Becomes First Company to Hit $3T Market Value
That was my first thought as well. While I don’t know their financials intimately from the outside I don’t know what they have done in comparison to Apple of yesteryear to triple the market cap. Feels ominous for the dollar.
awat··on Home Lab Hardware Guide
That was my experience as well. Home labs seem to be cyclical for a lot people including myself. Started with a big overkill rack to learn technologies, and now I’m down to a 10 inch desk rack that is ATX case size with just a few things to run my network and small VMs.
awat··on FTC rejects Facebook justification for cutting off NYU researchers as inaccurate
Another day another Facebook “inaccuracy”. A rose by any other name.
awat··on Scaleway announces measures against abusive Chia plotting and farming
I’m really not one for conspiracies so I won’t go that far but If I was a drive manufacturer this would certainly be my favorite cryptocurrency.
awat··on US marks slowest population growth since the Depression
I used to have a professor who would say all the time “there is no such place as away”. Reading this article reminded me of that. The US has made a whole bunch of policy decisions to try to push things “away”. I think we are going to see more and more outputs like this in the future.
awat··on Google and Apple attacked on app store 'monopoly'
It does when you literally can’t operate your store in another mall.

I also don’t think this analogy scales very well since many stores operate both in and out of closed shopping centers. Including Apple’s stores.

awat··on FiiO M3K review – a pocketable-high quality audio player (2018)
I totally agree. My personal philosophy has been to only buy OT devices that fail/stop being supported to being manual and not fail to being e-waste.
awat··on Coinbase valued above $100B, ahead of direct listing
I will preface with I don’t have much domain knowledge in crypto. Is there a good faith expectation that this can even go higher?
awat··on What Google recruiters look for in a technical resume
That's why I was asking. For the most part my experience and anecdotes matched up with almost everything in the article expect that piece. Just wanted to get some other opinions.
awat··on What Google recruiters look for in a technical resume
“It's also critical you list your GitHub profile or other prominent open source work that shows us you're contributing to the open source community, passionate about the work you're doing, and looking to improve your skills.”

Is this still top advice?

awat··on Stripe bans Trump campaign
Not to be reductionist but I don’t see this as a totalitarian issue. This is a free market decision. $Company decides to sever ties with another organization. That choice can be good, bad, reactive, overreactive, misguided, etc but it’s still a market participant choice.

Market remains open for other market participants to make other choices.

awat··on How to kill the university
Agree, there is a lot to unpack around universities. I definitely don’t think they are beyond criticism. That being said they are one of the only non-conditional long term organizations one can be associated with as an adult(alumni).
awat··on Over 60% of people view journalism as more dangerous than ten years ago
What is the relationship between this study and the website? This reads like organic marketing/“thought leadership” to me. Could be just me being pessimistic though.
awat··on Stressed banks: evidence from the largest-ever supervisory review [pdf]
In fair turn I would say you are assuming if enough people are “screwed” they become interested in learning instead of turning to violence or some other sort of retribution.
awat··on The Tyranny of Merit
I wonder how common this story is, my brother was accepted to Penn but our family didn’t have the money. We both ended up at large state schools getting honors degrees. The whole decision making process for us was money based not merit based.
awat··on Apple’s Cork campus celebrates 40 years of community and looks to the future
That assumes there isn’t going to be a repatriation tax holiday at some point.
awat··on Mercedes Benz infotainment soon will be able to control Bosch Smart Home devices
This is going to create some interesting attack vectors.
awat··on Apple’s User-Facing Cameras Have Been Flawed for More Than a Decade
You’ll occasionally get funny looks but it’s probably safer to just assume that pretty much anything that has sensors is or has been comprised.
awat··on What if you knew how computers work? (2015)
+1 fantastic book for the person in the right state of interest.
awat··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
Your point about PhDs is spot on. I’m increasingly seeing job postings with PhD asks for software and ent architecture roles that don’t seem to articulate the need for the PhD. Anecdotally it seems PhDs are also getting dragged into the credential race.
awat··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
It’s getting more and more difficult to justify undergrad 4-year degrees I don’t find it all that surprising that when you strip out the facilities and don’t drop tuition it’s causing this effect.

It’s essentially a luxury service in many ways without the ability to provide the luxury.

awat··on HSBC moved vast sums of dirty money after paying record laundering fine
Until risk exceeds reward to a degree where the reward is not worth the risk this will continue.
awat··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
