avree··on 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California
And back to 6.9!
avree··on Apple's service program for butterfly keyboard MacBooks, even out of warranty
I made the mistake of paying the $800+ for the bottom clamshell replacement needed to fix the keyboard one week before they announced this program.
avree··on Bird One Scooter – Pre-Order
I'm not sure if it's really too high. Boosted Boards are quite popular and sell at a $1,399 price point. Seems like an equivalent purchase.
avree··on Beyond Meat S-1
Yes, there are Beyond Burgers. Just not Impossible Burgers.
avree··on Beyond Meat S-1
FWIW, I have never seen an Impossible Burger in any Safeway (or Whole Foods) in the Bay Area. And I somehow doubt they would have just stealth launched an enormous chain without someone noticing; https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/Safeway-to-Carry-the-Pla... there are plenty of articles like this about the Beyond Burger getting into different chains.
avree··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
Taco Bell and Burger King are two of the only chains when traveling who will (reliably) vegan/halal certify. Makes sense why we're seeing this adoption from BK early.
avree··on Pinterest S-1
This is standard and required language by the SEC for each IPO prospectus for companies without a clear history of profitability.
avree··on How Discord Went Mainstream
There is no way to mute "Role Pings" on Discord currently. You can mute @here/@everyone/@your name, but if you are assigned a role and that is pinged, it goes through.

That is one of my main gripes with Discord, in addition to:

1. Uploading photos/videos through the mobile app stops if you lock your phone or background the app. No other modern app exhibits this behavior.

2. Blocking users shows a large "BLOCKED" message, with no option to truly block them.

avree··on If Lyft can't keep its drivers as contractors, it may never be profitable
Employers are mandated to give health insurance to full-time employees after they reach a certain size in the US. So no, it is "probably" not true.
avree··on Teardown: Casper’s Clever Little Nightlight

You are not crazy, it was $89 this morning when I opened the page, versus the $99 it is now.

avree··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
Where did you read that it learned "on its own"?

It was specifically trained to do that (https://blog.openai.com/more-on-dota-2/) and the devs made edits to the model to improve it (https://twitter.com/Smerity/status/897959521661759488)

avree··on Facebook's '10 Year Challenge' Is Just a Harmless Meme–Right?
You are replying to an article written by someone named "Kate O'Neill", in which they include a photograph of themselves via Twitter, and you are referring to them as "he"?
avree··on Android vendors, don’t kill my app
>Battery life consumption rarely comes up as a feature bullet-point for an app writer, because visibility on whether a given app is a battery hog is low (both for developers and users).

Both platforms offer extremely easy to access, at-a-glance views of which apps are using the most battery for any given period.

avree··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
>An App Store developer license costs $99/year, whereas a Namecheap domain is less than $10/month.

"A developer license is $99/year, but a website is less than $120/year!"

Very weird statement.

avree··on Hook on PG&E Tower Eyed as Cause of Deadly Camp Fire
Lightning strikes don't start fires "all the time". Lightning strikes account for <5% of all fires in California.
avree··on Being the editor of a newspaper in Eve Online
They sell ad space on their website to player-run groups in EVE. These groups pay ISK for the ad space, the in-game currency. [1] That ISK is paid to writers for each piece they write.

The ships they report from are cheap as chips, so not really a sourcing concern given that their reporters need to be hardcore enough EVE players to understand and write about their subject matter—and as a result, would have made enough money in the game already to afford the type of ship you need to do this.

avree··on Taking Tesla Private
Wall Street investors and analysts focus heavily on the bottom line. Elon believes that the work Tesla is doing requires more time, sustained attention, and focus than public investors have tolerance for. Furthermore, he thinks the volatility demotivates employees.

These are all completely true, and very reasonable, but do show (at least to me) that the near-term promises regarding profitability he made at the last earnings call are probably in jeopardy.

Thank you for asking for a clarification rather than just knee-jerk down voting, though. :)

avree··on Why You Should Build a Hackintosh
There is a trailing asterisk in your link, breaking the pointer.

https://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&stor... is the proper URL (for those like me who are curious, and want to see what you're talking about!)

avree··on Taking Tesla Private
Guess Elon isn't too confident about being able to deliver the earnings he promised on.
avree··on Facebook Wanted Gizmodo to Kill Investigative Tool
Several machines are capable of running macOS. http://www.osx86project.org is a project focused on doing exactly this. However, these machines do not use SMC chips. They emulate the SMC.
avree··on MoviePass couldn’t afford to pay for movie tickets on Thursday
Most American movie theaters allow outside food/drink, so long as it doesn't give off a noticeable odor and isn't alcoholic. The myth about needing to sneak in your food is just that—a myth.
avree··on Twitter Will Show Who Pays for Ads and How Much They Spend
Not necessarily. Twitter has the power to deny anyone they want from purchasing ads from them. WHOIS is not centrally controlled in the same way. Twitter could easily block "laundering" platforms from functioning simply by not allowing them to purchase advertisements.
avree··on A sad update about a scissors maker that went viral
Weird that people haven't heard of them, they were super common here on the West Coast USA when I was in school.
avree··on Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro
Having had a similar thing done, the reason for this is that Apple will not replace a single key on the keyboard once a laptop is shipped in for repair.

In some stores, techs may try to re-seat the existing key, and in very rare cases have replacement keys to utilize in-store, but usually they end up wanting to ship out for a full replacement top case.

So you are not paying for a key, you are paying for a new Apple keyboard (which sadly, will inevitably develop the same key issues as the design is not fixed.)

avree··on Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro
I had my keyboard replaced by Apple a month ago, in one of the covered models. They charged full price for an entire bottom shell replacement of my laptop. The keys were better (obviously) for the first day, but after a month of use keys are already having issues (volume key is falling off). I keep my keyboard and laptop extremely clean, so it's not a matter of trapped food particles or dust or whatever.
avree··on AT&T explains why it blocked Cloudflare DNS: It was just an accident
Anyone have a link to the thread?
avree··on Square to buy Weebly for $365M
I mean, any exit could be spun as a 'win' for the founders. Still surprising that a company that was by all reports highly profitable decided to sell for what is basically a down round.
avree··on Tech Startup Slice Helps Local Pizzerias Get Online
There's plenty of tremendous pizza in San Francisco. Hell, we even have Zante's, which makes quite unique Indian Pizza. The stuff at DNA Lounge is frankly crap compared to some of what you can get from the lesser known places.

With that said, we're still nowhere on the level of NYC.

avree··on The high modernism of social media companies
Somewhat unrelated, but it's quite aggravating to see the memo-writer (and the author of this article, by extension), using "de facto" good instead of "ipso facto" good.

If you choose to use flowery expressions, particularly Latin ones, you should at least be accurate.
