avitous··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Better yet, this needs to be the law of the land for all parties. Once someone reaches 60-65 or so, they need to step aside and serve at most in an advisory role. Let the younger crowd take the helm of leadership.
avitous··on Roku looks into serving you ads on whatever you plug into its TVs
Between this, and their binding arbitration debacle a while back, I will never use their products. Had a Roku back when they were first released (and before they became awful as a company) but haven't used it in years. No interest in giving assent to corruption and corporate overreach.
avitous··on Researchers have developed a beef-rice hybrid
"...8% more protein and 7% more fat than regular rice"

Let's see, 100g of cooked rice has 2.7g protein, 0.3g fat and 28g carbohydrate, according to USDA data. The stated increases yield 2.9g protein and 0.32g fat, not exactly a stunning increase. Referenced research is behind a paywall so I cannot discern from that how accurate this is. None of which, of course, detracts from its value as proof of concept.

avitous··on Amazon Sued over Prime Video Ads: Class-Action Suit Alleges Deception
Same here. I had an additional cable channel subscription through Prime, which I've now cancelled, as I don't wish to tolerate any advertising in my video stream, so I will simply stop watching any video on Prime. And as you pointed out, the quality of Prime video offerings has been in decline of late.

Why won't I leave Prime (yet)? Because I have an "Amazon" visa credit card, with an admittedly serious 5% permanent discount on all purchases from Amazon (as well as companies they own, such as Whole Foods.) I won't stop purchasing products through Prime just yet; am simply careful to avoid anything that looks problematic, price-gouged, or needing aftersale support, and the discount lock-in is too attractive to me to ignore for now. But video? I can always find it elsewhere. Same goes for "FreeVee" because "Free with ads" isn't free.

avitous··on Playstation removing previously purchased Discovery content
This is The Way.
avitous··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
> not an instance of disrespecting any Chase employee either on phone or in person.

Since when is this grounds for closing an account?

avitous··on Meta to charge for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe
I get that the majority, perhaps the vast majority, would prefer such a socially high touch "bulletin board" model, but... some of us run away screaming from such things. I find Discord impossible to navigate in terms of finding discussions of issues that have already occurred, and having to perform my own "archeological excavation" to discover the tidbits that are actually relevant to me is orders of magnitude harder and more irritating than, say, perusing/searching a discussion forum or similar online venue.

For those of us who came of age during the "RTFM before bothering anybody, dammit!" attitude toward supporting engineers, looking for already posted answers to a problem that likely someone else has already solved is vastly superior to bothering someone about a problem they might well be tired of talking about for the 100th time.

I've never been good at "conversation" in real life or online; some of us simply aren't and have/find our strengths elsewhere, and increasingly it seems all online discussions about, say, issues around a game published by a small indie vendor are being pushed to Discord and in some cases even shutting down other online communication channels in favor of that. A vendor who keeps its online discussion forums available and supported is always going to get a lot more interest from me than what I see younger companies doing.

Maybe it's just a big cultural shift, and I am no longer relevant. Not ready to "go away" just yet...

avitous··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
Ownership is indeed the other reason I don't do streaming. I pay for a track or album, download it, and it's mine.

I do see this capability disappearing in coming years, however; especially with growing use of "AI" tools to, say, craft ever more complicated barriers to avoiding rent-seeking.

avitous··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
I tried a couple streaming services a while back, and them rather annoying. I've discovered a lot of good new bands through Bandcamp, just reading about related bands in genres I like. The annoyances of the various streaming services just push me away, and yes, potentially to my own detriment in missing out of artists I might not discover any other way.
avitous··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
I too loved Bandcamp for its sane approach to acquiring new music; unlike "most people" I refuse to use the streaming-only services, and insist upon buying albums and listening to exactly those selections I choose (and I prefer to listen to albums in their entirety, even today).

Perhaps I'm just old and set in my ways, but choices made by others, especially algorithmically generated "options maximizing my engagement", hold no attraction for me whatsoever. Losing such freedom of choice would be painful in the extreme.

avitous··on Study: Carbon offsets aren’t doing their job, overstate impact
This right here. Either we collectively as a species take steps right away to correct course and achieve a sustainable now, or nature will do it for us; and the latter will occur cataclysmically. The former, too, except hopefully with less loss of life.
avitous··on Disney discontinues DVD and Bluray production in Australia
This. When all else fails, and this is the only way, then it is the way. I, too, am more than happy to pay $ for a high quality physical media, but if they aren't satisfied with my one time purchase, and instead choose to force me to pay for each subsequent rewatch if that is what I desire, then they will no longer get my business, and I'll find other ways to get what I want. Why should I not?
avitous··on Plants that are signs of former human settlements
If an outhouse was nearby in the past, there was a pretty big hole associated with it which may still be around. Might not be pleasant to discover by accident...
avitous··on Food companies ‘sweetened the world’ and increased the risk of disease
The point is that ideally all food processing occurs in your own kitchen. Of course the food you end up eating will be comprised of multiple ingredients; by only buying food ingredients that are in their original unprocessed form, and combining them yourself in constructing a meal, you have full control over the ingredients you are consuming.
avitous··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
Concur on this about avoidance. From my own experience at a startup years ago, the corporate counsel was pretty much hostile to any GPL libraries being used in the companies product, and was especially hostile to the AGPL, categorically refusing to support use of anything using the latter.
avitous··on Chat GPT is the birth of the real Web 3.0, and it's not going to be fun
Herbert's "Butlerian Jihad" keeps coming to mind; I wonder if something similar lies in our future.
avitous··on Companies use drip pricing to overcharge consumers
Just say no. If the added fees are known up front, take business elsewhere. If they're only revealed after the fact, I would become That Ugly Customer, and they would never get my business again. If enough do this, then behaviors will change, especially if such businesses are retaliated against. As they should be.
avitous··on Almost everything on Amazon is becoming an ad
I used to trust them a whole lot more, too. But of late it seems Amazon is leaning toward a cesspool of price gouging, and I've noticed a lot more of the presented results are "Sponsored".

Along with that, I stream movies on my TV, running clients, usually Netflix or Prime Video, on my xbox. Increasingly the Amazon prime video client wants to present me with options to "Rent or Buy" instead of free offerings (I am a Prime subscriber after all, and seek to take advantage of the free streaming offerings), sometimes a page of results will contain nothing but pay-to-play offers.

avitous··on Tech Won’t Save Us. Shrinking Consumption Will
The problem WILL be solved one way or another. Either we willingly make the changes necessary to render our existence sustainable at current population levels, or our environment will force those changes upon us in much more urgent terms, with the end result of reducing our population as necessary until our footprint is again sustainable. I have no hope that the former case will be the one pursued, human nature being what it is.
avitous··on Benjamin Button Reviews The New MacBook Pro (2016)
Beautiful machine, but with 64GB it's about a $4K machine, and that's without adding any SSD upgrade, software, AppleCare or tax. Yikes.
avitous··on Bonhoeffer on Stupidity
Erich Fromm's "Escape From Freedom", written around the same time, also touches on similar ideas centered around why and in what situations people can be steered toward totalitarianism.
avitous··on My MacBook Pro had over 10k USD in repairs
I, too, have a late 2013 MBP, and just today replaced the battery a second time due to swelling; first time was mid-2018. I also leave my MBP plugged into power all the time, and rarely use it as a laptop apart from my desk, and suspect this may be contributing to lowered battery lifetime. However, 4.5+ years on the factory installed one, and 3 years on the first replacement seemed OK, given the machine has given me no other issues at all in the 8 years I've had it. Both battery repairs were done myself using the excellent iFixit replacement kit and instructions. While I know I have to replace this MBP eventually I'd rather wait until the post-M1 availability shakes out, and I feel confident a replacement MBP won't have the issues that have plagued each years' models from 2015 onward.
avitous··on I was let go for refusing to deploy a dark pattern
This is one reason I won't purchase a subscription any longer unless they accept Paypal, which makes it ridiculously easy to terminate recurring payments to them (easier than calling my credit card company to dispute a charge). Having such a kill switch was how I was able to cancel my NYTimes subscription (another org notorious for making it impossible to cancel) without going through the same kind of hassle of dealing with a sales rep trying to keep my account.
avitous··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
I recently cancelled without any issue... by virtue of paying for it initially with Paypal, which makes it trivial to cancel the recurring payment on my end. When I called them to cancel, and they tried giving me a runaround, I interrupted to tell them I had already cancelled the payment anyway so they literally had no choice; then I hung up. No worries! I will never subscribe to anything that doesn't accept Paypal for payment, thereby giving me the last word in controlling said payment (yes, I know a credit card would allow this, only not as easily.)
avitous··on Down the ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole
I used Kinesis keyboards for years, and preferred them over all others I tried... but for the price, the build quality was just atrocious. Went through several of them. Have they improved at all? For $300+ I expect something that feels rock solid and lasts for years, not the plasticky stuff that eventually broke (out of warranty, of course).
avitous··on Cinder (YC W15) – Smart Countertop Grill
Nifty idea, but how durable will this thing be? At $500, it'd need to be able to cook several hundred meals before needing any expensive repair/replacement, else its market will likely be limited to those affluent enough to not care about the cost.
avitous··on Today I published an introductory book on Haskell Data Analysis
Easy enough to get it onto a Kindle after buying from the Packt site, but +1 to looking into getting it on Amazon's Kindle store as dealing with Packt was less than stellar.

On first visiting Packt site (thru link on your website) the paper+ebook bundle was shown as $43.99, and I sometimes spring for those if they're discounted enough, especially pre-order (as this is, or used to be anyway). On clicking through that to add to cart, it showed up as $54.99, and on going back to original page it now showed price at $54.99 also. Now the eBook showed up as $9.99 (don't recall what it was on original version of page) so I just went for that instead, as that was pretty well discounted... and it shows up as $10.00 when added to the shopping cart, not $9.99. Upon that, on completing purchase they announced a failure to deliver email to my supplied address (very rarely an issue.) hahaha not worth pinging Packt over a $.01 difference, and I suspect the earlier price changing issue might have been a sale promotion that was changing to a different price effective today (publication date?) or thereabouts, and perhaps old versions of the page were being served... but still... good thing Packt takes Paypal as that kind of thing leaves me a bit disinclined to supply them with my CC number...

Anyway, once purchased on Packt's site, they have an 'Email to Kindle' delivery option which worked within a few minutes.

Book looks very interesting, and likely a great way to dive in and learn Haskell. Looking forward to it!

avitous··on The Rise of the $8 Ice Cube
I'm fine with people putting ice in Macallan; it's when they want to add ice to a truly great single malt like Springbank or (good heavens) Port Ellen that I want to cringe.

Some years back I went to a whisky tasting event hosted by Macallan, and their "brand ambassador" was quite nonchalantly splashing Macallans from 10-18 years old over big spherical ice balls that mostly filled the glass they were placed in.

avitous··on Fujitsu harvests low-potassium lettuce grown in semiconductor plant
Often what is used to 'replace' salt is potassium chloride, which would be dangerous for those with kidney issues. I take a popular medication for high blood pressure control, lisinopril, which can interfere with potassium elimination by the kidneys so I have to be careful with it myself. I haven't needed to avoid potassium-rich foods which contain it naturally (periodic testing of potassium serum levels confirms this), but artificial supplementation with potassium chloride can be especially dangerous; V-8 vegetable juice is an excellent example: it's processed so heavily during production that nutrient are destroyed, so supplements are added, including enough potassium chloride to bring potassium levels to > 700mg in a 6 oz serving, so it's best avoided.
avitous··on Neuroon: Sleep mask for polyphasic sleep
This looks useful even to just monitor and (hopefully) improve normal sleep patterns. I've been using an Up band for sleep tracking, and it has some accuracy issues, but is still useful; a device monitoring brainwave patterns could be more accurate.

Might be fun to hack around with for other brainwave monitoring purposes, such as meditation/biofeedback.
