autophil··on Show HN: I'm bootstrapping my company and this is my first product. Thoughts?
Keep the font, and the color please. I think you're right about it.
autophil··on Show HN: Klaviyo - a new kind of CRM (not just for sales)
$49 /mnth at entry level seems a bit steep. Perhaps your CMS is more robust or more user-friendly, but I think you may be pricing yourself out of the market.
autophil··on Google+ Will Dominate Facebook - Here's Why
The G+ look and feel is way better than FB, IMO. I find FB claustrophobic and almost anxiety-inducing.
autophil··on Google+ Will Dominate Facebook - Here's Why
My daughter roped me into using G+ but now I think it's a superior experience to FB in every way. I actually enjoy using G+ (and I thought I had social media fatigue).
autophil··on Google+ Will Dominate Facebook - Here's Why
It took me a second to recall where I first heard "underpants gnome" from. But it's Slashdot of course.
autophil··on Ask HN: Disrupt Housing?
I would argue that the more you own, the more you have to lose and the more vulnerable and fearful you are.

The less you own, and the less reliant you are on others and material possessions, the more at peace and happier you will be.

autophil··on Ask HN: Disrupt Housing?
Yes, yes and YES. I think there's huge possibilities here, but the challenge isn't in designing or construction, but of re-education. Some people think owning a traditional home (and cars etc) will make them happy.

We know that's not the case. Materials possessions and keeping up with the neighbours does not make people happy. That reality needs to be more widely accepted for a true disruption in the housing market.

My .02.

autophil··on Show HN - We just built a site that saves lives
That said, it's a beautiful website and a beautiful idea. Sincerely.
autophil··on Show HN - We just built a site that saves lives
One suggestion: please get a copywriter to write your headlines and subject headings. The current "we just built a site that saves lives" is epically bad. You are leaving money on the table when you make ambiguous, poorly written copy.
autophil··on How thathigh.com solved the chicken and egg and grew to 1M views/mo with no SEO
What do you think linkbaiting on reddit etc is? That's linkbuilding too.
autophil··on Rejection
I too have missed opportunities to encourage people when they needed it. I'm more forthright now, quicker to laud others for trying, but I still wince when I think of those instances.

The post is well written and the analogy seems appropriate btw. Rejection Therapy has a post on the secret fear hacks of high divers and the golden rule is to never balk: http://rejectiontherapy.com/fear-hacks-of-world-class-high-d...

Alex never balked either. Good for him. Great blog post too.

autophil··on The Textbook Industry & Greed: My Story
No, business.
autophil··on Pineapple.io: Like reddit for design resources
I like the idea and plan to make it my home page, but there is lot of coding nerdliness that doesn't exactly fit with design.

Are you just trying to fill it out for now and as it gets busier, narrow the focus?

autophil··on The Textbook Industry & Greed: My Story
That's never been my experience. One or two books only, and I'm not even sure students were allowed to sign it out of the library.
autophil··on The Textbook Industry & Greed: My Story
Can you share a link with us? You're being too modest.
autophil··on Why Waiting Is Torture
I toggle between reaching for my smartphone and not-doing, but not doing is better. We all have inner wisdom but it's often ignored in favour of reading the latest comment or opinion on HN. We need to switch that priority around.

Where the smartphone gets in the way is when you want peace or when a situation is slightly uncomfortable but we retreat to the smartphone out of mindless habit. We use smartphones to not only connect with people but also to avoid people.

autophil··on The secret to success in the arts
But how many times did Carly practice and rehearse and sing that song in public before that happened? Dozens? Hundreds? And just to make it on the show Canadian Idol and get that exposure - was that luck? Or did it take a lot of courage and gut churning effort?

She EARNED that chance to be heard by Bieber. Luck doesn't and never does have anything to do with it. Luck doesn't exist. The word luck is just a way to discredit hard work and unseen efforts.

autophil··on Which USA do you work in?
True. I'll add that tradespeople like plumbers, electricians and dentists will always have enough work. I'll bet that on average they make more than most programmers do.
autophil··on Ecuador grants Julian Assange asylum
If his motivations were purely based on freedom and the democratization of information, and not on his own physical yearnings, he wouldn't have compromised his mission.

Unfortunately, his sexual desires superseded his common sense and that of the greater good.

autophil··on Ecuador grants Julian Assange asylum
The problem with Assange is while he is courageous, he is also morally weak. It's his utter lack of morals that has given his enemies so much ammunition.

I support Assange, although not without reservation, and I refuse to speak out for him in public because of his rape charges (charges which have not been proven).

I doubt he will successfully flee the UK.

To paraphrase the old Radiohead song, Assange, "you did it to yourself".

autophil··on Twitter live feed of Assange getting arrested
Awesome link. Thanks!
autophil··on How anti-competitive lawsuits by incumbents are killing early stage startups
The only thing I got out of this rather lightweight article was "Business models shouldn't be copyrightable or patentable -- yet today's lawsuit seems to indicate that some entrepreneurs believe they are"

This insinuates Fab.com is suing because Touch of Modern has a similar business model.

However, I now sense this is deflecting the real truth, which is that more than just a business model and the use of Helvetica is being copied.

autophil··on How anti-competitive lawsuits by incumbents are killing early stage startups
Exact same elements? Are 90% of these elements all arranged in the same way as the example shown? Absolutely not.

I read the article and felt empathy for a Touch of Modern, but then I see that example and think the article is dishonest.

autophil··on Marissa Mayer has doubled Flickr's team size in the past week
I slammed on the back button when I found out it was Facebook (can't stand the site) but on your second point, I totally agree. Flickr is such an awesome site. I'm happy to see Marrissa has good taste :)
autophil··on Why Do 26 Million Checked Bags Go Missing Every Year?
And the fact pilots (in the U.S. anyway) make only slightly more money than a McDonalds employee.
autophil··on Google’s Self-Driving Cars Are Going to Change Everything
Everybody wins? No, the Earth loses, and then we lose. It's happening faster than you think.
autophil··on Google’s Self-Driving Cars Are Going to Change Everything
Self driving cars is such a dumb, short-sighted idea. We don't need more cars on the road, and we don't need more roads either. It's not sustainable.

Let's think beyond cars and envision better ways of living that don't punish the Earth and the atmosphere.

The emperor is in the buck on this one.

autophil··on Show HN: SendRail - The easiest way to send files from the desktop
Facebook? Um, no.
autophil··on Kim Dotcom - Megabox, disruptive new music service
Even if what you say is true, heroes aren't perfect. They are controversial and complex people, just as we all are.

I look forward to checking out his new music service, and hope he prevails over his legal troubles.

autophil··on Attack of the Acqui-hires
It would seem buying up talent is like buying up land. There is only so much of either to go around, and the price is just going to get higher and higher.
