autophil··on Airbnb Is Raising A Big Third Round, Aiming For A Valuation North Of $2B
Hey, money is more important than ethics or morals to some people. You got a problem with that?
autophil··on Ask HN: Do you trust Facebook after lying?
No. I don't trust Facebook, but then again, I haven't trusted Facebook in a long time (which is why I deleted my account).

Except that my account isn't deleted even when Facebook said they would after 14 days. That's just one example.

But the reason why the very liberty of citizens of the United States is under threat is because people aren't willing to stand up to what is right if it's inconvenient for them. They will instead rationalize and look for more proof and stick their heads in the sand.

HN is chock full of these people.

autophil··on Turn your 404s into lost children alerts
Your answer makes me want to quit HN forever and move to the planet Mars where humans don't live.
autophil··on Turn your 404s into lost children alerts
If even ONE SINGLE CHILD is found and returned back into the loving arms of a parent due to a repurposed 404 page, the initiative is a great success.

Don't you think?

autophil··on LinkedIn, Thanks For The Product Validation
Zerply is pretty cool. It needs more templates though (even premium ones). Why is it so slow to release more?

Again, I really like Zerply and highly recommend it for creatives.

autophil··on Meeting A Troll
I'm very sorry you went through that. I actually couldn't finish reading it - too unsettling. I hope you and yours are okay and this is behind you.
autophil··on Thank you Apple
The "Thank you Apple" title sounds like a gushing fanboi love letter. I almost didn't read the post (which is quite good, glad I did).

I just think the title should be a little more clear (like add a "not" at the end).

autophil··on The Lost Chapter
A tree won't BS you like some people, and it won't change it's story a year from now.

So yeah, you pretty much got it.

autophil··on The Lost Chapter
Only in places like Hacker News is there a consensus opinion that Facebook is "a new addictive and time wasting form of entertainment who's contribution society is null or negative"

You either know that statement is untrue but lie anyway, or you haven't been outside and seen a tree in real life for over a year. Many people of all walks of life think Facebook is an "addictive and time wasting form of entertainment who's contribution society is negative."

If you honestly believe otherwise, you need to push away from the computer desk and interact with normal human beings in the flesh STAT.

autophil··on Show HN: Lookmark, read what your friends are reading (for Chrome)
Compliments on the domain name Lookmark. Clever. Did you have to buy if from someone, or was it available to register?
autophil··on Is Facebook dying?
Is Facebook dying? Yes, because lately, everyone has been asking "is Facebook dying?". It's a self-fulfilling prophesy.

However, I also say yes because many people I know have abandoned their accounts or use their accounts reluctantly nowadays.

So yes, Facebook will continue to bleed users and die.

autophil··on Ask HN: Help, I'm a developer who can't pay rent
Don't feel bad bro. It's tough out there. We all end up short at one time or another. Chin up.
autophil··on Ask HN: Self-employed - How do you keep a normal schedule?
Identify quickly what your productive hours are and what aren't. For example, I can't seem to hunker down and get sufficiently focused until after lunch. I tried battling it but to no avail.

Now, I do other stuff (laundry, errands, physical work) in the morning and start on the computer at noon. Works much better.

Sleep? For me, some weeks I'll live on 4 hours a night, but then I get super depressed and will jack up the sleep to 6 or more. I need to improve on this, so I'm probably not one to take advice from.

autophil··on Everything is Incredible: Let's help "The Helicopter Man"
"spent 50 years building a surprisingly advanced helicopter out of re-bar, bicycle parts and wood."

Quite the MVP. I hope this happens for him.

autophil··on Corruption in Wikiland? Paid PR scandal erupts at Wikipedia
Thanks for placing the edit note at the beginning of your comment. It's impressive discussion forum etiquette and very thoughtful, since it saves readers like me time. Cheers.
autophil··on Slashdot and SourceForge sold to Dice Holdings
Yeah, but /. was the shiz for a long time. I joined in 1998 and it dominated my online social life for about 5 years.

The day of 9/11, the release of Linux kernel 2.4, and when my story submission got published were all memorable events for me there.

Probably a big reason I'm divorced now.

autophil··on Ramit Sethi and Patrick McKenzie on Getting Your First Consulting Client
Not to be a wet blanket, but I recently increased my hourly rate by $50 and I didn't need to read a book. I just decided to bump up my rates. And I did.

If you provide value, and you're good at what you do, why not ask? If it's because you can't handle being told no once in awhile, maybe Rejection Therapy[1] is the best way to go. The game can be applied to all aspects of life, not just getting higher hourly rates.

autophil··on Vic Gundotra reports Google+ passing 100,000,000 monthly active users
I'm one of those rare weirdos that actually likes and uses G+. It was my daughter that got me to join but it's a way better experience than FB, and I've been using it everyday since.
autophil··on Everything's broken and nobody's upset
I'm talking about the BIG things: our planet and ecosystem, clean water, liberty and human rights, they are all becoming irrepairably broken.
autophil··on Everything's broken and nobody's upset
The big lie is we as humans have it all together. That we are the superior species on the planet and we can do what the hell we want.

Global warming, destruction of nature, loss of liberty because governments we elect betray us - don't worry, somebody else will fix that, probably some Y Combinator startup. No wait, driverless cars are the answer.

Us humans hallucinate in our own private world more than we interface with the actual world. We can and will rationalize anything. Nobody is upset because we aren't really there, or even here. We are off somewhere else, thinking we are smarter than we are and that everything will be okay.

With the terrifying state the planet is in, we should all be upset.

autophil··on Ask HN: Some ideas to make 20,000$ in a year without a degree?
It varies. Check your competition.
autophil··on Ask HN: What are some good free CRM tools?
Salesforce? Stay. Away.
autophil··on Ask HN: Some ideas to make 20,000$ in a year without a degree?
Be a due process server and deliver court documents to respondents. Everyone is suing or getting divorced nowadays, so the demand is there.

Heck, you don't even need a car. I started the business in an afternoon and made deliveries on my bike. Other deliveries I had someone else do (gave him half - I did nothing but take the order and pass it off to him).

Get a simple three page website and some business cards made up and you will make your 20G.

One bit of advice: Get paid in advance, every time. Even if it's a legal firm. ESPECIALLY if it's a legal firm.

autophil··on Elon Musk: "I would like to die on Mars"
I would like to die on Mars. Oh brother.

How come "shut up and just do it" applies to everyone but Elon? Why does he only have to talk about doing something to be hailed a hero?

Start backing some of this stuff up with action Elon.

autophil··on My Life as a TaskRabbit
Most people want a logo designed for thirty to fifty dollars. Some people want ebooks created from word documents under a for hundred dollars.

I would expect those prices too if I went through TaskRabbit. I wouldn't expect the designer to be a top professional. I'd be looking for a deal.

My advice (and I've been working freelance for about 7 years) is to brand yourself as a top shelf designer and never offer your services on outsourcing websites. Go hyper niche instead in a category where you have some contacts and can get work fast.

If your designs are amazing, word gets around. Pretty much all new business I get is from word of mouth.

One look at it and I thought: whoopity-doo-dah-day

Nothing to see here.

autophil··on Milwaukee Police News
I like it. The site has a Hill Street Blues quality to it, but tougher and darker. That's okay. The cops need to look tough because they are tough.

I think the more communication the better. Is it propoganda? Maybe, but I wouldn't work my brain into a lather about that.

Overall, I'd say it's cool. If my town had a site like this I'd read it.

Huh? "The Art of Ass-Kicking" is a righteous name. I think your opinion regarding this is an outlier.

In fact, your strong reaction to it proves it's a potent name.
