austinhutch··on Show HN: Strength News – An HN-inspired website for sport and gym enthusiasts
HN: Modern web development is defined by javascript frameworks, server side rendering is dead.

Also HN: Your site uses javascript? Unacceptable.

austinhutch··on Airtable raises $100M at a $1.1B valuation
A month or so back I tried experimenting with Airtable based on glowing reviews on HN and elsewhere. I really hated the on-boarding process which forced me into a template (contact list, schedule, todo) when I just wanted the equivalent of a blank google sheet. The concept of structured data collection in a user interface that anyone can ramp up on is very compelling but I didn't even pass go.
austinhutch··on Show HN: I Write In-Depth Wordpress Plugin Reviews
If you're anything like me this may have been inspired by some plugins you absolutely hate. My advice would be to get a couple of 1 star reviews up, knowing which to avoid is maybe more powerful than the plugins to install! Keep up the good work :)
austinhutch··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
There may be no company I trust less to be open and honest about this than Uber. The arms race between companies will likely keep the most important lessons from this event proprietary. I'm very much not looking forward to hearing execs answer for this as I'm sure it will have the same amount of humanity as the rest of their comms.
austinhutch··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
They ran a poor test and / or the internal politics were always going to prove out a certain result. There is value to qualitative research and I doubt the answer was to do a better job of A/B testing.
austinhutch··on A/B test of banner ads vs. traffic
These kinds of stories don't get made into blog posts because they don't help sell any kind of narrative. Novice eCommerce store owners will focus on the "top 10 things you can do to increase conversion" from blogs like the one mentioned above.

At a large scale page load time would have a discernible impact on your bottom line, but for most it is a premature optimization (as long as you aren't trying to deliver 10mb webpages).

austinhutch··on The Booming Japanese Rent-A-Friend Business
This book is very much aligned with the topic presented in the article if you want to examine how similar services are springing up in the west https://www.amazon.com/Outsourced-Self-Happens-Others-Lives/...
austinhutch··on Facebook denies 'listening' to conversations
I was skeptical until I experienced an ad in my feed which in my estimation could only attribute to data captured by a conversation had hours earlier. Of course there is the possibility of coincidence but I find it hard to believe.

I took advantage of the option to see why I was shown the ad, and was told demographic information, as well as a data partnership with DLX. I would like to know if others who see and ad they suspect was displayed due to microphone captured data have this DLX data supplier source in common.

austinhutch··on A million-dollar engineering problem
When you say "trust symbol" do you mean the "verisign" logos and similar? If so - do you have real data to prove these make a difference in conversion rate? I have clients that come to me parroting the same tips and I imagine they are all reading the same nearly identical blog posts out there making this claim.
austinhutch··on White House Bars NYT, CNN, and Politico from Briefing
But did you see his inauguration crowds? How about those millions bussed into New Hampshire to illegally vote?
austinhutch··on Facebook Doesn’t Tell Users Everything It Really Knows About Them
lmao the mental olympics needed to arrive at the conclusion "data collection to improve advertising efficiency" is noble.
austinhutch··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
His personal website isn't a business looking for an exit... weird comment
austinhutch··on Shopify’s Frenzy – Sell to the most loyal customers in a new way
This is the same issue I have run into with my clients most frequently. It seems like they are not interested in fixing this issue sadly.
austinhutch··on SimpleCitizen (YC S16) Is TurboTax for Immigration
I created something similar for a less demanding government form and comparing it to TurboTax is by far the easiest way to help people understand the value behind what the tool does.
austinhutch··on TSA gave my MacBook Pro to another passenger at LAX, and now it's gone
I made a TurboTax like website to help make a claim against the TSA in this situation: http://TSAClaim.com, it will render a completed SF-95 form that you email to the TSA.
austinhutch··on Tell HN: Apply HN apology and revision
I was extremely disappointed reading the thread yesterday and the overall handling of the situation on the side of YC. This apology and outcome is about as good they come though.
austinhutch··on He Always Had a Dark Side
I thought this was happening to me on another site, but it turned out I had developer tools on (disabling cache). Might be what you're seeing.
austinhutch··on Show HN: Podcat – Imdb for podcasts
The people search is something I've wanted for a while now, you've done a fantastic job in executing it!
austinhutch··on How Web Scraping Is Revealing Lobbying and Corruption in Peru
After Kimono got shut down, I think a self-hosted open source version would be extremely popular. I want to build my own solution, but the API functionality and pagination / AJAX loaded data would be too difficult.
austinhutch··on Show HN: Submit a Claim to the TSA
Hi HN, here's the accompanying blog post that talks about the project: https://medium.com/@austinhutchison/citizen-experience-sf-95...

The experience filing a claim with the TSA is painful, I've tried to make it less so. Hope to get some great feedback.

austinhutch··on Ask HN: Too many ideas. How do you decide what to work on next?
For execution time, a higher score would mean a shorter timeline (the task list is a 10)
austinhutch··on Building a Startup in 45 Minutes per Day While Deployed in Iraq
Lean Domain Search is a fantastic site and is my go to for generating ideas for domain names. Thanks for your service and for building a great site!
austinhutch··on Palantir acquires Kimono
I loved Kimono! It had the best interface and most flexibility for this type of service. A bittersweet congratulations to the team.
austinhutch··on Ask HN: How do you like your smartwatch?
I won a free Apple Watch, and wore it for a while but decided to switch back to the Fitbit Charge HR after two months. The most valuable features to me are its consistent heart rate tracking and long battery life. I don't miss any of the features of the Apple Watch, other than maybe the ability to control Spotify from my wrist.
austinhutch··on Show HN: PeerGym – A Health Club Database Made with Elixir/Phoenix
Why complain at all?
austinhutch··on A domain move disaster
Your contribution to this thread was to mock the author's efforts and then to make some claim about what "basic" SEO knowledge is. HN is a place where experts, apparently like yourself, come to share their expertise. I hope you'll consider that in your future comments.
austinhutch··on My Internship Experiences at Pixar, Google, and Two Sigma
This is a cool post, but I hope it doesn't get him blackballed by any of the mentioned companies.
austinhutch··on Let Snowden Come Home
If he were to come back to the USA and then subsequently be detained, I would join the hopefully overwhelming protests in favor of his release. I am hoping if such a time comes, that there will be a historic level of demonstration advocating for his freedom.
austinhutch··on Ask HN: Can we detect the NSA's pause collecting data?
Aren't the collection programs that are related to the pause concerned with phone records?
