austhrow743··on Cloudflare automatically fixes Polyfill.io for free sites
I believe that’s what pushed them over the edge on booting stormfront.

Probably a good idea to not claim affiliation with cloudflare without permission.

austhrow743··on ChatGPT is biased against resumes with credentials that imply a disability
If there’s an alternative where being liked is an option then being rejected is often better than being disliked and tolerated.
austhrow743··on US Olympic and other teams will bring their own AC units to Paris
You’re talking about an event where thousands of people are being flown around so they can do the activity they do every day but in a different location.

Of course no one involved cares about environmental impact.

austhrow743··on Engineer's solar panels are breaking efficiency records
Do you throw out things you already own when you see that an alternative has become cheaper than what you paid?
austhrow743··on US proposes banning medical debt from credit reports
This would make sense as the answer if there were sky high prices for time sensitive things but much lower for things that don't need to be done right now.

My impression of US health care is everything involving a hospital being expensive.

austhrow743··on OpenAI Welcomes Sarah Friar (CFO) and Kevin Weil (CPO)
Aren’t those things the point of the app?
austhrow743··on OpenAI Welcomes Sarah Friar (CFO) and Kevin Weil (CPO)
If your complaint is that she was a fine CFO but a terrible CEO then i can hardly see her going back to a CFO role as failing upwards.
austhrow743··on Remember When You Named Your Girlfriend as a Beneficiary? He Didn't Either
People updating their wills is the good alternative they're advocating.
austhrow743··on Google avoids jury trial by sending $2.3M check to US Government
Yes
austhrow743··on Google avoids jury trial by sending $2.3M check to US Government
As an individual sure. As a collective that constantly hires, you want your outward espoused values to be as close to your actual ones as you can get them without causing huge negative PR.
austhrow743··on Ask HN: Anyone left their job because of RTO?
You just file in the country you were hired in and illegally work on tourism visas in the others.
austhrow743··on I got tired of hearing that YC fired Sam, so here's what actually happened
It’s bad and unreasonable to link to deep web content on a different site.
austhrow743··on What the damaged Svalbard cable looked like
That's a good reason to think it wasn't Ukraine not that it was.

They're in open war with Russia, are openly attacking their resource infrastructure, and are frequently posting excellent high quality footage of it.

Taking out the gas pipeline and then not using the attack for propaganda doesn't fit either their situation or their actions.

austhrow743··on What the damaged Svalbard cable looked like
They weren't at the time.
austhrow743··on We're ending our Samsung collaboration
I would think for most people the goal is some combination of spending less money on gadgets and less environmental impact from gadgets, with repairability just being a means to that end. In which case I would think the commenters proposed suggestion is more direct not less.
austhrow743··on Nvidia announces financial results for first quarter fiscal 2025
How did you know the $250 price didn't already account for the fact that Nvidia has at least a years worth of back orders to fill?
austhrow743··on A forged Apple employee badge
Apple was a far smaller, less significant company in 2001. Much less chance that someone would go to the effort to make a fake employee 10 badge back then.
austhrow743··on Jan Leike Resigns from OpenAI
Transfer payments, rent, dividends would provide income. People would then use it to buy things just like they do now.
austhrow743··on A Better Boarding Method Airlines Won't Use (2019)
If you're one of the last on board they sometimes try to take your bag away from you.
austhrow743··on Burn After Wearing
Local reuse non profit sounds like a rich yuppie thing. Us poors use Facebook marketplace to get our used appliances.
austhrow743··on Creatine found to improve cognitive performance during sleep deprivation
It's impossible for doctors and nurses to pass on everything they know about a patient during shift changes, which can be seen in the form of spikes in deaths and other bad outcomes right after care is handed over to a new team. Hence why they tend to do longer shifts.

That effect is eventually balanced out by exhaustion, sleep deprivation, etc taking the same toll they do on everyone. Theoretically If you could reduce the impact of sleep deprivation, we could push shift lengths further, reduce the amount of turnover in carers a patient sees even more, and receive even further benefits in health outcomes.

austhrow743··on The emotional trial of clinical trials: like online dating with death risk
>If true, this is so, so, so irresponsible. Tell people that you don't know the answer! The control could easily be better than the drug! Don't give them false hope!

I don't think what you want is compatible with early stage trials.

Them not knowing the answer is well established before any conversation takes place. It's the whole point. OP isn't looking at trials that are close to being approved. They're hunting around for anything that might do anything. The super experimental stuff.

austhrow743··on Rents Are the Fed's 'Biggest Stumbling Block' in Taming US Inflation
People generally vote for things that benefit them.

People who have a large portion of their wealth in housing, and even more so those who have used debt to take an extremely leveraged position on housing, benefit from increases in housing prices and lose out on decreases.

Having a significant amount of voters be in the above position is to make effective government action to reduce housing prices impossible.

So with that in mind, if institutional investors are disincentivised from investing in housing, which group is supposed to take their place?

austhrow743··on Microsoft offered FFmpeg small one-time payment instead of support contract
The tweet is ffmpeg saying they offered Microsoft a support contract. I'm not sure you could have a better source contradicting that. Still a nothing burger tweet.
austhrow743··on Grok
The more disregard a company has for intellectual property rights, the more data they can use.

Google had far more to lose from a "copyright? lol" approach than OpenAI did.

austhrow743··on Age of Empires 2 gets another expansion 25 years later
And they listed the number of expansions.
austhrow743··on Utility classes aren't the same as inline styles (2021)
