austhrow743··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Wrong person. Im just correcting the other commenters trade off problem. I don’t have a stance on if ai will lead to the destruction of humanity, only that if it does then any one ai company can’t change that by not making new ai advancements themselves.
austhrow743··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
If you flip the switch then the trolley still proceeds and there’s still a 50% chance every human on the planet gets run over. You’re just not the one at the wheel.
austhrow743··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
PNG is in the commonwealth. It was also part of Australia for a bit.

austhrow743··on What will our economic future look like?
Use technological gains to reduce costs while maintaining results hasn't been the historical rule for healthcare so I think you should say what makes this technological gain unique.

Twitter doesn't show an author's follow on tweets to an initial tweet when the viewer is not logged in, and people frequently post their twitter thoughts in chains of tweets rather than in the one post. Historically people would therefore post links to sites like xcancel that showed the full content instead, but it appears to be dead.

So reading the linked post, I have no idea if that's the whole thing or if that's just the introductory statement to a larger idea.

austhrow743··on Reverse engineering my ADHD test
As an ADHD person who was already planning to ask my psychiatrist if we can try different medication at my next appointment, thank you very much! That description sounds exactly like what I want to achieve.
austhrow743··on Notes on Private Trackers
I've never sat down and read how seeding/bonus point/etc rules work at MAM, never uploaded my own content, or otherwise tried to optimise anything. I open the site, download what I want, close it, and every so often when I'm running out of hard drive space I clear out everything super old.

I still have 569 freeleech tokens and bonus points are always capped at 99999. It's a very easy site to maintain ratio (mine is 13) on.

austhrow743··on Thoughts on Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas
Not exclusively but predominantly. Which makes me doubtful that the Catholic Church moved the numbers much on the HIV pandemic. Assuming of course that they weren't against condom use between men, which I'm not sure if they had or have a stance on.
austhrow743··on Thoughts on Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas
Is the Catholic Church against condoms being used for gay sex? It's my understanding that they're only against them because they're against purely recreational sex. If the sex can't result in a child anyway then I dont think they're going to treat it as a double sin.
austhrow743··on Building my own network stack

austhrow743··on My Friend Aaron
Right, and if someone doesn't have the loser's mindset then reading "it's hard to beat the odds, don't try" wont deter them. So there's no loss there. It might deter someone with the loser's mindset though, and given that they weren't going to make it anyway if you knock them off track early then that's a benefit.

austhrow743··on Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco
The primary activity is sitting and holding my partner. I can and do happily do that without secondary entertainment, but it doesn't take any concentration so why not add a show in to the mix.

austhrow743··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
I read the whole thing twice because I was fairly sure I missed something the first go around and still missed that second quote. My reading comprehension is atrocious. Thanks and sorry dartharva.
austhrow743··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
I think you linked to the wrong document, unless you're taking "Epstein had over ten thousand pornographic videos and images" as "there were over one thousand minor victims" which doesn't follow as a logical conclusion.
austhrow743··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
Most deaths doesn't necessarily mean most deaths that people care about.

austhrow743··on SpaceX S-1
Does xAI have some sort of edge over Anthropic when it comes to buying future compute?

If not, this just seems like grok not being as successful as they would have liked and then finding some other use for the compute they had bought for it while at the same time Anthropic can’t keep up with demand for claude.

austhrow743··on Trademark violation: Fake Notepad++ for Mac
I don’t think they are trying to masquerade as the author so much as imply a positive association or endorsement.
austhrow743··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
>keeping the overall network fresh and relevant

What does this mean? Like in practical feature terms and benefit to the end user?

Your system kills the social networks ability to act as someone's modern day rolodex of contact information of previous acquaintances. What do they get in exchange for that?

austhrow743··on Traders placed over $1B in perfectly timed bets on the Iran war
What do you mean "it's already news"? As in it's already happened?

I don't understand why insider trading would only happen as something becomes news. The inside knowledge haver is risking the information leaking some other way before they make their bet. Some very risk averse insider traders (lol?) may do so, but others are going to make their bets when they learn their information.

Assuming that they don't though, and every insider trader only ever makes their bets right before an event, I don't see how that changes anything? People working with non-insider knowledge are still going to be betting against each other before that point. They are still going to establish a likelihood of a thing happening that's more accurate than I would by myself.

The potential for scamming is high at low dollar figures sure. At some point of volume though, it's going to become too expensive to do.
