aurizon··on Audible unveils plans to use AI narration for audiobooks
Loads of this sort on youtube stories. It has many flaws in pace and emphasis as well as run togethers of 2 sentences. IDK if a missed full stop = period in USA created the run together. That said it is easily seen. One hopes correct spelling. Best would be a scripting person runs through it first - he said/she said step? Maybe an AI scripter = first run to reduce the AI stumbles. Audible is well aware of this aspect and I would expect a good product. There are a number of online narrators that 'read' asci = OK for a book while you workout/run - but has the same problems
aurizon··on The Boring Company Achieves "Holy Grail" Zero-People-in-Tunnel Continuous Mining
I wonder how this would work in hard rock mining? Hard rock, AKA 'competent rock' is often encountered in mineral extraction. A deposit is often deep in the ground - so an 'open pit', AKA 'open cast' mine would need a huge pit - 500-1000 or more to be opened to reach the ore. Currently this is done by drill/blast methods to create a ramp large enough for a mine truck(battery powered) is driven to the face of the deposit where the ore is drilled and blasted into moveable fragments (AKA 'muck') which is then moved to the surface by these trucks. The ones shown here state they are small in size - what is the largest? Can it work in competent rock - granites etc? Can 4 - 36 inch small tunnels be driven within a ~~ a foot of each other and then caved to a squarish cross section that can be squared? It is an interesting idea. The Las Vegas underground rock is very fragile compared to the competent rock encountered in mineral exploration at depth = might not work well in the hard rock. These deep rocks are often well below the water table = high pressure water that is must operate within or pump out = hard if fractured?

Ned Ludd heirs at last win - High Court rules the spinning Jenny IS ILLEGAL!. All machine made cloth and machines must be destroyed. This is the end of the road for all mechanical ways to make cloth. Get naked, boys 'n girls = this will be fun!

Yes, Blackberry was run by dinosaurs - they had a chance and wasted it = Apple ecosystem absorbed all, save for google/Android who stayed free
aurizon··on Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College
Reminds me of when a fellow student asked me why I did so well on tests? I said I take AI Smart pills. His eyes bulged and I said, sure, they are $10 each - how many do you want? He said 10 and gave me $100. I said OK. BTW - I have a pet rabbit, so I went home and got 10 - and gave them to him = he gulped them down - gagging a little. Hm, tasted like rabbit shit - I said, see, smarter already...

That said, when I was in College we had test tables about 8 feet apart set up in the numerous gyms, they started the exams at the set time. They had about a dozen invigilators walking about looking for crib sheets, whispers etc = I think these will make a comeback. We also need to make Faraday shields on the walls/windows/roofs/doors. They have a clear RF shield for windows with a very thin tin layer allowing about 85% light and zero RF. These can be set up as panels, laid down and taken up. This would block iphones/Android from accessing remote resources. These bright AI enabled fools would be 'cut off at the knees' when their AI ubermenchen failed the task = smarter already....

aurizon··on Intel: Winning and Losing
They wasted the $$ that could have saved Intel by buying market shares back to the treasury to appease hedge fund managers and accountants to increase the share price/yield - a true 'bonfire of the Vanities', not to mention the 'Shitanium' = born dead all tries at resuscitation failed. That one also almost killed HP - it limps along - a broken thing
aurizon··on Intel: Winning and Losing
Yes, the flowering of Moore's Law - especially with SSD and memory density - that is still unfolding to the point that an iPhone/android has power of a high end work station from the year ~~2000, same with CMOS optical sensor density and patterned lenses
aurizon··on Intel: Winning and Losing
Intel is a failed monopolist, unlike Apple! So is IBM with MCA, micro-channel-architecture
aurizon··on Social drinking also a well-worn path to alcohol use disorder
A large part might be due to genetics. I recall when westerners exploited native Americans with distilled liquor. Westerners had many generations of alcohol use, the natives = zero. Europeans have become resistant to alcohol. It might be faster metabolism/excretion? - a physiological adaptation? or is it social experience to walk/talk in a straight line? In small Northern Ontario mining towns the native population is like my mother - drink/fall over. We would hire(in my claim staking days up North) local labor for supervised line cutting/sampling, but we paid the local band through their rep - who then paid the workers late on Friday, we started work again on Monday. On helicopter-in jobs, we paid at job's end and usually worked the long Northern days about 18-20 daylight hours(long days up in NO in May-August) with foods/cigarettes flown in every ~2 weeks (and some local deer shooting as a supplement - we had cooks who ran the camp)/ When the job was done = large payday = all went home. By the end of August there were some freezing nights. Some crews had heated double walled tents and stayed longer, but by the end of September the cold weather most of this was curtailed.

I was born in the UK, my Dad never drank a drop - my Irish mother would drink until she fell over. Dad had lock up the liquor - or else = all gone = fall over. My brother and I do not drink a drop?? I am not drawn to liquor, and tobacco smoking or cannabis = I never touch at all.

aurizon··on Progress toward fusion energy gain as measured against the Lawson criteria
There are a number of flow batteries, where they have large vats where charge is stored in 2 discrete charge state fluids in a redox reaction. They charge a vat through a cell and discharge it in the other direction. Limits are solubility of the charge states in the transport fluid = huge vats for total watt-hours and huge redox cells for rate of charge/discharge. Runs well and vats are cheap. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_battery
aurizon··on Progress toward fusion energy gain as measured against the Lawson criteria
Yes, after the test ban treaties, there was a huge push into exploring mathematical emulations of all aspects of fusion, and all assorted bombs, as well as laser ignition of pellets with these large lasers using inertial confinement of the pellet as the laser impacted it - analysing the fusion by observation of emitted neutrons. xrays etc. They issued reports from time to time(sanitised), and probably used the secret data to fine tune emulated weapons with fact points. The pellets were composed of potential fuels, various Hydrogens and Lithiums, varied in composition to explore the ignition space. A number of pellets performed well in terms of gain, but were far-far from useable fusion when the LL labs costs were factored in. I think they determined it could not ever work as a fusion energy source, but it provided data. They still mine data from it with various elemental mixes making up the pellets.
aurizon··on Within 15 years, plummeting satellites could alter winds, temps in stratosphere
Small now, but a valid concern. They need to observe and measure and record the heat flash of a deorbit. Nasa says about 50 tones/day https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/meteors-meteorites/
aurizon··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
Yes, current AI video/text product is inferior at this time. Youtube is full of all genres of inferior products - at this time! The ramp of improvement is quite steeply pointing upwards. This is retrospective of the days of spinning jennies and knitting/weaving machines that soon made manual products un-economic - that said, excellent craft/art product endured on a smaller scale. AI is also taking a toll on the movie arts, staring at the low end and climbing the same incremental improvement rungs. All the special effects(SFX) are in a similar boat. Prop rentals are hit hard. 100 high res photos of an old Studio Tv camera - all angles/sizes/lighting can be added to an AI prop library and with a green screen insert the prop can manifest as a true object in any aspect. There can be many. It still takes people to cull the hallucinations - a declining problem. Same with actors. They can be patterned after a famous actor - with likeness fees, or created de-novo. All the classic aspects of a studio production suffer the same incremental marginalisation - in 5 years = what will remain? - what new tech will emerge? I feel that many forks will emerge, all fighting for a place in the sun = some will be weeded out, some will flower - but at a very high pace. The old producers/directors/writers - the whole panoply of what makes a major studio will be scattered like dried bread crumbs,
aurizon··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
Look at the Auto work force in 1960 and in 2025. Wages became so high that it drove automation/robots and created the Japanese/Korean/European auto industries. Had huge tariffs been enacted we would still have some of those jobs in the USA, but those lost to robotics would still be lost due to the basic economics of fabrication. Can this all be rolled back - All the King's men and all the King's horses can not put Humpty Dumpty together again. I can see a possible future where people are all paid the same $$ and you can not 'shop for slaves' as we do in Asia. This level field would take a while to achieve - even now wages in China have risen a lot and they are not the cheapest labor country now, but their assembled physical plant still dominates. China now has excess physical plant and must replace the USA as a large buyer. Other countries feel the same pressures and erect tariffs of their own. I see many years of this levelling to occur. USA will have to reduce these high tariffs because the USA needs many things and it will take 10+ years to create the physical plant that was allowed to rust away over the last 20-30 years - even now a little has returned, but the 'rust belt' has been melted down and it will return slowly.

I am wary as I see no thrust mechanism, in addition the thrust needed to maintain static flight would create much more tree branch/litter scatter? = AI?

aurizon··on AI Horseless Carriages
How many horses = canned dog food after the automobile? How many programmers = canned dog food after the AI?
aurizon··on AI Horseless Carriages
State and Federal employee organisations might interpret the use of an AI as de-facto 'slavery'- such slave might have no agency, but acts as proxy for the human guiding intellect. These organisations will see workforces go from 1000 humans to 50 humans and x hours of AI 'employment' They will see a loss of 950 human hours of wages/taxes/unemployment insurance/workman's comp.... = their budget depleted. Thus they will seek a compensatory fee structure. This parallels the rise of steam/electricity, spinning jennies, multi spindle drills etc. We know the rise of steam/electricity fueled the industrial revolution. Will the 'AI revolution' create a similar revolution where the uses of AI create a huge increase in industrial output? Farm output? I think it will, so we all need to adapt. A huge change will occur in the creative arts - movies/novels etc. I expect an author will write a book with AI creation - he will then read/polish/optimize = claim as his/her own. Will we see the estate of Sean Connery renting the avatar of James Bond persona to create new James Bond movies? Will they be accepted? will they sell. I am already seeing hundreds of Sherlock Holmes books on youtube as audio books. Some are not bad, obviously formulaic. I expect there are movies there as well. There is a lot of AI science fiction - formulaic = humans win over galactic odds, alien women with TOF etc. These are now - what in 5-10 years. A friend of mine owns a prop rental business, what with Covid and 4 long strikes in the creatives business = he down sized 75% and might close his walk in and go to online storage business with appointments for pickup. He expects the whole thing to go to a green screen + photo insert business with video AI creating the moving aspects of the props he rented(once - unless with an image copyright??) to mix with the actavars - who the AI moves and the audio AI fills in background and dialog. in essence, his business will fade to black in 5-10 years?
aurizon··on Beyond Abundance: Eerie Parallels between "Universe 25" & Chronic Disease
We see a parallel in Russia where a dominant KGB derived cadre monopolises resources$$ and the 'wretches'go to war and the birth rate declines.. Russia had limitless resources, based on oil/gas/minerals and yet the KGB cadre has reduced them to desperation. War products are destroyed, some help, some poke sticks at the wretches.. Another parallel might be Animal Farm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Farm
aurizon··on AI-Designed Antivenoms: New Proteins to Block Deadly Snake Toxins
One hopes a storable and long lasting product will be able to save many of those 100,000 deaths(??), but you are correct - it might not offer enough $$ to USA pharma?
aurizon··on AI-Designed Antivenoms: New Proteins to Block Deadly Snake Toxins
Now, how to prevent the attempts of big pharma to patent these to make tens of thousand of Indians/Africans pay big $$. These AI modelers are reputedly not validly a human creation = patent/copyright. These protein constructs might have a long room temp shelf life = needed in most Indian/African bite victims.

aurizon··on Ask HN: Should I change my job?
See if some benefits are available - CEO might be amenable. Careers are not summer jobs, they are built year by year, often as the company grows and new niches appear that need paid training. Often paid training has a duty to stay 1-2 years and can be pro-rated because some training = $$$ and they want a degree of permanence. Some people do not know how happy they are - until they are not! Insert shot of Bugs Bunny hammering the point of a 500 pound bomb = CRINGE = Marks bomb DUD - or not...
aurizon··on How the United States became a science superpower

aurizon··on Why Is Africa Poor? Economic unfreedom, not slavery or colonialism
She is correct. Colonial economics designed to enrich the conquering country = laws to disable the local people and a thick veneer of legalry that obstructed newcos for the people. India is also hampered by this = endemic corruption and bribery. India is better, but has far to go - Africa further but the internet will help. Africa is full of laws that make the internet very expensive. Startink does and end run on many of these = local rulers hate Starlink(for the most part) and steal installations - which are soon set up on ruler's buddies place - once Starlink knows = cut off
aurizon··on Perfume brands fighting a 'lost cause' against cheap dupes, say lawyers
Youtube influencers have destroyed 'face brands' people have come to see them as vapid fakes, and all the movie/TV actors are lumped in with them. Then there are the added AI similars that add to the decline = we armor ourselves to ignore them - like all ads.It is similar to the way British so called 'high class or related to Lords/Ladies' and they dressed to set themselves apart. You still see remnants in the UK - but it is fading with time. All these Chinese fake brands make me laugh - the Chinese are deep into it, as we see with regular US Customs bag/clothing/perfume/etc seizures.
aurizon··on U.S. officials discuss daylight saving time: Is it going away for good?
The Southern states see a lot less daylight change = they support. Northern regions, Canada/Europe find more utility. As a schoolboy London, UK, I went to school and came home in the dark on the shortest days - longest days dawn/dusk = I was asleep. As a kid, I paid no attention to DST etc - I was unaware.
aurizon··on Big tech's new datacentres will take water from the driest areas
Yes, radiators for one, this insistence of evaporating water in dry areas = a fools game. Sure it costs more and needs sanitation/treatment of the trapped water but it is done in many places. Bad water management in evaporative towers has killed many, legionnaires disease, amoeba, flies/frogs/etc as well as the need for more and more water that needs replacement/ion exchange. Often the cheapest answer is not the best.
aurizon··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
