aurailious··on The Chinese Government Likely Borrowed More than the US in 2017
The majority of US debt is held domestically, same with China.
aurailious··on North American vs. Japanese zoning
> If this seems odd, it's only because modern Americans have largely stopped thinking of the United States as, well, a set of united states. But that's exactly what they are.

Yes, this is exactly my point. The EC comes from an earlier time when the US are instead of the US is. But that has clearly changed. Its a vestige of a different form of governance. The power of government derives from the people, not the past. How people currently view the US is how the government should operate.

So using the EC as some excuse for resistance against mob rule is not only against its original intended purpose but also against what people actually want currently. People want the US to be viewed as the identity of the country, not the individual separate countries. People want to elect the President, they don't want the States to.

aurailious··on North American vs. Japanese zoning
Its a remnant from a time when the US was a collection of states instead of a single country. The proverbial change of "the US are" to "the US is". The President is elected by the States just as Senators used to be. It was not about individual representation in the federal government, but representation by the States. This is what the EC was for. The States elect the President.

The US started out as a federation more like how Switzerland is. But over time more and more authority was placed into the federal government and more and more cultural identity was placed there as well. So there are vestiges of government that persist from that earlier time.

aurailious··on North American vs. Japanese zoning
The Electoral College is a terrible system for trying to resist mob rule. It was never designed for such a thing and trying to backport that reason onto it is dumb bullshit.

> Look at the backlash over 'gentrification'. No, we like our squalor just the way it is!

This is highly dismissive of all the actual and legitimate problems gentrification has.

aurailious··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
The US generally does not export its most advanced defense technology. Almost all fighter aircraft exports over the past century have have limitations on its equipment. Generally the receiving country replaces some equipment with their own domestic variants. Israel and Japan do this with their US fighter aircraft.

Trusting an ally with any version of the F-35 is a big thing. The base F-35 is still going to be a very great fighter aircraft.

> Healthcare organizations (insurance and delivery) see data as a competitive advantage.

Its not just seeing it as such, it is. Data is everything these days.

aurailious··on Boulder moves to fund citywide fiber buildout through debt
Most cities try to hide trailer parks as much as possible. 99% Invisible recently did an episode on mobile homes that was pretty interesting.
aurailious··on AT&T Cleared by Judge to Buy Time Warner
Well, the judge has to base the decision on a whole bunch of laws. It's not like judges get to decide this on their own.
aurailious··on Ask HN: How will it go for Raspberry Pi in the coming years?
But just because its primary purpose is education doesn't mean it will/would/should always be that. Its sort of like curb cuts, something that starts out trying to fix one problem but then its quickly seen how many other problems it helps fix or other capabilities to enable.

aurailious··on Bernanke Says U.S. Economy Faces a ‘Wile E. Coyote’ Moment in 2020
You must have had your 401k with a terrible bank then.
aurailious··on AI at Google: our principles
We absolutely know the Nazis would have at least use atom bombs on the Eastern front. Whether they would use them on the UK could be up for debate, but arguably they would have used them there as well.

Regardless, the atom bombs were certainly not the worst things any country did in WWII. The US firebombing was far worse. Everyone did bad things in that war.

Stop using your modern sensibilities to judge them.

aurailious··on AI at Google: our principles
> there was almost nothing left worth hitting in strategic terms.

The bombing campaign leading up to the atom bombs specifically left about 5-6 cities relatively untouched. There were still major strategic targets left in August. They did this to test their effectiveness on cities, as a demonstration to the soviets, and to destroy morale.

Demonstrating their effectiveness to the soviets is why they didn't drop them in Tokyo bay.

aurailious··on Mosaicism: The genome varies from cell to cell
With the amount of abstraction going on in software its going to be much more like soup in the future.
aurailious··on Mosaicism: The genome varies from cell to cell
Isn't it "known" that even something like temperature is also linked to increased crime?
aurailious··on The Stuxnet worm may be the most sophisticated software ever written
Whataboutism
aurailious··on Did Google Fake Its Big A.I. Demo?
So that would mean that the person asking the bot to give consent or would that mean Google is the one giving consent? Or is the person giving permission to Google to give consent? Would Google give permission to the recording of the call?
aurailious··on US Births Dip to 30-yr Low; Fertility Rate Sinks Further Below Replacement Level
I am not sure how you are implying those two things can be seperate. All immigrants have a source. Throughout US history there has been waves of immigration. Where that source is has changed along with the resentment of that source. It is not from any particular source that resentment occurs, but that there is immigration from a source at all.
aurailious··on US Births Dip to 30-yr Low; Fertility Rate Sinks Further Below Replacement Level
For the time being, immigration is still causing the millennial generation to increase and is the reason why US population continues to grow. So for at least the US the result is that we may not face the same problems as other developed countries or the problem of an aging population may be reduced.

It will cause the US to continue to be a nation of immigrants and the resentment that may cause.

aurailious··on Is a Dumber Phone a Better Phone?
I think other languages call "phones" different things. In German I think it's a "handy". While like most German words its a bit awkward, it does seem closer to the truth.

aurailious··on Salesforce CEO Benioff calls for national privacy law
Higher cost to do business by requiring compliance with regulations.
aurailious··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers (2015)
I think the point isn't that we can build from source, but why. If its a huge codebase you can't independently audit that source code. So ultimately if you compile it or the organization making it doesn't matter for purposes of trusting that code not to be malicious.
aurailious··on Introducing Surface Hub 2
Nadella seems to have changed from Balmer's "software on Windows" to the current "software with Windows". I know that their have been making better Android and iOS compatibility.

However, I would guess that they would still be aggressive against other desktop OSs.

aurailious··on Google Grapples with ‘Horrifying’ Reaction to Uncanny AI Tech
Duplex will definitely be used in the opposite direction than demonstrated. Its acceptable to talk to a robot over the phone, and improving that process is very valuable.

But having a robot speak to the business? That might be a bit much. Then again, if this version is only for appointments, reservations, etc, than that might be seen as acceptable in kind of the same way.

It's mostly the hesitation about when this starts going beyond that. Do you now use Google assistant to talk to friends/coworkers? "Ok, Google, ask $friend if he wants to see a movie this weekend."

aurailious··on Young Chinese are sick of working long hours
"Millennials are now killing the Chinese manufacturing industry!"
aurailious··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
I have been using this on my pixelbook and, unless I am wildly mistaken, it's generating an LXC container. Android apps for instance all run inside a single container for them as well

The container itself is running Debian Stretch. However, for someone not using this it can be easily misinterpreted to mean a VM. Functionally it's not much different.

aurailious··on Google Duplex: An AI System for Accomplishing Real World Tasks Over the Phone
I prefer not to call them servants, it would be better to start calling them partners actually, just in case we call them master some day.
