atyppo··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
My iPhone's battery health has been stuck at 83% for nearly 15 months. It was only 9 months old (purchased brand new) when it reached 83%. Apple will not replace with Applecare unless it is below 80%. Something doesn't add up there.
atyppo··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
Are there new 2023 requirements? In the past, the only thing that DOE requirements applied to was the "Normal" cycle. All others can use as much water as they want since DOE regs don't apply.
atyppo··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
Apple tried with Apple News+ and hasn't exactly succeeded. If they can't succeed, I fail to see how anyone else could. Maybe a few media incumbents?
atyppo··on Aeroflot deactivates brakes on nine aircraft, relies solely on reverse thrust
There’s a huge industry of leasing jet engines to avoid downtime since most shop time is spent waiting for engine repair. The lessors hot swap engines and avoid downtime for an entire jet just so an engine can get serviced. This is a perfectly normal practice in the aviation industry.
atyppo··on FCC imposes record penalty against transnational illegal robocalling operation
Your second point is very interesting to me as someone born in 2000 who's only really known a world where this is true. It seems so distant and novel from where we are today.
atyppo··on Nvidia’s CEO Is the Uncle of AMD’s CEO
I agree that it appears externally that immigrants to the US tend to succeed more than those to Europe, but what's the cause? Higher wages and a stronger economy certainly play a role, but I suspect there's more at play here. A more selective visa program? It's one I would argue is overly selective especially when considering that one can be born here to illegal immigrants and be a US citizen.
atyppo··on Ask HN: IP cameras that don't require an app or internet?
Geovision has had a ton of security incidents. Perhaps they're easy to set up, but they definitely aren't secure.
atyppo··on Goodbye, San Francisco
Germany's new citizenship law looks extremely compelling. Moreover, they have a relatively easy visa system to navigate with straightforward immigration rules. There's a very useful subreddit with a very dedicated moderator. [1]

atyppo··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
I have no problem with this personally. But I fear that nuclear fearmongers would capitalize on this as a possible "worst-case scenario" if we tried to deploy such a plan. Is this thought misguided?
atyppo··on Farming technologies tackle climate-change threats
Is all that much support needed? Maybe for crops grown on trees or something, but in videos I’ve seen about indoor farming [1], there hasn’t been much other than basic metal cages with containers spaced out.

atyppo··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
Yeah, I’m not referring to useful ones being actively used for towing. I’m referring to people that leave them in while driving around not towing anything. Some are designed to extend upward as well with no practical towing purpose. Look up pictures of collisions after someone has a tow hitch in and you’ll see what I mean.

How could you possibly imagine the average city resident uses more energy when dwellings are smaller, newer on average (more energy efficient), and residents are less likely to own a car?
atyppo··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
As someone who feels the same way, I’ve lost all hope for the US in this regard. SUV/truck sales have continued increasing with absolutely zero mainstream discussion about preventing pedestrian deaths. It’s legal to have push bars and tow hitches (thus inhibiting crumple zones) with no purpose other than “protecting” your vehicle at the expense of lives.

Even ostensibly pedestrian friendly cities don’t have sufficient political willpower to hand street space over to other modes of transit at anything resembling a fast enough rate. Everything needs to sit in a “pilot” for two years before action is taken.

atyppo··on NYC Subwaysheds
We should be asking “why not both?” but unfortunately NY construction costs are inflated so ridiculously we can’t even afford one let alone get politicians with a strong enough backbone to support these common sense projects that would alleviate strain on NYC housing stock.

Apple didn’t exactly do a speedy rollout of bike directions in their Maps app. I find it hard to blame Google here. Seems more like a symptom of our society to me.
atyppo··on Addressing the community about changes to our API
This post screams classic Friday afternoon news dump to me. But at this point, it doesn't really matter. I'm beginning to grow very tired of Reddit. When I signed up almost 9 years ago, it felt like a community where I was surrounded by others who were genuinely curious, helpful, and smarter than me. Now it feels like a slightly better Facebook, even if you exclude the constantly interjected political comments. The HN community feels to me today what Reddit felt like 9 years ago.
atyppo··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
Interesting. I don’t think it’s a big enough annoyance for me to install yet another extension. Moreover, since I use old Reddit on my phone, I’d still have to change it back.
atyppo··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
Yes. It’s in the preferences section only when you’re logged in. I notice it as I use multiple accounts somewhat sporadically and it seems like when I log into one after a while it’s almost always back on new Reddit. I’m not alone in complaining about this - plenty of threads on Reddit mentioning this.
atyppo··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
HN is popular within certain demographics and tends to have somewhat circular discussions as a result. As someone who works in finance in NYC, I know nobody else who reads it. I imagine if I worked in tech in Redwood City, I might think differently.
atyppo··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
Reddit conveniently unchecks the “redirect me to old Reddit” button every ~6 months. Quite annoying. I’ve been using Reddit for ~8-9 years and it’s gotten palpably worse. I knew it was dying the first time I saw an emoji on there. Seems they want to go the way Digg did.
atyppo··on Steal This Idea: The Larger the Car, the More You Pay to Park
The vast majority of people in the US and Canada are not buying minivans. They're buying comically large cars that endanger road users, and often even themselves because SUVs and trucks are not subject to the same road safety standards as sedans and minivans (in the US, at least. Not sure about Canada on this second point).
atyppo··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Can't speak to this channel specifically, but SponsorBlock works incredibly well, even for medium to smaller-sized channels.
atyppo··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
Yep, I mentioned them in my comment. Though they are effective, they take a huge chunk of change.

You say airlines are a big part of your business model. Do you only work with US airlines or do you support letters for EU261 rules as well? I'm a very frequent flyer and never had many issues with getting compensation from domestic airlines but European airlines are an entirely different story. I've found the best experience has been paid services that take a huge cut like Airhelp, so it would be nice to not pay 35% every time I have an issue.
atyppo··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
Yep, hence my usage of NY when referring to the MTA. With regard to the bike network in NYC, many of these are vanity projects. Many of the “protected” crosstown bike lanes in Midtown for example, have about 4 feet of room. If someone in a car decides to fling their door open, you don’t have many options to avoid it. Many of the other bike lanes are not usable in substantial parts, such as Schermerhorn St in Brooklyn due to rampant illegal parking. All this is to say that NYC DOT is after a number measured by the number of miles of bike lane, not by cyclist safety. The only “Amsterdam style” bike lane we really, truly have in Manhattan is along the rivers which is way beyond overcrowded on weekends.
atyppo··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
NY prioritizes this stuff in a way that’s great for optics but is wasteful, ineffective, and at a snail’s pace in practice. Construction costs for subways, for example, are about $3.5B/mile [1] as of the most recent line built. Corruption is rampant in unions, contracts, and consultants. The unions are nice enough to demand positions like break room supervisor or elevator operator (to press buttons in an elevator), to other workers that no auditor or construction professional could figure out why they were at the work site, as mentioned in the below article. Not to mention a MWBE program that dictates how government funds are spent based on race and gender, which inflates construction costs further.

Bike lanes and other non-car infrastructure? Good luck using them. Between police and other supposed city workers parking wherever they want with (often fake) placards to mopeds and ebikes going 20+ mph in the wrong direction, biking and walking in NYC is simply not the enjoyable experience it ought to be. Traffic enforcement might as well not exist - anyone can drive around with a paper plate from Texas or drive however they’d like because NYPD refuses to enforce traffic laws.

atyppo··on Has China just finalised the world’s first hyperloop destinations?
The fact that the US, as the largest economy in the world, can't construct a single true HSR line is embarrassing. China has some advantages such as a much more fragile idea of private property rights and cheaper labor pool, but this does not come close to accounting for the differences. Geographically, the US is very similar to China, with a highly populated East Coast and lesser populated West Coast. Yet, this has not stopped China from building a comprehensive high speed rail network.
atyppo··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
I think you greatly overestimate the importance the average American assigns to "superior functionality" on an iPhone. As important as it is to you or me, the average person doesn't know or care why they should have these features.
atyppo··on Housing should be affordable except for when I sell my house for $1M
Yes. This is true. 65% of young Americans, however, do not. Hence my statement “for young people.”
atyppo··on Housing should be affordable except for when I sell my house for $1M
I can’t think of anywhere off the top of my head that housing could be considered in surplus in the US. Can you? The fact is housing now consumes a much higher percentage of income than it did for earlier generations. Either wages need to catch up or housing prices need to drop.
