atomicdog··on Programmers' Day
What are you supposed to do on "Martin Luther King" day?
atomicdog··on Programmers' Day
Can you imagine "programmer's day" being officially recognized in a western society such as the US or the UK? Over here, intellectual pursuits such as programming are effectively spat upon.
atomicdog··on Are jobs obsolete?
>Yes, things are way screwed up, but capitalism remains

I'd say "lingers" is a better choice of words, here.

atomicdog··on Seriously, stop with the booth babes
But she knows all about the C Sharps!
atomicdog··on Seriously, stop with the booth babes
Wait, they have booth babes at Linux conventions? Those poor girls...
atomicdog··on "I've got an idea for an app"
>Like Command and Conquer but set in space

Yeah, that kind of game could never become popular, right? ;)

atomicdog··on Moot's Canvas now public.
>I think moot is trolling the 4Chan community. They hate sites like this

Bare in mind Moot created 4chan before its, should we say, "unique" community developed. It was originally an weeaboo style anime site, of sorts.

Moot doesn't necessarily like or hate the same things as the /b/tards do.

atomicdog··on Shake to Undo (for Mac OS X)
Bringing features from a cut down mobile OS released in 2008 to a full blown desktop OS with 20+ years of UX development behind it was the best idea we've ever had!
atomicdog··on Shake to Undo (for Mac OS X)
Didn't the old iMacs have a "shake to shutdown" feature? Or was that just some weird configuration I had at the place I worked?

I can't recall the number of times I adjusted the position of the monitor only to find the computer shutting down...

atomicdog··on Why won't anyone buy my apps?
>I've tried getting apps reviewed by review websites

Which review websites? And did you write to them asking nicely to be featured or did you give them a "back-hander?"

atomicdog··on Paladin, a new JS 3D game engine by Mozilla
Can someone get this up and running somewhere? Also, what's with using "make" on Javascript projects?
atomicdog··on Why The UK Startup Scene Is Doomed
Barclays? Not using Indian call centres? Has the whole world gone absolutely mad?
atomicdog··on Does Google see UK developers as unimportant?
Do Google even have any offices in the UK? It seems some tech companies have just forsaken the UK altogether.
atomicdog··on [dead]
Mirror?
atomicdog··on How Steve Jobs handles trolls (WWDC 1997)
Really? The PC vs Mac war has been waging since at least the early 90s.
atomicdog··on How Steve Jobs handles trolls (WWDC 1997)
What does he say at the start?

>Mr. Jobs, you're a bridesmaid(?)....

>Here it comes...

atomicdog··on iPhone vs Android app sales: numbers from an indie developer
Yes, brand awareness and commercial goodwill are important.
atomicdog··on Why no Steam, Notch?
>GPL is draconian and limits freedom.

How? Isn't the basis of GPL simply "Use this code however you want providing you make the source code you derive from it freely availble, too"?

atomicdog··on Why no Steam, Notch?
The difference is id's sources aren't shitty Java applets that noone wants to look through ;)

I kid, I kid...

atomicdog··on Microsoft UI has officially entered the realm of self-parody
All I see in this new UI is a bunch of interface designers trying to justify their jobs...

>What? Most users are familiar with CTRL+C, CTRL+V these days? LALALA NOT LISTENING!! ADD MORE RIBBONS!!

atomicdog··on If Software Is Eating The World, Why Don't Coders Get Any Respect?
Zuckerberg didn't earn his respect through coding, neither did Bill, really, they were mostly opportunists. Besides, they're outliers in the grand perspective of things; your average programmer in the street is significantly less paid and respected than your average hedge-fund manager.
atomicdog··on If Software Is Eating The World, Why Don't Coders Get Any Respect?
>We're people who build things.

True. But if I'm building something for someone else I'd damned well better be getting paid for it.

atomicdog··on If Software Is Eating The World, Why Don't Coders Get Any Respect?
So what we really need is a proper professional society, or even unions.
atomicdog··on Your problem with Vim is that you don't grok vi
>You can also use it whether you are on Mac, Windows, Linux or whatever future OS comes out.

I can use modern WYSIWYG text editor on any unfamiliar platform anyway, my aptitude with computer GUIs is sufficient enough for that. Notepad++, Textwrangler, MS Word, whatever... they're not exactly difficult to pick up.

atomicdog··on Your problem with Vim is that you don't grok vi
Except disregarding over three decades of human-computer-interaction progress is not the "proper" way of editing text.
atomicdog··on Notch is coding live again
GIMP?
atomicdog··on Do all first links on Wikipedia lead to philosophy?
If you make exceptions indiscriminately it will lead you to anything.
atomicdog··on Do all first links on Wikipedia lead to philosophy?
The default first entry, "Human", doesn't even reach "philosophy" before the maximum of 50 steps is reached. Kinda blows a hole in the theory...
atomicdog··on Do all first links on Wikipedia lead to philosophy?
On Conversvapedia everything eventually leads to "Ronald Reagan".
atomicdog··on Do all first links on Wikipedia lead to philosophy?
Nope. You can get stuck in loops pretty easily.
