b) By switching professions to a more "respected/cool" one do you not think you're just contributing to the problem of programmers not being taken seriously?
For example you'll often see a lecturer drawing lots of 1s and 0s on a whiteboard to illustrate it but you're less likely to see a simple example Java program which uses shifting to get RGB values deconstructed.
What these guys are doing is generally making a 20minute game such as pong and including a gallery of, say, Minecraft screenshots in the app. They then market the app in such a way that's designed to trick users into thinking they're purchasing Minecraft, when they're actually just purchasing a gallery of Minecraft screenshots.

Comparing Angry Birds (a physics-based game) to Minecraft (a game with... gravity) is a bit of a stretch.
In terms of actual code they're not even in the same league so I won't bother comparing anything Carmack's achieved with Notch's magic number and circular reference-ridden Java code.
CERN has poor working conditions?
They came up with the "don't be evil" thing when they were young idealistic hipsters who just wanted to be different from the suit-wearing status quo. They had no idea of how big they would eventually become so it had nothing to do with reminding them of the "slipperly slope".
The moment large amounts of money becomes involved the whole "don't be evil" think goes out the window pretty fast.
